Letters to the Editor
he first day of Spring is just around the corner and we can celebrate it by participating in the Drive your Old Car Day. Due to the large number of people/cars attending this event on 1st September, the starting point has been moved to the Hotel Rezz, 20 Hamilton Terrace, Newton, opposite Thorndon Park Reservoir, at 10.30 am (or earlier if you prefer) for coffee and an 11.00am start. It should be a lovely drive through the hills ending with a lunch at the Old Spot Hotel, Salisbury Heights.
I was both surprised and thrilled to receive the President’s Award last Saturday at the Annual Dinner Dance. To be nominated in despatches by the President to receive this award, is indeed a great honour.
A big thankyou to Marg & Geoff Thomas, Roz and Peter Holland and Daphne and Bob Charman for organising another great Annual Presentation Dinner. Once again a good time was had by all who attended. Thankyou also to Michael Scarpantoni from Scarpantoni Wines for supplying their wonderful School Block Red and White Wines for our tables.
In addition I would like to thank our members for being part of my journey with our great Club.
This year we are continuing with our Cats and Cans at SA Jaguar Day. Register Secretaries have a letter which you can supply to your local Supermarket which most honour by supplying a voucher for you to spend instore on non perishable items to donate. This letter usually needs to be supplied a couple of weeks ahead. Pack your cans in the boot and brush off the winter dust ready for the big day.
PRESIDENT’S AWARD
I would like to thank President Di for her very kind words when announcing the award. It made me wonder why have I been involved for so long and the answer was soon very obvious-----I need to be with people and I need to be doing things----both great motivators.
But, most importantly I would especially like to thank my wonderful wife, Ros, who has encouraged and supported me through forty three years of the JDCSA. Without her by my side I am sure my on-going enthusiasm would not have been maintained for so long. I sincerely appreciate receiving this award and look forward to many more happy years with the Club. Peter Holland

ach of us as members of the club have particular interests in particular models of Jaguar and Daimler cars whilst having a general appreciation even passion for the marque as a whole.
It is no secret that for me the Jaguar XJC and Daimler Coupes are of special interest and indeed are loved beyond all others. XJC owners are a little like E Type owners in their devotion and passion for the model. In October 2015 we saw for the first time in Australia XJC owners really celebrate their passion in the gathering organised at Echuca to celebrate the 40th anniversary of the Jaguar XJC. Thirty five coupes gathered for the occasion and a new belonging emerged as a result. One specific outcome is the establishment of a Facebook Group called the “Australian Jaguar & Daimler—XJC Owners Group” Another significant outcome is the proposed “Jaguar XJC Tour 2017”. March 21—29 a kind of reunion tour with a difference. Hop on and hop off as you please. The Idea is for this to be a casual tour where we can once again get the coupes out on the highway where they really love to be. Entrants in the tour will be invited to join in from all over Australia and can join in at any point that suits them and drop out wherever they must.
LEG TWO will take us Bathurst to Port Stephens (via the new Classic Car Museum at Gosford) for a two nights stay where there is the opportunity to participate in the Jaguar National Rally and in particular put on a magnificent display of our Jaguar XJC’s and Daimler Coupes at the Display Day. The National Jaguar Rally will run Friday 24th March to Monday 27th March The opportunity exists if you wish to register for the full rally and forego LEG THREE of the XJC Tour, re-joining the Tour on LEG FOUR and/ or registering for the Post Rally Tour and make your own way home. Registration details for the National Rally should be available soon. HERE LEG THREE From Port Stephens we spend a night relaxing at Hermitage Lodge, Pokolbin, in the Lower Hunter Region as guests of Allen and Libby Williams, passionate XJC owners. LEG FOUR On to Wollongong for an overnight stay. LEG FIVE will take us to Canberra. (Via the beautiful Macquarie Pass). Canberra is the final official destination with the option of a two night stay. After which those who have braved the entire trip will disperse and make their way home. We invite all XJC owners and other Jaguar owners, to join in from all directions at any point on the tour and drop out at any point that suits.
The Tour will see coupes from SA, Vic, Qld and NSW participating, with SA and Vic. Coupes converging at the starting point in Griffith NSW.
The Tour Guide outlines the tour, accommodation and registration details (No Fees involved) simply book your accommodation and then complete the Form. Registrations are encouraged by 31st October 2017 Contact me for a copy of the tour guide contact:
LEG ONE of the tour will be Griffith to Bathurst where we will spend two nights, drive Mt Panorama track and visit the Historic Racing Museum etc..

