“Silly Season or Silly People?” “Christmas gift suggestions: To your enemy, forgiveness. To an opponent, tolerance. To a friend, your heart. To a customer, service. To all, charity. To every child, a good example. To yourself, respect." ~ Oren Arnold As I pondered this quote my first thought was, Why do we wait for Christmas to give these gifts? Surely this is an aspiration that should be with us throughout the whole year. My second thought was to consider the commercialisation of Christmas. Not that I am against the traditional gift giving at Christmas, (although I do hate shopping at the best of times) nor the cards and celebrations. But somehow, we usually miss the point of it all. The rushing about, the activities we try to cram into a few weeks and the family expectations we try to live up to. How telling it is that we often refer to the Christmas Season as the ‘Silly Season’. Reflecting the stress and anxiety we insist on causing ourselves at this time of the year. But it is not the season that is at fault here, it is ’Silly People’ who are at fault. I came across this quote that is food for thought. “I sometimes think we expect too much of Christmas Day. We try to crowd into it the long arrears of kindliness and humanity of the whole year. As for me, I like to take my Christmas a little at a time, all through the year. And thus I drift along into the holidays--let them overtake me unexpectedly--waking up some fine morning and suddenly saying to myself: 'Why this is Christmas Day!’”~ David Grayson (1870-1946), So lets not be ‘silly’ this Christmas, but rather think about the most important gifts we can give. Letters to the Editor Dear Phil I was delighted to announce at the November General Meeting that Bill Browne has offered to fill the position of Events Coordinator for the club and it gives me great pleasure to welcome Bill as a member of the Executive Committee. We look forward to his wise counsel at our meetings. Bill and Margaret joined the Club in February 2010 and immediately became active members, participating in Club runs, General Meetings and the Compact Register. They are the proud owners of a delightful white Mark 2. The Jaguar “disease” soon took hold and a mid-2000’s S-type later joined the fold. Bill has always had an interest in classic machinery and also owns a 1955 Matchless motorbike. He has rallied motorbikes in years past. Bill is a retired surveyor and town planner and I understand helped survey many of the roads in outback South Australia. Before finally retiring he also ran a fishing charter business from Port Hughes on the Yorke Peninsular. Thank you again Bill for agreeing to be the Club Events Coordinator and I hope you enjoy your time in the position. Peter Holland President

President’s Report December 2012 The December General Meeting will be a far less formal than usual, in keeping with the Festive Season. Members are encouraged to have a meal in the Police Club restaurant prior to the meeting. This will be a good opportunity to catch up with friends and get in to the mood for an enjoyable evening-----a brief meeting, some presentations, a few surprises, a raffle and concluding with a supper of Christmas fare, which will be provided by the Club. The next month will be very busy for the Club with Christmas break-up functions for the Registers in full swing, the general meeting and other family events. The Club calendar for January will be quieter, but I am sure many will find the time to still get together and do something “Jaguar”. I would like to take this opportunity to wish you, your families and friends a very Merry Christmas and a Happy and Prosperous New Year. Please remember that the next meeting for 2013 will be on the first Tuesday of February at the Police Club. There will not be a January meeting. I look forward to catching up with you all at the December meeting and hope that all your Jaguar drea ms for Christmas are realized. Drive safely. Peter President

IMPULSE RUN On Sunday 18 November three Jaguars set off to Old Tailem Town. We met on the Freeway Truck Stop past Mount Barker at 10am and then set off up the freeway to Old Tailem Town. After spending two hours at Old Tailem Town (the Healey Club was also there). We travelled on to Mannum for lunch. A stop off was enjoyed at Birdwood on the way back with opportunity for coffee and cake. Everyone had a great time and it was a great success, we hope to do another impulse run in March.

