My hope for this magazine is to bring together all of the Fantasy Portraits and work that goes on behind the scenes and share some of my favourite stories in the process. Caroline Sharkey
“Why use paint and paper when you can make magic happen with fabric and thread?”
It was with this quote that a friendship was born and our adventures began. Caroline and I had connected through a mutual friend who was helping Caroline to find a local photographer for some work. We spent much of our first meeting zinging ideas and happiness off one another and by the end of the meeting I knew I wanted to collaborate more with her. We did just that and now have done a number of times over, but capturing her portraits this year has been by far the most important and heartfelt for me personally. Caroline mentors and weaves kindness into the community surrounding her and binds together creatives across the globe sharing stories of so many through her amazing Digital Cloth Magazine. I remember the booking popping up on my phone ’Caroline Sharkey has booked in Studio Portraits with you’. I had a little panic, a little excitement and a little ‘omg’ moment. To photograph Caroline, to me, was like photographing your most favourite human superstar. So... Like Lady Gaga had booked in with little old me.
The day came to shoot and we both nervously giggled our way through the clothes pile in front of us. Caroline had brought her favourite outfits and we were soon ready to start. I eased Caroline into it and warned her she might be sore tomorrow with some of her poses. It’s always angles with cameras and she nailed every one of hers. You’ll see over the page a few more images from her session. I love her images so much and love that you can see the stunning woman she is, and her heart that radiates from them. I cannot wait to spend time together in 2021 ticking giant bucket list items off together and spending time learning from her and other amazing artists at Sewing up a storm in the Desert, where I was accepted into their mentoring program. Just. Can. Not. Wait.
Walking into Womanhood
October 18th 2020 saw the culmination of almost 12 months of support and circle time for this amazing group of women and teens. Walking into Womanhood was created by Lily Isobella and her amazing team. This year began a journey with a group of teenage girls and women in the local Bellingen Shire community with the intention to provide a safe space for women to empower themselves and each other through physical fitness, mental health, wellbeing support and connection to community. It was initially created to create a space for local teens to come to, exercise and have some positive, strong female role models around them to help navigate the often tumultuous struggles of teenage years. Lily first came to me VERY excited and said, ‘Jules, I have had this GREAT idea and I want you to be part of it.’ Those words will forever bring us giggles as our adventures together unfolded. It was an honor to be considered as one of Lily’s mentors in the program but I sadly had to step out of the program in February as my son became unwell and needed surgery, and then COVID-19 came to town. Everything was put on hold.
One of the challenges of the program was a 5km obstacle course called Obstacle Hell. The ultimate 5km+ outdoor obstacle course with obstacles that were said to be fun, challenging, and most of all would get your blood pumping.
It’s mud, climbing, jumping, crawling, slipping & gripping your way through over 40 different obstacles. Lily and I reconnected in October and she invited me to photograph the course while the girls worked their way through it. I’m so glad I said yes. With zero fitness training myself and a 10kg camera back I followed the group as they navigated their way through the course together. They encouraged each other, helped one another and faced so many challenging obstacles together. It was such an honor to capture this united team. What started out as a fun way to get fit and stay connected, has now developed into a delightful program that empowers young women through mentor-ship, fitness, outdoor activities and social engagement. In this program, the young women develop resilience, self-confidence, and are seen, heard and supported by our very own community in their journey to womanhood. This incredible program cannot exist without the help of donations from the community. This year saw over 1200 volunteer hours donated to the program and over $7500. The ladies are looking to solidify this as an ongoing program for 2021 and have set up a donation page for anyone willing to contribute. Molding memories I am so excited to announce the brand new collaborations with Impressionable Kids Coffs Harbour and surrounds. I met Jamie a few months ago and I left our first conversation thinking how lovely she was the brain cogs began turning on how we might collaborate one day. Weeks passed and out of the blue I received the best text from her, and the rest, they say, is history. I am excited to meet all of the little people who will come through for hand moldings, but I have to admit I’m REALLY excited for the furry friends who will join us too! Jamie takes care of everything from casting to molding through to framing your gorgeous pieces ready for your home. I am SO thrilled to be joining her as her in house photographer and hope to create some special pieces for Jamie and her clients. Food Photography
Where to start... There’s no single time where I haven’t loved food; with the jokes from my family you know that is true. Food photography began for me whilst posted to the USA with hubby and the kids. I met a beautiful Australian friend who also had met another Australian and together we became fast friends. The second in our trio, Larissa was working for The Holiday Inn as their Wedding and Functions manager and asked me if I could come and photograph their menu for her promotions. Having never done a shoot like that before I of course said ‘yes’ and then panicked a little. How would I shoot it... What would it look like... So I did start to take notice about food images I loved and tried to work out why. Long story short we shot on a palette in the alley next to the hotel and the images turned out better than I could have imagined. The hotel were really happy with the images so much so my taco shot ended up on their elevator doors in the entrance to the hotel. Fast forward four years and my mentor put out to our group a challenge to support our community during COVID shutdown and gave a couple of suggestions. At this point life was getting busier but I loved her idea of free food photography for businesses for their social media and advertising for no cost. I put it out to the universe and had three local business’s reach out.
