WA Note from the Editor

elcome to the Autumn USA edition of FANTASY magazine. I have been busy scouring the world to find new artists and creatives for you to be introduced to, maybe for the first time, and get to know!

I am honored to have Miss Clara all the way from Bordeaux, France as our featured artist. My gorgeous husband gifted me a custom drawing from her masterful hands for my birthday after I fell in love with her artwork in our local favourite French patisserie. The world is SUCH an amazing place to explore and even more so through art!

This magazine will continue to be a source of creating, empowering and inspiring the next generation of creatives and giving them a platform to share their work from.

Submissions are always welcome and I love receiving each and every one of them. Please email jclydecreative@gmail.com with your stories, poems, imagery and artworks and I will endeavour to get them into the magazine for you. Take care and spread kindness wherever you may be.

With love, Jules

The Legends of Print

InkFX Printing has been a huge part of Julie Clyde Creative since the beginning. Shane lives and works on the Gold Coast with an exceptional small team of printers and craftsmen and women who all love what they do. How do I know that? Because their prints are second to NONE and their quality always exceeds expectations.

I always hear business isn’t personal, but it has been for me since day one. It was SO refreshing to find a team of exceptional printers who felt the exact same way. In the early days I did ask a LOT of questions to get the best out of my prints with Shane happily helping me out along every step of the process. I am now at a point where I know if I ship directly to my clients they are going to receive perfection every single time.

InkFX Printing has a multi-generational background in the Printing Industry

Printing presses to now the latest technology in the Digital Printing space. A long history in the Printing Industry spans back to the 60’s when Apprenticeships were 4 years and when you learned the craft from previous print masters.

Heidelberg letterpress and hand-fed machines were the norms back then when printing was a real craft and trade (sadly much of that has been lost today). The dinner-time discussions and chats often included topics about colour, printing, embossing, perfectionism, and craftsmanship.

Our vibrant team of Trade Qualified tradesmen are Award Winning Professionals who have been photographing, reproducing amazing images, printing, designing, and keeping up with the latest trends in the industry for

from the Old LetterPress

decades throughout Australia and the World. Our team are all either Trade Qualified Photographers, Graphic Pre-Press and/or Digital Printers and Sign Writers. We have been specialising in Fine-Art Canvas Prints and Fine-Art Giclee Printing for many years and are continually growing the range of display options for images.

We love bringing new ideas to life when it comes to your photos. We understand what it is YOU want, simply because we want the same. We were one of the first print labs in Australia to do the Chromaluxe Aluminium HD Metal Prints and go on to win many state and national Awards for the excellent quality and craftsmanship in print. We introduced a range of Boxed Canvases new to the Photographer market many years ago well before they were considered cool or even possible. We love producing colourful images, pure black, and white prints, touch-ups without having to ask for them, and images on your walls and in your space that GET TALKED ABOUT and that LAST!

Ink FX Printing® is a well-established ‘bricks and mortar’ business that has grown into the online world and moved away from the expensive and old retail world. We are most thrilled at knowing we can offer better deals, and faster turnaround and send our photo products all over the World so everyone can have Amazing Photos in their Life that Last!

InkFX Printing® was invited to enter the Queensland PICA Printing Awards in 2014 for the first time. It was a new experience and one that will go down in history as an epic occasion. First-time entrants taking out the Gold Medal in the Speciality Printing category and automatic entry into the National Printing Awards for our Aluminium HD Metal Prints (Chromaluxe Prints).

The following year in the National Printing and Craftsmanship Awards we won the Gold Medal again this time at the National level which was an incredible result and tribute to our staff and what we stand for here at InkFX Printing®. Quality, Speed and Value. Since then we have been privileged to win many more awards.

We utilize the worlds most Eco-Friendly printing equipment made by HP. Developed by HP with the support of the USA Government they have invested over US$200m in Research and Development to develop the world’s most environmentally friendly inks and printers.

The Tree at the End of the World

My back ached from the bag hanging from my shoulders. My long brown hair hung in sweaty strands in front of my eyes. The sun taunted me, beaming a heated smile over me. I felt my feet sink slightly in the sand as I took another step forwards. My breath was a shaky, ragged noise - nothing more. Regret filled my body. Why had I thought it a good idea to travel to the end of the world? All for what? To find a tree?

I fell to my knees, exhausted. My backpack fell to the ground and I unzipped it with my depleting energy. Inside was a half filled bottle of water, empty food containers, a flashlight and two rolled up pieces of paper. They both had information about the same thing – a tree, said to hold such beauty and secrecy, that no one had ever seen it before. I had told my Fa this, but he had said, “If no one has seen it, how were these written?”

