A Note from the Editor

W

elcome to the USA edition of FANTASY magazine by Julie Clyde. It’s a little surreal and so exciting to be putting together the first edition of this magazine from the USA. It’s exciting to be living back here again and creating from a different side of the globe.

It was hard to stop working to begin with, but it’s given me a lot of space to re-evaluate how I was working and where I want to go with my art. I hope you continue to love falling into the world of imagination with me! This magazine will continue to be a source of creating, empowering and inspiring the next generation of creatives and giving them a platform to share their work from. Submissions are always welcome and I love receiving each and every one of them. Please email jclydecreative@gmail.com with your stories, poems, imagery and artworks and I will endeavour to get them into the magazine for you. Take care and spread kindness wherever you may be. With love,

Jules

Bear Cottage Fundraiser Bear Cottage is the only children’s hospice in NSW a very special place that’s dedicated to caring for children with life-limiting conditions. Families who care for a child with a life-limiting condition often do so around the clock for many years. Bear Cottage’s vision is to be as far removed from a hospital environment as possible. They are set up to provide excellence in paediatric palliative care 24 hours a day, and their affiliation to The Sydney Children’s Hospitals Network means we have access to some of the best medical resources in the world. During July I am once again supporting Superhero week. I am working with kids across the world to create their own version of a superhero for charity. I aim to raise $500 for charity and many kids will have their very own superhero image to call their very own. I call it donate to create. You can support Bear Cottage this year by clicking here:

From Australia to USA Switching it international

The end of 2021 saw my family get less than 3 months notice to get our lives together to relocate to the USA. We have lived here before in 2014-2017 so although it wasn’t new, there was a LOT to be done. Shoving six months of work into three, making albums, prints, boxes, awesomeness brought with it a level of next to zero sleep and lots of days spent at the computer. Proud to admit it was all done by Christmas Eve an then started the packing, sorting and getting the other side of life fixed up in order to move. For our friends who rallied around us with meals, support and texts to check in on us, we are so lucky to have you all in our lives. Thank you. To my mum and dad who dropped everything, repeatedly to help with the kids and keep me sane whilst knowing we were going away for two years, you know we adore you and love you so much. We left Coffs and experienced a side

of Sydney airport I’ve never seen before. It was desolate... Barely a soul to be seen and everything was closed due to covid rules. Qatar was an excellent experience in comparison. Chris had purchased a pass into the lounges so we were met off the plane and escorted through the massive airport and shown the lounges we could hang out in until our next flight. The flights across to DC were bumpy and rough at times but we landed into an icy terrain. Having left summer and arriving to a snowy freezing evening there were a million other places I would rather be.

Fast forward six months, yes six months and we are now happily settled into a house, kids are in school and Chris and I are both working a lot. We have functions multiple times a week but the crew we have met here are fantastic humans so being away from home is actually not hard at all. Julie Clyde Creative is slowly evolving towards it’s own online store filled with prints, originals and wall art. It will eventually grow to bigger things as well. As a business working overseas I can only currently work virtually for clients around the world. So I have been collecting stock imagery, doing online courses and working on my graphic design work. We adore our little community here and we are looking forward to more travel and adventures over the next 18months. It doesn’t feel like we have very long left already as it’s flying along. Can’t wait to update you more as this deployment progresses. With love, Jules

The Divine Series

with miss alexis - Australian fashion model

Being given creative freedom on any project is like gold to a creative. Alexis and I had connected back in 2017 when we first relocated back to Australia from our last over seas trip but it wasn’t until we were about to head back to the USA at the end of 2021 that we finally got together and shot. It’s hilarious to think that she was my last shoot as we were packing the house up in my home studio and now, in another country, I’ve been working to put together these pieces. These three are the beginning of a series about change, growth and feeling stuck along the way. Sometimes you just have to trust your own journey and trust that the divine will take you where you should be. I love the mermaid image with its juxtaposition between ‘drowning’ but still creating at the same time. The darkness inside us all often makes us stop and reflect on where we are in life and what we’ve been through. The last two images are the exploration of feeling stuck and putting down roots and what that means. Are you stuck or finally blossoming? Ultimately you have to trust the process and know the divine has a plan for you.