Through those 3 businesses my work ended up in front of the CEO of Global Eats who called me to ask if I would be interested in partnering with him to photograph local food spots. I thought about it for a few days and thought ‘hell yeah!’ And my first official job was with Retro Pizza, Coffs Harbour. After talking to the owner, an idea came to mind where it was based around the idea of ‘not just another pizza night’. With his permission and creative license I bought all the extra bits I would need to shoot with and the boards were created. This is definitely an area I can’t wait to continue growing and capturing. I love food and making it look delicious, which also seems to come naturally to me too. Mum always said I loved my food!
Fantasy Club 2020 Fantasy club has been in full swing this year and I have had an absolute ball watching all of my club kids each month and creating new adventures with them all. The past few months, we have been catching up with some of our images we had postponed due to Covid and I am SO proud of the kids picking up exactly where we had left. Having them all come through every month to hear what they’re loving and creating to those ideas and imaginations has really shaped me as a creative and brought their imaginations to life. Whilst I can’t share some of the kids images, the ones I can here and over the page, I hope you find as much fun, love and enjoyment in them as we did creating them every month. I’m going to miss you all terribly but hope to see you next year xxx Lots of love Jules

Fantasy Club
2021
Fantasy Club IS coming and is mere days away. I know a few of you are SO excited for the coming year, as am I! I want to ensure I continue to create for each individual child’s personality and that we all LOVE what comes from it. I learned this year that ALL of my club kids are simply amazing. We have a special bond now through magic and imagination, and ensuring that grows with each and every single child and their family who come through my doors is of the utmost importance to me personally. So please keep hanging in there while I take a couple of days to put together a plan and work out the final bits. Keep an eye out around December 11th- I have a feeling it wont be far from there.

Jamie and I have spent two Wednesdays together now since bringing Coffs Impressions to the studio here in Bonville. We were both so sad to hear the closure of Baby Bella, a Coffs staple in newborn and baby necessities which left Jamie needing a new home to cast the hands and feet of the littles of Coffs. It has been a match made in heaven (from my perspective maybe) as I have a little stream of bubs and their siblings through one Wednesday a month. I’ve had the pleasure of photographing a few bubs and creating a couple of fantasy portraits for their special frames. Jamie is a master craftsman and takes the molds, to casting them, building the frames and creating these beautiful heirloom pieces. I wish I had known about this business when my three were first born as I would have had them done asap. I couldn’t remember just how little they were, especially the twins, until
we had a gorgeous 34 week preemie in the studio today. I told her gorgeous mum this as well, but she stole my heart. We cannot wait to continue to work together and bring something extra special to the coffs coast. She also casts pets feet and having a pet friendly studio, please feel free to book your paws in as well. The next studio days will be January 13th and February 3rd 2021. Get in touch with Jamie to book your spot on 0413 656 728
Christmas Portraits 2020
Wedded Bliss
I had the honor of creating two special wedding pieces for this couple for their first wedding anniversary. Their mother in law touched base with me and we talked about what the couple both loved and things we could incorporate into their fantasy images. With the wedding photographers blessing, I was sent over a handful of images to look at and work with. Here are the final two images that were printed and framed on canvas and sent directly to the unsuspecting couple. News has it they LOVED them! Wishing you both a very happy 1st anniversary together, with many more to come! Thank you to your mum and mother in law for trusting me with this special gift. -Jules