A MARRIAGE MADE IN EVANS By MIKE JAENSCH Less than two years shy of his 80th birthday, Don Evans would probably concede that his days as a Leaper are over – although Margaret, his wife for half a century, knows that he’s still an accomplished Growler, particularly when he gets frustrated with a Jaguar. Such as when he’s cursing about the impossibility of “trying to get any part of your anatomy into the engine bay without a specific Churchill tool. I’ve never found anybody who’s seen one, let alone used one,” groans Don. And as Don and Marg celebrate their golden wedding anniversary on December 8, both of them would happily concede that as long as Don keeps rebuilding and repairing those beloved Jags, that Growler won’t be far below the surface. In the nicest way, of course. Apart from trucks, in which Don carted freight to all corners of the country for many years (he’s been inducted into the Australian Road Transport Hall of Fame), Jags have been a fixture for around half of this devoted couple’s 50 years (and more than that number of cars) together, and their marriage has endured beautifully despite the trials and tribulations in the various sheds and workshops around their Fairview Park property, which regularly plays host to legions of Don’s “playmates”. Serial offenders, these blokes, generally retired and Jaguar to the core, like to pretend they’re actually “helping” Don work on cars. But there’s a more gastronomic reason for their visits – Marg’s home-baked bikkies with the customary morning or afternoon tea. For the record, the Evans stable has housed 10 Jags since they bought their first – a new, green 1986 Series 3 Sovereign. Of those, four have been total rebuilds, starting with the 1948 Mk IV Drophead that Don rescued from scattered rubble in a paddock and spent three years restoring to the point that it was judged the top Jag in Australia in the national concours in Canberra in 1996. It also won the top award in the Bay to Birdwood in 2000. That car’s now living happily in Germany, having financed another of Don and Marg’s great loves, caravanning, with a new van and LandCruiser. The latest – and, says Don, the very last Evans rebuild (but take that with a grain of salt) – project is another Mk 2, stunning in dark metallic blue with chrome wires. 7
For the romantic record, Don Evans and Margaret Byrne first met in their home town of Broken Hill in 1959 and married there in 1962, just six weeks after their first serious date – and after a smitten Don persuaded Marg to break off her engagement to a bloke she’d met on a recent trip to England. She had come home to say a more permanent goodbye to family and friends before she returned to the UK to get married.
“I wasn’t going to let a Pom cart a Broken Hill girl off to England!” But young Donald had other ideas. “I wasn’t going to let a Pom cart a Broken Hill girl off to England!” he says. So what’s the secret to the decades of wedded bliss for this inseparable couple, the proud parents of Donna, Dale, Allison and John and devoted grandparents of 14 and great-grandparents of four? What do they most love about each other? Don: “Her total placid nature – she has to be placid to put up with me. I’ve had a wonderful life, and Margaret’s been a wonderful wife.” Marg: “I just adore everything about him. We’ve always done everything together. I love him to bits.” * The author proudly counts himself among the “playmates” and bikkie hunters, and affectionately refers to Don as “The Doctor” for his successful Mk 2 consultations over the years.

David McKay's Mk 1 3.4 “Grey Pussy” The Jaguar Mk1 3.4 may have arrived in Australian motor sport with all the subtlety of a sledgehammer in 1958, but its immediate superiority over the stripped out, stove-hot Humpy Holdens of the era really should have come as no surprise.
The 1969 Series I XJC Prototype In 1969 Sir William Lyons was convinced that the market for cars was changing to one which the Americans had created where Coupes like the Mustang, Camaro, Javelin and the like offered a sporty car with lots of options. He ordered a four door body be taken into one of this secret departments and ordered the team to cut it up and turn it into a two door Coupe.
The Classic S Type (1963—1968) Celebrates 50 Years The S-Type was a redevelopment of the Mark 2. It used a mid-scale version of the Mark X independent rear suspension to replace the Mark 2's live rear axle and featured longer rear bodywork, among other styling and interior changes. Register Minutes the auto electrician he returned to explain that the light came on again. The auto electrician looked at the dash and asked Martin if the red light he was talking about was the one that was still illuminated. Martin replied with restraint that it was the one. It was then that he was informed that it was in fact, the low radiator warning light. A slightly red faced and out of pocket Martin put a small amount of water in the radiator and the problem was solved. I would appreciate if you could try and keep this information as quiet as possible. General Business

