Present your 2014 pledges/offerings on UMW Sunday September 28 A heartfelt thank-you to those who have already made your UMW mission offering through your Circles. If you have not yet had the chance to make your 2014 offering, pledge cards will be going out in the mail in the next couple of weeks. Please prayerfully consider your giving to our UMW unit, which has committed nearly $6,500 as our 2014 “Pledge to Mission” to support over 100 National Mission Institutions in the U.S., including the Susanna Wesley House in Baltimore, MD, and over 61 International Ministry Projects, including the Ons Plek Shelter for children and teen girls living on the streets of Cape Town, South Africa. Your gifts also help our unit expand the concept of missions through funding our Great Day of Service. Our unit is also able to enrich the creativity of our fellowship with our women’s retreat, broaden the community of those who can participate in retreats through scholarships and honor those women who have nurtured and inspired us at our December Recognition. Please consider presenting your pledge and offering at the UMW.Sunday luncheon.

UMW News UMW Recognition Luncheon - Nominations Needed Although our next Recognition Luncheon will not be until December 14, 2014, it is time to think about prospective honorees. At that time, we will honor and recognize 4 outstanding UMW ladies who have made significant contributions to our church, community and nation. We need your help in nominating these candidates. To see the names of people who have already received this award, please see Page 8 of your 2012-2013 UMW Directory. We would prefer to honor women who have not been previously recognized. To nominate someone, please contact Carol Schleicher-- (rschlei@verizon.net) or Sandy Yeager-- (syeager42@yahoo.com).
Stand Out and Be Proud on UMW Sunday with a Red Ribbon September 28
Please see a greeter on UMW Sunday to get your red UMW ribbon and wear it with pride! If you miss them before worship, they will also be available at the luncheon afterwards.

United Methodist Women Sunday is September 28th at Metropolitan!
Services 9am & 11:15am Luncheon 12:30pm, Vestry
Join us for morning worship led by Rev. Kate Murphey Payton, then come on over to our annual luncheon and social justice program in the Metropolitan Vestry at 12:30pm. Circles 2 and 10 will be setting up the luncheon. To offset the costs and offer hospitality to any guests, we ask that our UMW members contribute towards the luncheon. The suggested donation is $10 (or pay what you can). Thank you for ensuring that strengthening missions for women and children remains our top priority!
United Methodist Women stands against the exploitation of those forced to submit to civil injustice as a result of their basic needs or position in society. As many as 30 million people internationally have fallen victim to human trafficking‌ and for every victim of sex trafficking worldwide there are nine forced labor and/or domestic servitude cases. www.unitedmethodistwomen.org
Our social justice program will focus on what we can do to fight human trafficking activities in our communities, our cities and our world. Asbury UMC in Washington has developed a Stop Human Trafficking ministry at their church to address what they see outside their front door every day. The volunteer-run Stop Modern Slavery organization will be holding their 6th annual Stop the Modern Slavery WalkFest, Saturday, October 4, on the National Mall. Find out more about these issues and how to get involved. http://endslaverynow.org/event/stop-modern-slavery-walkfest

Would you look at this (wonderful) mess????? Help needed: Bazaar donations are piling up!
Sorting and pricing needed now for UMW Bazaar Families welcome to help Tuesdays 10-noon or other times upon request Did you know that according to Bill Potts the UMW Bazaar is the most anticipated event in the church judging from the calls to the office? Lots of people who call are not church members. The good news: - There is already a pile-up of donations outside the UMW closet. (Check out the picture taken July 20th.) Thanks to all who have generously donated already. -
The ancient restrooms at the bottom of the stairs next to the UMW closet are going to be renovated soon.
What that means: - We should get the backlog sorted, priced and put into the closet and out of the way as soon as possible to avoid a traffic jam with the construction crew and general chaos. What you can do: - Volunteer one or more mornings for only 2 hours to help sort and price items. Bobby and Barbara can easily show you what to do. -
Bring along friends & family to help. Even young children (with a parent) can help sort items. Teens could earn service hours.
-
If you can’t make Tuesdays 10am-noon, another time could be arranged.

Metropolitan & Community News Metropolitan Hosts Benefit Concert for Reconciling Ministries Network Friday, October 17 Reception at 6 pm, Great Hall Concert at 8 pm, Sanctuary Save the date! At 8:00PM, Friday, October 17, Metropolitan hosts Catching Fire: A Concert for Inclusion and Equality. The event is being planned by members of the Marriage Equality Task Force, in cooperation with members from Foundry and Dumbarton, for the purpose of raising funds for the Reconciling Ministries Network. Funds raised will help with organizing to increase the number of Reconciling Congregations, and to support preparations for General Conference in 2016. The concert is co-sponsored by BWARM (Baltimore Washington Area Reconciling Methodists), and several of the area Reconciling Congregations. Invitations are going out to all of the Reconciling Congregations in the Baltimore-Washington Conference. Artistic Director Eileen Guenther plans a musical program that will help express our hopes and longings for justice and equality. Performers will include Bobby Baker and Millicent Scarlett, who are well known at Metropolitan, as well as members of the Gay Men's Chorus of Washington. Choirs from the sponsoring churches will join a musical finale. The 8:00 PM concert will be preceded by a reception at 6:00 PM at which honored guest Frank Schaefer will sign copies of his new book Defrocked. Books will be available for purchase at the reception. We are very excited to be planning this important event, demonstrating our commitment to LGBTQ inclusion, and hope that Metropolitan members will support the concert with their participation and financial support. Information regarding ticket sales will be available shortly. We also look for volunteers to help host the event. Please see the note from Gail Crane, Volunteer Coordinator, below. Thank you! Ellen Bachman
Volunteers needed We would welcome volunteers to help in any of the following areas for the reception - set-up (starting at about 4:30), serving during the reception, provide some finger foods (savory or sweet) and clean-up. If you can help, please contact Gail Crane at gcpianokeys@gmail.com

Metropolitan & Community News Metropolitan UMC’s Campus Ministry Team Volunteers Welcome Since 2008, Metropolitan UMC’s campus ministry team has sought to deepen the relationship between the congregation and the American University campus. Over the course of 6 years, the campus ministry team has had great success “narrowing Nebraska Avenue” and creating opportunities for community, spiritual growth, and service. Metropolitan’s campus ministry team works in cooperation with the Methodist-Protestant chaplaincy at American University to extend welcome and hospitality to students and to foster intergenerational connection. Our campus ministry team is made up of largely volunteers, and it's very easy to help! Here are a few easy ways you can support this vital ministry: Volunteer at our monthly dinners Volunteers are needed to help prepare and serve monthly dinners following student worship at Kay Spiritual Life Center, on the campus of American University. Even if you can only volunteer for one dinner a year, your help is appreciated!
Adopt-a-Student
Students are often far from home and tired of dining hall food. Have a student over for a home cooked meal and some good conversation, and get to know some of our amazingly insightful and intelligent neighbors across Nebraska Avenue. Be a mentor Volunteer to serve as a mentor for a semester and a year. We’ll match you with a student who is interested in your area of expertise, and you’ll have the joy of equipping a young person for a life of ministry and service Donate Donations are always welcome. A monthly dinner for 40 students only costs about $50, so donations large and small are very helpful!