I had been stumped on this question, until I had put it at the back of my head and escaped with all the supplies I ever thought I would need. It had never occurred to me how long the journey would take. I hadn’t realized that I was traveling to the end of the world just to see a tree. How would I get back home after that?

I sighed and uncurled one of the papers. It had an oil painting of a rich umber tree trunk, littered with glittering shiny leaves of gold, blue and purple. There were animals flying around the tree and scurrying below. The scene looked so peaceful. I closed my eyes and hugged the painting to my chest. Slowly, I leaned back onto my backpack, using it like a pillow and felt my mind drift off into a dreamless sleep.

“Is she awake?”

“No – otherwise she’d be talking to us.”

“Or she’s ignoring us, trying to hear sacred

information.”

“It’s probably not that – you’re always wrong.” The strange voices filled my ears, but I kept my eyes squeezed shut in case I actually could learn something. I made myself stay dead still and racked my brain for a memory. Where was I? The last thing I remembered was being in the middle of the desert on the scratchy sand, but now I felt grass underneath me.

“SHE MOVED!” One of the voices suddenly declared. I bolted upright in shock and blinked at the sudden light scalding my eyes. “See?” I turned my head and tried to bite back a gasp. In front of my very eyes, two giant mice looking creatures stood. But they had smaller ears and hairier bodies. Almost like… “I told you she was awake!” One of them said triumphantly. He had bright green eyes and a mischievous grin. His fur was a dark ginger color, and he reminded me a lot of what I’d imagine a dwarf to look like. I turned to the other one, who had darker fur, a little more brown with odd white ears and only two claws on each foot.

“I couldn’t care less.” He said in a squeaky voice. He turned to me and raised an eyebrow. “Who are you?” “Who are you?” I shot back. I stumbled to my feet and felt my jaw drop. Standing tall in the sunlight, a dark tree with colorful glistening leaves stood tall. I reached for my backpack, surprised it was still there, and hurriedly grabbed one of the papers. I unrolled it and held the picture of the tree up to the real one. I was sure the tree would be even more beautiful as I got closer.

“It’s the Tree at the End of the World.” The first dwarf whispered, noticing my gaze. “I’m Dune. And this guy of happiness is called Berner.” “Lord Berner.” The dwarf with dark fur snapped. “Yes, yes whatever.” Berner rolled his eyes, but still smiling. In the silence that followed, I examined my surroundings. If the glittering tree hadn’t been perched on the mountains in the distance, I doubted that there would be any light. The tree seemed to radiate all the light around us. I realized that there were walls around us, made of rocks – like we were in a cave. Dune and Berner weren’t the only life in the cave. There were squirrels and birds and other dwarves scattered throughout the luscious grass. I spotted a waterfall in the distance, attached to the cave walls, gushing down and ricocheting off the pond below it and magically flowing back to the top.

“How…” I whisper, turning back to Dune. “How did I get here?”

“We found you unconscious in the desert and checked your bag for weapons.” Berner said in a clipped voice. “We saw the scrolls of the Tree and decided to take you in.” “So here you are!” Dune said kindly. “What do you want to do here?”

I was lost for words. Then when I finally found my voice, all I could say was, “I wanted to be one of the people who found this amazing place – who visited this Tree.” Berner cocked his head. “You’re the first visitor we’ve had. Ever.”

I frowned, grabbing both the scrolls. “Then who wrote these?”

“We did!” Dune exclaimed. “We wrote them to see who would come and visit.”

“And it took them long enough for someone to come.” Berner mumbled. “This is amazing.” I breathe. The shock and excitement I felt covered any other emotion I may have felt. Until I remembered two faces I hadn’t seen in what felt like weeks. “My family.”

Dune frowned. “Your family?”

“I haven’t seen them in ages.” Berner frowned, tapping one of his hairy feet on the soil below. “Teenagers.”

“I understand.” Dune nodded his head thoughtfully. “It’s a shame you couldn’t stay for longer.” He grabbed my hand and slowly led me over to the tree. “Let’s hope this works.” He said. We passed birds and other animals that stared at me in wonder.