Miss Alexis Model Meet our cover model

How long have you loved modeling? I have always had a passion for creativity. From a young age I dreamed of modeling art and fashion. What age was your first big shoot? I come from a small town in rural Australia, moving to Newcastle in my early teens. I remember the excitement of winning my first photoshoot with Exclusive photography, Sydney. Age 15. Where has your journey lead you? From there I worked on building my portfolio which lead to many opportunities. I was fortunate enough to model for some amazing brands and magazines. As well as compete in Miss Worldwide and Miss Tourism placing top 6 nationwide. Whats the best part about creating art through your modeling? I have met so many talented, creative, wonderful people through my modeling journey. The amazing experiences I've had will last a lifetime. As will a photographers art.' Jules talks with Kris Kashtanova about their creative journey

ARTIST: KRIS KASHTANOVA NEW YORK, USA

Kris Kashtanova

I’m thrilled to be introducing you all to the incredible artist that is Kris Kashtanova. As she explores her own creative journey she lifts and encourages everyone around her to be the best versions of themselves.

I began taking photographs of London’s wildlife, squirrels, pelicans, different birds, and as the Spring started I got inspired by insects. I got myself a macro lens and spent a lot of time observing and capturing all kinds of arthropods. The reason I moved to London was to study journalism at City University London and it lead me to photographing people. My interests shifted from wildlife to humans and the city itself. I took photographs of people I interviewed for my articles and reportages and this way I met a lot of people and it made me happy.

It’s connection within, with my environment and people and taking time to notice what I like. The best art happens when I can relax and let it happen. I like reading, nature, and documentaries about space, animals, Egypt, how our brains work and inspires me a lot. When I have some time, emotional energy I like volunteering locally and it inspires me a lot. I meet people I wouldn’t meet otherwise. I’m inspired by nature. I live in Manhattan, New York and I love being in nature, which doesn’t happen too often, so I started creating these worlds during the pandemic as a form of de-stressing from the big city and being in nature (even if only in my imagination). I realised that I can create places I’ll never get a chance to visit, like space, imaginary planets, etc. These things always fascinated me as a child. I find that with 3D sky is the limit in creativity and everything I’ve done before only contributes to it. At the moment I’m using 3D tools in my process along with 2D tools like Photoshop. I like using cinema 4D (which is a paid software) and occasionally Blender which is free and I highly recommend trying it.) I like incorporating 3D worlds with photographs. Sometimes I use a portable 3D scanner to make the whole image 3D. I meditate a lot and spend a lot of time away from social media letting my mind wonder and just be. I read a lot of books on how our focus and attention works and I found that for me, I need to be connected with myself, well rested and have enough space in my life for creativity. I’m lucky to have a safe environment around me and I take a lot of time for my mental health. All of this contributes to the level of inspiration I have. Sleep is very important too. I identify as non-binary and I’m pansexual. Pride month is always a special time for me because where I’m from Pride is illegal.

I know how lucky I am to live in a country where I can be myself openly and I don’t take it for granted. It took a lot of effort to be free. Back in Russia there are anti-gay and anti-trans laws and people can’t be as open as I am here in the USA. I have two LGBTQ+ rainbow tattoos on my arms that I designed and I know that where I was born people can be arrested for something like that. It breaks my heart that people in Russia and other countries are still struggling and can’t be themselves and love who they love. I do the best I can to volunteer for these causes and I hope that things will change and everyone can live a free life. At he moment I’m working on a 365 project, creating art everyday or “Everyday render” as 3d artists call it. I don’t limit myself with 3D or 2D or photography. I use whatever is the best way to express my idea. Nature Water