Apologies Sue Prior, Kathy & Pete Taylor, Peter & Ros Holland, Richard & Margie Foster, Carolyn Bullock, Ron & Rosie Bailey, Kathy Tyrrell. Special Mention Last month I left out a very special ‘Car talk’ entry. It was Martin O'Dea's. I had to write it out so that I could get the contents correct. I did that, and then forgot to add it to the report. So here it is:He was driving his XJ when he noticed the alternator light come on the dash. He had had a problem with the diode before, and remembering what happened to Noel and Carmel, he thought he should fix the problem properly. He bought another alternator for $160 and when he went to put it on, discovered it was the wrong one. He went to Dry Creek and bought another one for $250. However, when he went to fit it, they discovered that the shaft was 17mm and the diameter on the car was 16mm. So he went and bought a 17mm bit so that he could bore it out to the right size. The bit cost another $40. (To be used once) He put it all together, but, one of the wires needed attention, so he drove back to the auto electrician, who fixed the problem. On his way home, to his absolute horror, the alternator light come on again. So, charged up with a mouth full of abuse to give to

The late John Blanden started this annual event back in 1985 with Adelaide’s first F1 Grand Prix and has attracted the likes of Juan Manuel Fangio, Sir Jack Brabham & Stirling Moss.

The event is now hosted by the Sporting Car Club, with John Blanden’s daughter Susan Weber involved. Even though the Adelaide Grand Prix ceased in 1995, ‘The Eagle’ still continues strongly with great interest. The 2nd of November saw some 220 cars from all corners of SA. The event caters for all types of cars and enthusiasts who now see this annual event as a “must do” on their calendar. Glen Dicks (OAM) was celebrating 60 years in motor sport (1953 to 2013) and he was there in fine form. Glen mingled with the crowd handing out his calendar that featured pictures of some of the events he waved the black and white for. Everyone wanted to grab a photo opportunity (including me). With a smile and the usual flare, Glen waved off the cars to commemorate the 28th running of this great event. The sea of cars merged in with the daily commuters who were suddenly surrounded by cars such as Lotus, Porsche, Jaguar, Mercedes and even a fully restored Mini Moke. We worked our way up through Eagle on Hill on the way to our first destination - morning tea at Belair Country Club. Guest speaker, Bob Jennings , provided a fantastic history of his life and his involvement with motor sport and Adelaide’s Grand Prix. He recited stories of his encounters with many of Grand Prix’s racing legends like Rosberg, Nigel Mansell, and Ayrton Senna. With morning tea under our belts, the convoy headed off for the road trip to the Barossa Valley through the fantastic Adelaide Hills with even an option to drive the Northern Grand Prix circuit. Arriving at The Vine Inn at Nuriootpa, we settled into some good banter and enjoyed a delicious lunch and some fine, local wines. The afternoon saw an opportunity to enjoy the Barossa or head up to Mangler's Hill for some spectacular photos. This is an event worth skipping work for. Traditionally, the weather in early November is always great and the variety of cars is amazing. Kath and I will be there once again next year so put this in your diary. Pete Taylor 14