Dune stopped at the tree and told me to place my hand on the heart of the tree. The wood was rough against my palm, but soothing and in the way it seemed to pulse with a heartbeat. “Now close your eyes.” Dune whispered. “And imagine the place you want to be–” “Home.” I breathed with my eyes closed. A mental image of my room filled my head. “The magic that fills this tree should lead you home.” Dune said. “What’s your name, kiddo?” “Opa.” I whispered, feeling magic rush through me. I felt myself smile. “Well, Opa.” Dune said, grabbing my free hand and shaking it. “It was nice to meet you. I hope you have so many adventures in your future.” Then I felt wind rush past my hair and when I opened my eyes, the painted walls of my bedroom came into view. I sat cross legged on my bed, staring at the window opposite me. Suddenly, I felt something cold in my hand. I looked down and smiled. A smooth statue of a dwarf sat in my hands. Dune must have gifted it to me before I left. “What was that?” A voice whispered from outside my room. “Opa?”

Ma’s head popped around my bedroom door. I felt my eyes water at seeing her again. “OPA!” She shouted, running into me. She hugged me and Fa followed close. “Oh, Opa, where have you been?”

I stifled my sobs and whispered into their hugs, “Somewhere far far away, at the Edge of the World.”

How to write a fable

What is a fable?

A fable is a story that features animals, plants or forces of nature which are given human qualities. A fable always ends with a ‘moral’ which is a lesson that is intended to be learnt through reading the story.

One of the most famous fables is The Hare and the Tortoise. In this fable, both animals are able to speak and are competing against each other in a race. The hare stops to sleep halfway through the race because he is convinced he has enough time to do this and then rejoin the race and win it. Meanwhile, the slow, but determined tortoise, keeps going and wins while the hare is asleep.

Most of our best-known fables are thought to have been written by a man called Aesop, who is believed to have been a slave in Ancient Greece around 550BC.

How to write a fable

To write a fable you need to have the follwing elements, don’t worry the next page will help! What would you like the moral (lesson) to be? Where is the story taking place (Setting), who are the charaters? What is the problem? Then you write a start, middle and ending and the elements of your fable are ready to put together! Once you’ve writted your fable, we would love to see it here at The Fantasy Magazine! If you would like to share it, send it to us here.

Elements of a Fable: Moral/ Lesson: Setting: Characters: Problem: Beginning: Middle: Ending: Now type it up and put it all together!

Huon's Fable

Once upon a slow time lived Fox and Sloth. They were playing at Sloth’s house when all of a sudden they realised someone had stolen all of Fox’s grapes that he needed for Winter. Then Sloth found his boomerang that he left at the house! And then he grabbed the boomerang and the thief saw it and tripped! But who was it?

It was their friend Bear! Oh no he must have forgotten were his tree is again. He must have gotten scared of the boomarang and he fell quickly over. After a minute they made it outside to Bear and helped him up and said, “If you see a hole, don’t always trust it’s a left over hole!” “Sorry” said Bear, “I forgot where my tree was and thought it was a left over hole so I grabbed some more food for winter”. Then Sloth said, “Being a theif can come back and really hurt you!” Then Sloth, Fox and Bear laughed all afternoon!

Koala's Platypus Problems

Once upon a time, there was a cute furry koala a platypus and a spider. Koala’s bestfriend Spider was loyal but platypus could be rude sometimes. Then, one day at the green billabong zoo, Platypus was the most boastful thing in the history of the zoo! Breaking nests and being mean trying to steal snacks and more! They had to do something just what? They searched and searched until Spider yelled “Look what I found!” Then carefully discovering the spy box, they were ready to decide whether to use the spy box or not too.

They worked day and night planning, prank testing until Platypus discovered their plan and laughed so evilly everyone heard. So then he started making a plan for himself but then the next night Koala and Spider found his plan!. One dark mystery night, Koala and spider got prepared for their first bust but then green, disgusting slime tipped on them! They were so mad they were going to bust him more, but then Koala suggested”why don’t we get him with lies!” But then they quickly felt wrong. They thought lying wasn’t a way to break help, it was a way to break loyalty so they went and got a zoo keeper, but when they got there Platypus was gone “I swear he was here!”sobbed Koala, the zookeeper felt like it was the truth so he suggested “Let’s go check his hole” when they carefully checked the muddy hole there he was! Sitting right there with the stolen things! So from that day on Platypus was never boastful or mean again.

The End

Moral: Always tell an adult even if your mad [It’s for Koala and Spider, remember that!]

Fantasy Magazine is all about creating an extraordinary life for yourself through whatever artistic medium you choose.

Fashion is certainly one of my favourite avenues to personally explore and express myself through. How you dress, how items of clothing are made and styled together, creating jewellery to add that special touch...