The Art Store

a dream in the making

The store has been a dream in the making for me. I have always wanted a space to sell prints and original pieces from and having the time away from work whilst we moved has opened up that space for me. The store will have a range of pieces available in it across all price points. At this stage its just art prints and in time there will be more original pieces. “The Universe” (below) was co-created with my son, Huon and it is one of his pride and joys that has been displayed in art galleries and also in our home. I have ensured that this piece and ALL of its sales go directly into his bank account. Giving him a platform to share his work from is how FANTASY Magazine came about. I realised there wasn’t a platform for kids to share from like the 1990’s where we could send our stories and images into the newspaper. In time there will be pieces in the store that will be available to purchase that a % of each will be donated to some of my favourite charities it will carry on the Bear Cottage theme of Create to Donate.

The twins treasured tale

Written by Charlotte Anderson & Taylor Emonson- Clyde

Chapter one The flash back

“Mom! Quinn is in my room again!” Alana yelled as she gave Quinn a shove. “No, She was touching my stuff. I was just giving her a taste of her own medicine!” Quinn yelled back. “Stop bickering. I know you’re both mad, but please, there is no need to wake the baby. Why don’t you two go play outside? Your father is practicing some magic out there, maybe you should join him.” Their mother said in her soothing voice as she swept into the room with her long wings trailing behind her. “Fine.” Both grumbled, as they left the room. While the twins were outside, their mother went to calm the baby who had already been awakened by the noise. “Shh shh shh. It will be alright.” Their mother told Chris, as she rocked him in her arms. She spun him around and carefully looked for a trace of wings or magic. “Hey,Tiny wing buds.” She said quietly. “The poor girl has upside magic. I really didn’t think you would.” She was relieved as she placed Chris back in his crib. Suddenly, a small halo flashed above Chris’s head. “Oh thank goodness!” Mother exclaimed, as she went to go get her husband. “Honey! Chris has our gift!” Mother yelled. The twins immediately came running. “He has the power of an angel too!?” Both shouted, out of breath. Their mother nodded. The twins were excited for Chris, but deep down Alana was disappointed and had hoped there would be another misfit like herself. However, she didn’t let her thoughts ruin her family’s excitement and continued on like she was excited too.

That night was full of fun and games as it had been when mother and father had found out that Quinn had the gift of an angel too. To their parents, it didn’t look like Alana had a gift and so the night the family found out about Quinn they just assumed Alana was powerless. Alana knew she had some kind of power, and was eager for her 13th birthday to come when she would grow her wings and truly find out. While the family was eating a messenger came and knocked on the door. The children stayed seated while mother and father talked to the man outside. When they came back into the cottage they had worried expressions on their faces. “What was that all about?” Quinn asked curiously. “Um… Nothing at all. Now let’s get back to the celebrations.” Mother said as she forced a smile. The family continued on but the twins were suspicious. After they were sent to bed, they overheard their mother and father’s conversation. “I’m worried, Eric. What if what the messenger said was true?” Mother asked father. “I don’t know. We should sleep in the twins room tonight just in case. If there really is a man hunting them we need to be prepared.” Father said worriedly as he and mother went to get pillows from their rooms. “Hunting us!?” Alana whispered loudly. Quinn gave her a worried look. “I think so.” He said quietly. “What if they hurt mum and dad?! Or Chris! Or us?” Alana replied. Quinn was quiet for a while. Finally he said “You’re right. They are in danger. We are too. The only thing I can think to do is…” Quinn said hesitantly. “What!?” Alana asked impatiently. “I think we need to run away. Before you freak out, I think you should know it’s the best thing for the family. The man is only coming here for us so if we leave he won’t want to come to the cottage and hurt mum or dad. We just need to find some place to hide out while he is looking for us. And then we can come back home. Simple.” Quinn said as he began to grab his compass. “But we can’t leave!” Alana protested. Quinn just gave her a sad look. Alana knew she needed to if she wanted to keep her family safe. That night the two set out with enough supplies to hopefully last and with hope that they could return to their family in only a few days. Little did they know that their journey would last almost a decade and that running from this man wouldn’t be enough.