Member’s Pride
The simplicity of Jaguars and my part in them going “Tata”! By Tim White
Ever since I purchased my first car in 1972 - a 1956 Morris Minor 850 with a broken water pump - there has been a desire to “tinker” more with cars.
assess risks, check availability of time, evaluate, plan, review - strewth! one would not do anything.
Since that time issues such as studying, marriage, children, career, business travel, sport, house renovations/moving and job involvement have significantly eroded my capacity for spare time to “tinker”. But, the desire hadn’t left me.
So there we officially have it – I closed my eyes and jumped and now the adrenalin is pumping! How hard could it really be to simply pull ‘stuff’ off one car and simply relocate it back on to another? For goodness sake it is the same car, body, panels, bolts and other ‘stuff’ – how hard I ask again?
So, with virtually no spare time available and more content for my autobiography beckoning to fund my retirement I took on a re-build of my beloved Amos (a 1962 Mark II 3.4 MOD)
I thought by approaching the task as a project, fully documented and task orientated, surrounded with an array of Jaguar experts and skilled tradespeople that it should clearly fall into place. Perhaps some further background at this juncture might be important. For some two years I hade been deliberating or perhaps more accurately procrastinating about whether to go for aesthetics or practicality with Amos. i.e. Wire Spoke Wheels or a new gearbox? In the end I opted for the gearbox on the basis that I wanted to really enjoy the pace and grace of Amos through the Adelaide Hills and what better way to enjoy this and get maximum from Amos with a Toyota 5 speed gearbox.
My next task was finding someone to fit it as I did not have the expertise (like I now have… LOL) to tackle Looking at the photo one could wonder what on earth such a job. Then out of the Laurel of a sports car would possess me to tackle such a task. A perfectly THE BOTTOM LINEEvan Spartalis. His immediate words were, appeared good looking car, running well, interior very you can do this “I’ll guide you”. Gulp! Me actually do comfortable; but there are two compelling desires that something I had been itching to do all my life? Strike need to be taken into account. sounds great. Firstly, Jaguar Drivers always want something better So after purchasing the gearbox we (including after a while. I suppose after 5 years owning a Jaguar generous amounts of time from Geoff Thomas) set now that itch is there. Secondly, if we kept stopping to about the (very) simple task (in comparison to now) of The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

changing the gearbox over. Quite simple really, undo a few dozen bolts at the front, take off some ‘stuff’, drop the engine down with old gearbox attached, disconnect ‘The Moss’, cut a bit off the tail shaft and bolt the new 5 speed back into place, re-attach the motor and do up the same dozen bolts. Ta da!
to me, as I could not see past the Olde English White paint job. Evan, ever patient pointed out some technical stuff to me which on reflection were very important and have become more so over the past few months and gave it the thumbs up. My gorgeous wife Sue was also very supportive of this approach as she is with everything I do. This is how the project started: Quite logical don’t you think?
The re-build process (and what’s of interest) The biggest problem I had was time: Do I hear a number of people sniggering at this? Basically Saturday’s till 1ish was my only access to the car on the hoist and if I took some leave from work? I had evenings to work in my own workshop on cleaning, rebuilding and painting the components.
As an aside, I am now absolutely sold on car hoists when working on cars. How easy is it compared to performing a contortionist act trying to get under, do something then get out from under the car when on jacks? Anyway whilst looking at Amos’ belly it was identified that the chassis was twisted. This was something not easily identified and the hoist provided a very clear view. This gave me something to think about and we suspended the (simple) gearbox conversion whilst I thought. Then Andrew Costi’s advertisement in the Classic Marque caught my eye. A 1962 Mark II rolling chassis with a new Two pack Olde English White paint job. Now I like all things ‘White’ and was very attracted to the car. My sports car laureate agreed to accompany me to see this rolling chassis. It looked nice and shiny
As mentioned previously I thought by having a clear idea of what should happen at each stage and have a number of parallel processes running should offset some of the time impost. What I did not envisage is that no one else would adopt my timetable. In theory it was brilliant – in practice it does not work. Unperturbed I plodded on remembering the old Chinese quote; “It is better to take small steps in the right direction…”. There is no question that one has to be fixated on finishing and also have a vision of the completed car in your head. Another important element for me was that I was not trying to build a Concours car. It was to be a Club Car; one that got me safely and consistently from A to B but turned heads (It is a Mark II don’t forget) when you cruised along the highways and byways.
Interior bits The interior look of the new Amos was not quite up to par. Decisions made for the interior included new hood lining, door trim (firflex) and insulation. Jason Robinson fitted the lining & door trim and we were very happy with the finished product.
