A note from our creator Hi!

I‘m Jules. I love making superheros & legends. I love to capture people’s imaginations and turn them into amazing artworks by enhancing an creating images beyond your wildest dreams. These gorgeous, unique, and personal keepsakes will be treasured by you and your family for years to come. Fantasy portraiture brings a great deal of magic and excitement to your traditional portrait and is an art which sparks imagination, creativity and emotions in our clients. Fantasy Portraits are hand crafted by myself with many of the backgrounds made from a series of images carefully crafted together to form one unique image. I believe all portraits should be relaxed, fun-filled, and all about capturing you, your relationships and your story. Your images should hold empathy, emotion, and essence of its subject. Everyone deserves to be their own super hero.

W

elcome to the very first magazine for Julie Clyde Creative. It’s a little surreal and so exciting to be putting together all of my passion for the last month into one place and get excited about what’s in store this Spring! My hope for this magazine is to bring together all of the Fantasy Portraits and work that goes on behind the scenes and share some of my favourite stories in the process. I’ve been a busy bee with so many amazing experiences to share! I hope you love falling into the world of imagination with me!

The Joy of Fantasy Portraits

The joy of Fantasy Portraits is asking, 'If you could be anything in the entire world, what would you be?' And waiting for a child to answer. I always ask parents not to prompt their child’s answers to see what they say. Sometimes they’re what was expected but so often they seem to come from left field. ‘The little adventurer’ (above) was the very first Fantasy Portrait where I realised the beauty in adding people to my dreamscapes as they were called. I had created dream like landscapes since 2010, but never even contemplated using them with people in them until 2019. We had a pretty rough few years within our household leading up to 2019 and by the April of that year, I was really ready to make some major changes. After reconnecting with Caroline Sharkey, a local textile artist and my now mentor, we talked about a way to collaborate together outside of traditional quilt photos. It’s such a blur now but she gave me creative license to ‘have fun’ and to see what would unfold. Using images we had photographed of her quilts, her grandson and my artistic license I set about ‘having fun’. Needless to say her reaction to the finished image, and our subsequent conversations have truly helped to grow and shape Julie Clyde Creative into what it is today.

In the August of the same year, a local mum hired me to photograph her beautiful children for family portraits and with her permission she allowed me creative license to create some special portraits for her little ones. ‘The Girl with her Elephant’ (below) became another milestone for me and the business started to grow quickly from this point. I built all of her backgrounds from scratch, crafting them with meaning and imagery from her cultural background. I will treasure her reaction for my lifetime. I loved crafting backgrounds that I couldn’t find anywhere else and thrived in adding special surprises for each family. Although I wasn’t overly impressed with myself with the above two images, the ones on the following pages really resonated for me that I COULD do this; a feeling I hadn’t felt for the longest time.

For me, these three images brought me so much joy. The little boy LOVES climbing, crafting and adventure. His hot air balloon was crafted together (with permission) using images I had taken at Caroline’s house months earlier. I wanted it to have that ‘magical blanket’ feel and send him off into the evening sky. The temple in the shadows of the piece is a Baha’i temple in Sydney which is a symbol of their culture and faith. The little girl riding the elephant was crafted from 25 images including the Shirazi plains (the family originally came from the Iranian city), trees, grasses, baby elephant, textures and colouring and finished off with green ribbons and bows for the little girls favourite colours. ‘The Artist’ (right) was so fun to create. It was so simple to pose but became more complex in the editing side of the house. A little paintbrush and water was all I needed to get him to play and then again with 6 images combined together and another 6 of layers and textures my little artist came to life. Having this collection of seven images as the benchmark of beginning to create all kinds of super hero’s is so special. I cannot thank the family and Caroline enough for all they’ve done to help me grow and push to create differently. Now you know a little about where I’ve come from, I’d love to show you what the last few months and the coming months will look like.

Young, nsw This adventure began during COVID-19 lock down when my business had to pivot to a 100% online platform. I had an old wedding client reach out and ask if I could create a superhero image for her son. She sent me some images (below shows the before image and after) and I went to work playing with them. I created a little superman image high above the city and sent it back. Now, when I love an image I always hope it translates to the receiver, which it absolutely did! Hooray! Not only that, but upon sharing his special image I had requests to visit Young one weekend to capture the towns superheros and legends. We planned it six months in advance and hoped that we would be able to still go ahead with the weekend. With COVID guidelines and safety precautions in place I traveled the 10 hours south for the coldest weekend on record. Always the way! However we had a busy weekend with some of the most fun, loving, personality filled kiddos to date. Thank you to every single person who came and made the weekend so special. Massive thanks to Brooke and Scott for inviting me, taking great care of me and for heating the garage. To my newest friend Ryder, Thanks for having me and sharing your beloved puppy and monster trucks with me. See you soon! I will be heading back again in December for Santa free Christmas photos so keep an eye out later in the magazine for dates!

Super Hero Day 2020

Covid has created some interesting times this year so Super Hero Day has been more spread out than usual here at the studio. We had a few special boys pose for advertising as their favourite characters and a few book in for the weekend. I do photograph every day of the year, any hero or legend you can think of so you don’t have to wait just for the special events. Who’s your favourite Super Hero?

The Spring Bears

This image was created to welcome in the Southern Hemisphere Spring time and to give a little nod to my hubby. I told him I had found an image of us that we didn’t even have to brush our hair for. This little beauty was picked up and printed in the stunning Beautiful World Magazine by Jessica Drossin this month which is SUCH a huge honor. I’m so grateful to her talents over the years and how she gives back so much to our creative community. When your tribe love your picture, that’s pretty amazing... When your favourite artist loves it too, that’s a whole other level!

ABOVE: Creating some new backgrounds and practicing new skills for the love of creating.

LEFT: I was really proud to have taken part in the Adobe Creative Cloud X Lady Gaga Poster Competition. It was a great way to spend a Friday evening at home, simply loving to create.

Skills Test I’m always on the hunt to learn new skills and test my knowledge of different styles and techniques. Surrealism is one of those styles which I have seen and that looks like a LOT of fun. I wasn’t disappointed! I took a course with Kelly Robitaille through an education platform called ProEdu. They have some of the best of the best offering masterclasses to people who want to learn. I hopped on Kelly’s and not only learned more about warping body shapes and creating cartoon like people, but it gave me additional skin editing tools I can use in my everyday work. Halloween images ARE happening this year, with some surrealism included. To register interest simply email me: jclydecreative@gmail.com

Thank you! A special thank you to all of the local sports teams who took me up on the Fantasy Sports Portraits. We had a few different sports come through the door which made it a really fun little project for all of the local athletes and their families. I’m very honored to be a very small part of your sports seasons for 2020 and wish you all the best for 2021! I’m sure I will see some of you out there on the sporting arenas this summer as well.

Santa Free Christmas Portraits In 2019 I introduced Santa Free Christmas Photography to the families of the mid north coast of NSW. I had spent the previous years battling my three little humans at the shopping centre to go and meet the man in the big red suit without much success. Even working as one of his elves didn’t seem to help any. Having a few friends with children with special needs I devised a way for them to still have their favourite Christmas photos taken without Santa, the crowds and the flash. It was a brilliant lead up to Christmas, and one I thoroughly enjoyed. In 2020 we have had such strange events with COVID19 that I’m not 100% sure if the shopping centres will have Santa this year and I didn’t want all the littles to miss out! I have bookings open already for $60 for the session (here in studio OR virtual!) and a digital file. Printing and wall art is also available should you like any.

Dates: Coffs Harbour