Chapter two It had been four years since they had to leave their family, and they were now fifteen. Quinn had shown signs of angel magic but did not grow angel wings. Instead he grew into a dragon. Alana had no magic, but never lost hope in getting hers. ”Any day now Quinn.” She would say, But it never happened. She started to lose hope in getting her wings. Quinn grew more powerful. While treading through bushes and trees, something suddenly scratched Alana. As she rang out in pain Quinn’s wings flared out in alarm. Big golden wings and straight, rough, black horns. Ran over to his sister. Her arm started bleeding rapidly. Using the last of their bandages (that he took before running away, yes they lasted four years). While wrapping the wound Alana pulled away from her twin. “Alana we need to wrap the wound up or it’ll get infected.” He said, chasing after her. Alana started stumbling and tripping as she walked along. “I’m… Fiinee.” She said then turned and ran into a pine tree knocking herself out. After a while dusk fell upon them Alana was still asleep. They had to do it. They had to go back. They were counted missing and everyone will be looking for them, but Alana was getting worse by the minute. Quinn scooped his sister into his hands and used his wings for the first time in months. The air was cold and moist and the moon shone bright. The town’s lights were on and lighting up the air. Then he spotted it. Their old cottage at the edge of the forest, and their mother and father sitting on the porch watching the forest for any signs of life. Then he did it. He swooped down and landed behind the cottage. Hurried footsteps came from the side of their house. “QUINN!” A female voice yelled, It was their mother. “Where is Alana, is she ok?” Quinn shook his head no.

Chapter three “They found them,THEY FOUND THEM!” Everyone in town was yelling. The news was out. The hunter will come again. Alana and Quinn only had a little time. “Alana needs help!” Quinn yelled to his mother as he rushed into the cottage with Alana in his arms. “What happened!?” Mother and father asked. “She scraped her arm and wouldn’t let me bandage it. It’s infected.” Quinn told them.

He placed his twin down on the clear dining room table. “Quinn! Quinn!” Chris yelled in excitement as he tried to give him a hug. “I missed you too buddy. But go upstairs. Now is NOT the time.” Quinn said half heartedly as he tried to tend to his sister. Mother brought Chris to his room. After bandaging Alana’s arm and putting on a coating of Nerosporn, mother made her special healing soup. Slowly, Alana’s eyes opened. “What happened?” She asked sleepily. Quinn cheered and gave his sister a hug. Once Alana was back on her feet she stumbled over once again. “Not now.” His mother exclaimed. Quinn shot her a look. “The hunter will be coming again. We must leave.” Quinn told her as he walked Alana over to the door. “But Alana is not well! Besides, you can’t run from this man your whole life. Do you know how upset your father and I were when we found out you ran away. Please, you can’t leave us again. You can’t live in fear your whole life.” Mother told him as a tear ran down her cheek. Quinn stopped in his tracks. He knew his mother was right and he had secretly missed her too. He knew what he had to do. “Stay with Alana. I’ll defeat this hunter. That way we can live together again. As a family.” Quinn told his mother and father as he placed Alana back on the table. He then swiftly left the room and flew up and out of the cottage. His parents had no time to argue. They only hoped he would be able to defeat this man on his own.

Chapter four When Quinn arrived at this hunter’s house he was surprised to see him sitting on the step awaiting his arrival. “I can feel your strong magic. My oh my. You’ve gotten quite big too. For a while I was worried I would never find you.” The hunter said maliciously. “The names Vendin. I suppose you’re here to ‘defeat me.’ Well let me just tell you now, that’s not going to happen.” Vendin said as he rose from his seat. Suddenly, two large dragon-like wings appeared and where his feet were he now had talons the size of Quinn’s head.