I repaired the crack’s, split’s and break’s in some of the timbers. I was very glad Jason could remember where THE BOTTOM LINE it all went. In fact I was very surprised at the number of pieces that actually go into the Mark II. Another concession we made here was to use all new screws. Given the age of the car a new wiring loom was considered necessary. Whilst it was an extra $1,500 plus fitting and not budgeted, for peace of mind it is The Official Monthly Magazine of the Jaguar Drivers Club of South Australia

We did elect to replace the reliable reconditioned Holden 202 Motor and Tri-matic with my ever reliable Jaguar 3.4 motor. Not a great deal needed to be done with the motor itself. We had the rust in the water inlet manifold welded up and the radiator re-cored. The starter motor was re-wired following a check as they are difficult to replace once installed. The generator had previously been re-built in March 2007. An oil filter adaptor was fitted so that ‘normal’ oil filters can be used in lieu of the old Mark II units.
cheap insurance. Rod Smith from Classic Wiring Looms in Lilydale were fantastic and supplied me the rear section within a week of ordering and delivered the front section within 5 weeks. Rod even built in the loom for the radio and thermo fan. Very spiffy! We elected to have Dynamat insulation for the front firewall, front foot well plus rear seat and side panels with good quality underfelt over this and in the boot. This has extra noise reduction and heat insulating qualities. We all know how cold a Jaguar can get in winter because the heater won’t work or is that keeping the heat from the motor out of the cabin? I had previously had Willshire Motor Trimmers put on leather around the old baker light steering wheel so nothing needed to be altered with that area of the car. I did allow myself to install an electric aerial. The reason for this is that on many occasions one wants to only listen to the symphony provided by the Jaguar exhaust note and just as quickly one gets told to put up the window its cold and an ABCFM symphony is required; all without having to stop.
Engine
My model engine is an early 3.4 which had a rudimentary breather tube which meant that it simply spewed oily stuff underneath the car. Some might say that it kept the rust down on the belly but did make a mess. With some searching the replacement parts were manufactured allowing us to direct the tube back into the air cleaner as is the case with later 3.4’s
Gearbox Geoff Dellow (Dellow Engineering – Sydney) was extremely helpful when I was arranging to purchase the Supra gearbox. He asked appropriate questions like what model of Jaguar, what length of gear shift do you require and other technical stuff which I had to get Evan to answer. A shiny and clean looking gearbox arrived a few days later complete with all the appropriate extras required to attach to the car. The conversion was relatively straight forward – well for Evan it was. I certainly learnt plenty and I am not talking language.
Suspension The new front and rear ends were not bad from the springs perspective and all other parts but we replaced the front & rear shockers from the grey Mark II as they were quite good.
Last Week! As the weeks progressed the various bits and pieces at Evan’s and in my garage slowly moved from the floor to the car.
THE BOTTOM LINE My new target date was SA Jag Day on the 19th October 2008 and importantly to get it out of Evan’s garage (he needed the space) and back home. This way I could work on it after work during the week plus extra time on weekends. I got it home on the 4th October and spent two solid weeks finishing the chrome, doors and inside fit-out. within a reasonable budget to a quality “Club Car” standard.
Despite all this ridiculous bravado the job could not have been contemplated, undertaken and completed without the incredible assistance from Evan Spartalis who afforded me the opportunity to tackle the job. It was a pleasure to be his apprentice, searching around the workshop for tools I am sure did not exist and being chastised for not putting the mysterious tools back in the right spot. Seriously though having the exclusive use of a hoist and access to his knowledge was terrific. Come the 19th October I was able to drive it there and display it. It is amazing how many pieces there are and I am pleased that there are only nuts and bolts left!!
The finale It is essential that one embarks on such a project with the capacity to spend more than the budget if one wants to get the car back on the road sooner rather than later. This is bought about by unforeseen circumstances and repairs that become necessary. I am not talking about an “open check book” restoration that allows one to get the job done quickly and at a high standard. I believe we completed the job
Piece of cake really Take stuff off; put stuff on. Jaguars of Amos’ ilk are not too complicated. Perhaps Tata Motors think the same and believe simply putting the Jaguar Leaper onto the People’s Car will add value. If so it is “Tata” for Jaguar’s as we know them. I hope my over simplification had nothing to do with this? Would I do it again – absolutely! I am feeling so confident I suggested to Sue that I might buy a Cobra as a rolling chassis and put the missing stuff on myself. Obviously, the immediate response can’t be printed as children may read the article but I am confident that this will happen sometime before I am buried in Amos. Tim White