MEMBER’S PRIDE (Ride) This segment in Classic Marque features information on different cars owned and loved by our members. Please submit to the Editor photos of you and your car and a short story telling us about your pride and joy.
The Jaguar S-Type 1963–1968 The Jaguar S-Type was produced as a technically more sophisticated development of the Jaguar Mark 2. It sold alongside the Mark 2, as well as the Jaguar 420 following its release in 1966. The S-Type was a major redevelopment of the Mark 2. It used a mid-scale version of the Mark X independent rear suspension to replace the Mark 2's live rear axle and featured longer rear bodywork, among other styling and interior changes. The S-Type was available with either 3.4 or 3.8 litre XK engines but only in twin carburettor form because the triple carburettor setup would not fit into what was essentially still the Mark 2 engine bay. The twin fuel tanks give good range and the large boot answered the two major criticisms of the Mk 2. The styling of the S-Type was regarded by many of those who worked on it as being not altogether successful. The mismatch between the horizontal lines of its rear styling and the rounded front was least flattering when viewing the car from the front quarter. With a top speed of 120 mph the S Type was favored by the British constabulary as it could outrun most cars of the day. Production Numbers:
3.4-litre S-Type – 9,928 3.8-litre S-Type - 15,065
Doug and Judy Tilley’s 1966 S Type Model: 3.8 litre 4 speed manual with Laycock De Normanville electric overdrive. Colour: Opalescent Golden Sand. Imported by Brysons Victoria and sold to Day Stafford Pty Ltd. Proprietor, Mr Day of Brighton Victoria, on 27th July 1966. Purchased by A Genders in Adelaide in 1980. Sold and located at Prestige Car sales for a considerable time. Purchased by Glynn Jones in September 1984. (JDCSA member) Mileage then was 89,299. Sold in December 1988 and purchased by A J Power. Mileage then was 98,100. Then owned by Stephen Wade of Aldgate or Stirling. The car was advertised in Classic Marque November 1999 by Don Heylen. Mileage then was 115,000. Purchased by Doug Tilley in February 2001 from Classic Collectables. Mileage was then 117,700 The interior was fully refurbished and certain panels have been tidied up. The only major mechanical issue was a corroded head (probably thanks to Adelaide’s water) which necessitated a top end rebuild. Economy is adequate with 18mpg around town and up to 28 mpg country driving. The car has been taken to numerous Jaguar National rallies in NSW, Victoria and Tasmania and it has now travelled 135,000 miles. Thanks to Doug and Judy, for sharing this story with us We want your story, so send some pictures and approximately 200 words about your pride and joy. –Editor