“You’re part dragon too!” Quinn said, stunned. “That’s right. Now why don’t you just give up now. It seems your sister is defective anyways so I can just take you.” Vendin retorted as he hovered over Quinn. Quickly, Quinn jumped back and flew up. He raised his hands and was almost ready to strike when suddenly Vendin caught hold of his leg. “You’re not going anywhere now.” He said as he wrapped his talons around Quinn’s thin body. Quinn let out a faint cry and fell to the ground. Back at the cottage Alana suddenly sat up straight. She had felt the pain from her twin. “Is everything alright?” Her parents asked worriedly. Suddenly, Alana’s wings began to grow. But unlike her family’s angel wings, her wings were bright blue and blue dust circled around her. Her parents sat there, stunned. “Quinn is in trouble.” Alana said quickly and pushed her feet off the ground. She then shape-shifted into a giant blue bird and began to fly across the sky.” “Quinn! Quinn!” She called as she searched the ground. Her vision had seemed to enhance and she could now see everything perfectly. She dove down once she had spotted him. With one powerful strike she knocked Vendin off his feet and freed her brother. “Ha the defective one, finally Alana.” Vendin leapt off the ground from where he lay surprised at her power and snatched her up from where she was standing. “Alana...” Quinn managed to say before he passed out. A muffled voice came faintly through the blackness. It was Alana! Or so he thought. The mirage slowly faded away. He was devastated to see nothing above him either. He tried to Stand but his side stung where he was thrown to ground from, but that got him thinking was that Alana was the bluebird?

Chapter five Quinn hobbled back to the house and collapsed on his bed, looking up and seeing a note strapped to the bottom of the bunk. Quinn. It was written in Alana’s handwriting! He ripped it open and found a neatly folded note with tear marks smudging a little of the ink, but he could still read it. It read,

Quinn my dear twin, When you find this I won’t be there. Don’t come looking for me. He has always been looking for me. Keep Mother and Father safe and give Chris big hugs for me every night. I am with the hunter. I was the bluebird. I have a curse. Dark magic. Good luck Quinn, your Sister, Alana. Now it was his turn to cry. Where was she? He couldn’t let Vendin hurt Alana; he had to help. That meant running away again. ”See you again soon family.” He was off to get his twin back.

A Magical Storm written by lara paschke

Dust flew everywhere. The wind picked up, causing me to retreat to shelter. Oh no... A storm. Being a fox wasn’t easy. Why? I was JUST about to catch a rabbit, when suddenly, a storm came along to ruin my day. I curl my tail around my paws as I miserably look outside. Rain was pelting down in layers, drenching the area. I look up as a bolt of lightning illuminates the sky, and I flinch at an earsplitting clap of thunder. CRACK! A massive log collapsed, blocking my way out of my den. No… I refuse. I would NOT stay trapped in this tiny hole because of a LOG! I let out a growl as I push against the log. My legs gave way as I fell to the ground. Why was this happening to me? All I wanted was a rabbit… I sigh, closing my eyes and falling into a dreamless sleep. A soft humming filled my ears. I twitched my nose and grains of dirt filled my nostrils. I exhale loudly, peeking my eyes open. With yelp, I sat up to meet eyes with a mysterious fox. “I… umm… sorry…” I stammer. “Is… is this your den?” “Oh, no it is not.” The fox had an unusually high voice, and those startling blue eyes were very distracting. “I thought it was yours.” “How?” I whisper, confusion filling my voice. How did you… I thought… I mean… umm… “How did you get in here?” I gesture to the log that was blocking the exit. “Oh, that’s simple.” The strange fox stared at the log hard and for a brief moment, her eyes glowed. WHOOSH! The log was lifted into mid air. Nothing was supporting it. It was just… floating. “Can’t you do that?” The fox turns her head to me. Yeah sure. I can DEFINITELY lift a log using only my MIND. Totally. “Umm... No.” I frown at the fox. “Well, thanks… I think.”