All the puzzle pieces that can create such a wonderful adventure! So you can imagine that It thrilled me to bits that during the Christmas Portrait season that I received a special email from Red head styling guru, Bella Debi.

She is creating her love of style and comfort into an online business of daily style tips. As a red head she knows the frustration of color and style selection from season to season, so helps by sharing everything from casual comfort to simple elegance.

As a designer, I wanted to find her a brand that would complement her colour selections and a font that was classy, flowing but still easy to read. I think we have managed to create something really magical for her brand.

We took her brand a step further and we’ve created social media templates for posts, stories, reels and a mood board to continue to tie it all together. I love what Deb has created so far on her socials and can’t wait to see where it leads.

Artificial Intelligence meets Movies

Jules meets ai Cinematographer, Sophia Kornienko from KORNIENKO

I was introduced to Sophia, the creator and genius behind this incredible AI documentary on Ukraine, via social media. Our mutual friend, Kris Kashtanova introduced us and said I might be interested in Sophia’s works and when I first watched her movie I knew I had to learn more about her and this creation. I have watched this movie a few times now and I’m amazed at how she put it all together and inspired by her project.

Sophia says, “I have finally published the project I have been working on for many months! It’s an animated short based on an interview with a Ukrainian child who escaped Russian bombing. This is personal project on the intersection of journalism, ai research and animation, as most assets have been made in collaboration with D-ID, Midjourney and other image generating models, often via feeding raw monologues by the child (with some stylistic constraints) into the prompts.

It’s a continuous shock for me to be collaborating with amazing state of the art image generating models while my contemporaries in Ukraine, including digital creators like myself, are being subjected to anachronistic, benighted attacks and torture.

One of the reasons I’ve chosen to collaborate with ai for this project is because I wanted to emphasize this juxtaposition between civilization and crude obscurantism. I believe it’s not only a war between freedom and slavery, but also between breakthrough technology and rigid obsoleteness.

I devote this film to Milana Ostapenko, a brave 11 year old girl who survived the first weeks of the war in her native city of Sumy in northeastern Ukraine. We recorded this interview in Belgium in April 2022. As I’m writing this in December 2022, the Sumy region is still being shelled. I also devote this film to all Ukrainian children and teenagers. The future is theirs.

This short film is only part one of a two-part series. I am currently working on part 2, which is going to be harsher, black and white and based on the Milana’s mother’s monologue.

Where did the inspiration come from?

I met Milana, the girl whose voice you hear in the film, in Belgium, where our family have lived for the past 6 years. I have met her through another Ukrainian family whom we met in our street and who are still living in our apartment back in Antwerp. I recorded a long interview with Milana and her mom in mid April 2022 in Ghent, Belgium.

It struck me how mature Milana sounded and the topics she wanted to talk about. Before we even started recording, while walking in the beautiful streets of Ghent, she told me how women were getting raped in the suburbs of Sumy and how they had a family friend who spoke out about this had disappeared. Milana also told me she tried to talk to the Russian kids on TikTok, to no avail.

I am very grateful that Milana and her mother agreed to sit down with me to talk about their experiences and have supported my idea to create an animated film based on their monologues. They are two very brave young women who survived the first several weeks of the Russian shelling, whose friends in the nearby occupied villages were harassed by the Russian invaders, but who haven’t shut down or become paralyzed with fear. They were very open and very much oriented towards the future.

That’s incredible, what is the concept behind your film? The main concept behind my film is to show this contrast between 2022 as the year of tech breakthroughs, incredible leaps in ai, quantum physics, cosmology and at the same time the year of this anachronistic Russian aggression, taking us at least 80 years back in time, and partially even back into the Dark Ages.

I am amazed at the Ukrainian resilience and I believe in the children like Milana. I believe Ukraine will become a very technologically advanced society. Another reason why I made this film was to expose more people to what is going on in Ukraine today. The people who are interested in the new generative models and animation but might not have been following Ukraine. Ukraine can only survive and win this war if the free world continues supporting it.

Milania and her grandma have traveled back to Sumy in early January and found their missing friend safe. That doesn’t change how worried they were about her at the time of the recording for the movie, many people missing have never returned.

Abi's Magic

I have been using Infinite Painter on my Android tablet for years. I started drawing dragons inspired by the Wings of Fire books. As my skills using the software increased, I started creating my own dragons. I like using Infinite Painter as it is versatile and easy to use. It’s great being able to create layers to use as a guide and I am still learning all the tools it has available when adding texture and colour.

I like being able to create my own dragons, giving them their own name and individual characteristics.