Jaguar News Official Media Release # 2012
JAGUAR XF 2.2 LITRE DIESEL DRIVES INTO THE AUSTRALIAN BOOK OF RECORDS Jaguar Australia and The Australian Book of Records are pleased to announce that from September 24, until October 17, 2012 a team of 10 drivers, drove a Jaguar XF 2.2-litre diesel round the 13,925 km coastal road route of Australia, and established the lowest fuel consumption for the ‘Under 3 Litre Diesel Automatic’ category. This exciting drive started from Jaguar HQ, 65 Epping Road, North Ryde, NSW and was under the watchful eye of The Australian Book of Records chief witness, retired Police Inspector Mr. Philip Swindells. Helen and John Taylor ‘the world’s most fuel efficient couple’, headed the drive and in relay fashion en route, many other Australians ranging from 24 to 66 years of age, embraced the opportunity to get ‘behind the wheel’ of the Jaguar XF 2.2-litre diesel vehicle. They demonstrated by driving in a safe, smart fashion they could all improve their fuel efficiency and drive their way into the record books. The record-breaking drive concluded in Sydney at Jaguar HQ, the day before the opening of the Australian International Motor Show, where the Jaguar XF and footage of its adventures, are on display. Helen and John will be sharing their drive stories and tips on fuel economy with visitors to the Motor Show. “Jaguar wanted to demonstrate to everyday drivers how they can drive safer, smarter, save fuel, save money and reduce CO2 emissions, as well as break Australian National Fuel Economy Driving Records. The result of 3.98 L/100 km (71 mpg) is outstanding and we are pleased to have the Jaguar XF listed as a record breaker in The Australian Book of Records,” said Nariné Salmasi, Jaguar Marketing and Public Affairs Specialist. The last of the relay driving team was Sara Gipton, Greenfleet CEO, who is an avid fuel economy supporter. The Taylors have chosen Greenfleet to offset their carbon emissions responsibly. On the Jaguar drive around Australia Greenfleet calculated the CO2 emissions used at 107 grams per kilometre. Anyone wishing to offset their emissions can log onto www.greenfleet.com.au. It's exactly 50yrs since the Daimler 2.5-litre V8 first went on sale. Tim Coronel looks back over half a century ... By the late 1950s, Daimler was in a bind. The glory days of selling chassis to coachbuilders were largely over. The large Regency/104 saloons were selling slowly. The glamorous but controversial Dockers had bowed out under a cloud. In the post-WWII era, every car manufacturer now needed a volume model: mid-sized, mid-priced, middle-class. Daimler had the Conquest, which was certainly a fine car, but it struggled up against newly released competition such as the sleek Jaguar 2.4- and 3.4-litre Mark 1 and the substantial Rover P5 3-litre. By the end of 1957, production of the Conquest Century had ceased (although a few remaining cars were sold in 1958). Edward Turner and Jack Weekes had designed wonderful 2.5 and 4.5-litre V8 engines for the next generation of Daimlers: the 2.5 went into the SP250 and the 4.5 was destined for the ultimate 'big Daimler', the Majestic Major. But where was the up-to-date 2.5-litre saloon that could sell in volume and keep the company afloat? Daimler's rather odd choice was to look to Vauxhall. At least one Vauxhall Cresta was bought, fitted and road-tested with the 2.5-litre V8, and body modifications were mocked up into a prototype (known as DN-250) during 1959. But for good or ill, Daimler lacked the resources to take development of the DN-250 any further. BSA put the venerable marque up for sale. Jaguar stepped in and bought Daimler in June 1960, primarily to gain factory space. While Sir William Lyons wasn't that keen on the SP250, he saw the potential in the 2.5-litre V8 engine and Jaguar set about trial-fitting it to the Mk2 body. By late 1961, development of the 2.5-litre Daimler V8 was well underway and the car was officially released in October 1962 at the London Motor Show. From the outside, there wasn't much to distinguish it from the Mk2 Jag – a fluted grille and boot plinth, D badges on the hubcaps; inside, seats and trim were a little different, with a split-bench front seat. A BorgWarner 3-speed auto was the only gearbox choice. The Daimler V8's performance was better than a 2.4-litre manual Mk2 Jag, although not quite up to the 3.4. Nonetheless, the Daimler name had prestige and initially the car was priced at only a little
less than the 3.4 Jaguar; by 1964 it was more expensive than the top-spec 3.8 litre Jaguar. The V8 Daimler proved to be a good seller through 1963-66, often to more 'respectable' professionals who might have found a Jaguar a bit louche (but who couldn't afford a Rolls or Bentley!). For 1967, the Mk 2 range had a facelift, with thinner bumpers and a few other revisions. The Daimler became the V8-250 and unlike its Jaguar 240 and 340 cousins, it retained fog lamps, full leather seating and wool carpets. Power steering was a common option, and a very few cars (perhaps as few as 200) came with an all-synchro manual/OD gearbox. The V8-250s were manufactured until 1969, with some of the last cars sold in early 1970. In all, 18,000 Daimler V8 saloons were sold. The V8-250 was the last Daimler with a 'true' Daimler engine. The short-lived 420 Sovereign differed from its Jaguar 420 stable mate only in badging. After a decade of making four different saloon bodies and six engines, Jaguar released the revolutionary XJ6 in late 1968. From now on there was only going to be one body shape and no V8 engines, so a Daimler Sovereign had an XJ body and a Jaguar twin-cam six (or, from 1972 a V12) under the bonnet. Fifty years on, a Daimler V8 saloon is still a very good car, comfortable, fast, with good handling and brakes. The engine, with its burbly exhaust note, is magnificent. The auto gearbox can make acceleration feel a bit sluggish off the line, but as soon as the engine hits its power band at 2500rpm, the car comes alive. At 4000rpm, you're doing 70mp/h, and the redline starts at 6000! On the move, it's a great cruiser, and there always seems to be a spurt of power when you need it (although it can struggle a bit up really steep hills unless you've locked the gearbox into 'Low' to kick it into 2nd before the climb). Cars without power steering are heavy to manoeuvre at parking speeds, but lighten up as soon as you get moving. Petrol consumption isn't great on short trips around town, but on longer runs at sustained highway speeds, 25mpg is achievable. If you've never driven one, tap one of us on the shoulder at the next club run and we'll give you a ride! Tim Coronel Right: Michael Pringle’s V8-250 saloon
Editor’s Note: We did feature the 50th year celebrations of the Daimler V8 250 in the October edition of Classic Marque. However I considered this very thorough article well worth printing . Printed with permission, from the official club magazine of the Daimler Lanchester Club of Victoria—Nov 2012 18
A Salutary Tale Michael Pringle (from the Daimler Lancaster Club of Victoria) recently received an email from Adelaidian, Howard Parslow (below left), with the following story. Alan Reddrop (right) was on his way into Adelaide and seemed to be having fuel blockage problems. So he stopped and left the car at an old established workshop which I had told him about. He received a call about 11am to say “Mr. Reddrop, I am terribly sorry…...etc.” What happened is that they moved the car to a spot which they thought was safe before they started to work on it. Anyway, they came back later to move it and put the gear select lever into neutral, pulled the “choke” out, and then pressed the starter button. Yes, you are correct… he didn’t push the gear selection pedal , and it wasn’t the choke but the hand throttle. So the Consort was started in first gear with the hand throttle fully out. The car jumped forward at speed and hit a car hoist with another car loaded there-on - and the hoisted car dropped onto Alan’s car. Moral of the story: If you are taking one of our ‘preselector’ Daimlers to any unknown workshop, make sure that they are instructed in how to operate our unique vehicles. We may be needing some Consort parts, but I will suss out what he needs. I know that I have a radiator grill and maybe a drivers’ door, bonnet and a left hand side headlight. If we need further help I will sing out. Cheers, Howard This article is reprinted with permission from the official club magazine of the Daimler Lanchester Club of Victoria . It will be of particular interest to our Daimler owners. Howard Parslow, is well known to many of our club members.—Editor