“Oh, no worries.” The fox says gleefully. “By the way, strange little fox, once you leave this hole, you will forget that this conversation even happened.” Pfft. Sure, I will. I walk outside into the fresh morning breeze and freeze. I felt as if someone was rummaging in my head, looking for something. Then- It was like someone had plucked a memory from my head. What…? I couldn’t remember what had happened. Wasn’t I just talking to someone? But who? I turn around and notice a mossy log lying on the ground. Why was that there? And… I thought there was a storm happening… I rack my brain, trying to thing what had happened, but everything was just a blur. A sudden squeaking noise my ears prick. A rabbit. “Oh, it’s on, little squeaky nuisance.”

This is Lara’s second story in Fantasy Magazine, and we always LOVE to receive her work- we hope there are many more to come! If you have a story you’d love to share, please send it to Jclydecreative@gmail.com

GUEST ARTIST

For some of us, creativity is a well that never goes dry.

Sometimes the taste of the water changes, sometimes the flow is stronger, sometimes it’s a trickle – but there is always an element of our very soul that longs to bring forth new ideas, artworks or projects. For as long as I can remember, I’ve loved to create. Drawings, paintings, stories, poems, ideas, projects, concepts. As a teenager my bedroom walls were covered in a collage of beautiful photographs, images and artworks clipped from magazines, and my door was covered in my own drawings. In high school I chose electives like Home Economics, Cake Decorating, T-Shirt Printing, Graphic Design, Media, Ceramics and Art. I went to an evening watercolour painting course with my friend’s Dad. I hankered after painting sets and paintbrushes, colouring pencils and Jo Sonja products. I spent my weekends drawing or writing short stories or poems. When I wasn’t doing that, I was reading and learning and absorbing. Because for me, my creativity is often fueled by a need to learn HOW to create a specific look or effect. My current art journey was a natural evolution from 11 years of face painting and entertaining at children’s parties. I loved being Nessa the Fairy - getting dressed up in sparkly fairy costumes, telling puppet stories and making kids smile and laugh.

I loved opening up my epic collection of face paints and reveling in the multitude of colourful rainbow cakes, shimmers, glitters, and paintbrushes. I loved inhaling the powdery-coconut scent of the face paints, running my fingers through the soft bristles of the brushes, listening to parents and children gasp in delight as a rainbow or butterfly or flowers appeared as if by magic with a few quick swipes of the brush. There was a part of me that wanted to be a fairy forever. But years of lost weekends, of missing my own family’s events, constant back pain and exhaustion from hours of painting faces and loading and unloading my car had taken its toll. As I left behind my weekly face painting practice, I naturally needed to replace it with something else.

I started with painting canvases, playing with pouring medium and creating fun, messy, shimmery statement pieces. I joined Fluid Art groups on Facebook, watched YouTube videos and learned how to create funky effects and cells and dirty pours. I had a great time, but canvases are big and bulky to store, and pours take a long time to dry. Then I came across alcohol inks on one of the Facebook groups I followed. I loved the vibrancy of the colours and silkiness of the medium. As I learned to work with the inks, I also found myself working more with the energetic and spiritual elements of the colours themselves. I started using essential oils in my artworks to up the ‘feeling’ of them. I created artworks for all the Feng Shui directions in our home, using the colours that represented the elements of each direction. I made artworks

for friends who were going through difficult times, and would write intentions and affirmations on the artworks. As my artwork and creations started to take on a more spiritual theme, I also found that I could find meanings and messages in the pieces, and ‘read’ the artworks that people chose. I started creating ‘Energy Imprints’ (like an aura painting) and the readings were eye-opening. I decided to deepen my knowledge and understanding of colour, so enrolled in and completed a Diploma of Colour Therapy. I love that I can now use my artwork to help people understand themselves on a deeper level. I love that I can surprise and delight total strangers by asking them which artwork or colour they are most drawn to, and then telling them all about themselves. I love that I can combine my love of painting with my spiritual knowledge to give people an artwork that reflects their soul. But of course, in true Creator style, there are a number of other projects on the cards and in the works as well. So, if looking at my artwork and reading my words has sparked something in you, make sure you follow my journey on social media. I even have a little gift for you if you join my Soul Creator Collective email list.
