News of the Metropolitan Memorial United Methodist Women November, 2012
I: What’s New Nominate Your Favorite Charity—Now Deadline – This Thursday, November 15! We need your input to identify and support outstanding organizations whose missions are consistent with our vision and UMW tradition. For 2013, the Executive Committee will continue to focus on three priority areas for giving: Education, Health, and Social Justice. Please nominate organizations that work in one of these areas. We have received very few nominations to date. We will select 10 to 12 organizations for funding. (Our UMW currently supports the following: Bread for the City, Bright Beginnings, Courtney’s House, Fairfield Orphanage and Sponsorship Association, Health in Harmony, Just Neighbors, High Tea Society, Mabel Jones School, the Ballet School, The Methodist Home and Wesley Scholarship Fund.) The finance committee will conduct the initial selection, which will be reviewed by the executive committee and presented at the annual meeting. More information and a nomination form are attached. Send your nominations to Suzanne Vieth at: msvieth@verizon.net

Then bring your crèche(s) to the Great Hall on Saturday, December 1, between 10 and 2. Members of the Arts Council will be there to receive and arrange the crèches. Church Ladies Bring It $17,000, that’s what we brought. Metropolitan’s 2012 UMW Bazaar turned knick knacks, trinkets and attic treasures into gold for 11 charities that support women and children around the world (see the listing above). Our best assets in this annual effort are, again, Barbara Gaskill and BobbyTurnbull. We owe them many thanks and much gratitude. But the rest of you deserve a pat on the back, too. Thanks to all who sorted, priced, unpacked, policed, sold, packed, etc. In addition to the usual suspects, three of our church's three shelter residents and leaders of our resident Boy Scout troop who all also pitched in for clean-up duty on Saturday and Sunday. The muscle power was greatly appreciated!
Show Us the Money If you haven’t already sent in your 2012 UMW Pledge to Mission, please consider adding it to your list of year-end charitable gifts. Note that this pledge is completely separate from pledges made to church. Brochures were included with the recently mailed UMW directory.
Way to Read Congratulations to our UMW unit which was recognized by the Baltimore-Washington Conference UMW for completing the UMW Reading Program for 2012—no small feat. Just check out some of those titles. They’re in Metropolitan’s library.