The Cat’s Giggle Entering Heaven Three men died on Christmas Eve and were met by Saint Peter at the pearly gates. "In honor of this holy season," Saint Peter said, "You must each possess something that symbolizes Christmas to get into heaven." The first man fumbled through his pockets and pulled out a lighter. He flicked it on. "It represents a candle," he said. "You may pass through the pearly gates," Saint Peter said. The second man reached into his pocket and pulled out a set of keys. He shook them and said, "They're bells." Saint Peter said, "You may pass through the pearly gates." The third man started searching desperately through his pockets and finally pulled out a pair of women's glasses. St. Peter looked at the man with a raised eyebrow and asked, "And just what do those symbolize?" The man replied, "They're Carol's."
A Christmas Gift A guy bought his wife a beautiful diamond ring for Christmas. After hearing about this extravagant gift, a friend of his said, "I thought she wanted one of those sporty four-wheel-drive vehicles." "She did," he replied. "But where was I going to find a fake Jeep?"
Praying For Gifts Two young boys were spending the night at their grandparents the week before Christmas. At bedtime, the two boys knelt beside their beds to say their prayers when the youngest one began praying at the top of his lungs. "I PRAY FOR A NEW BICYCLE..." "I PRAY FOR A NEW NINTENDO..." "I PRAY FOR A NEW iPod..." His older brother leaned over and nudged the younger brother and said, "Why are you shouting your prayers? God isn't deaf." To which the little brother replied, "No, but Grandma is!" —-——————————————
Judge: "What are you charged with?" Defendant: "Doing my Christmas shopping early." Judge: "That's not an offence. How early were you doing this shopping?" Defendant: "Before the store opened." ———————————————— Patient: Doctor, doctor, I keep thinking I'm a Christmas bell. Doctor: Take these pills and if they don't work, give me a ring. ———————————————— Q. Why is Christmas just like a day at the office? A. You do all the work and the fat guy in the suit gets all the credit.

Jaguar Australia are now offering some amazing price cuts right across there model line-up for 2013. with prices of the XF, XJ and XK models slashed by up to $64,500. Although the largest cut in price is seen in the XKR-s convertible with the 405kW/680Nm down from $363,500 to $299,000, but the savings on the XK range are significant. The Jaguar XF range has fallen $10,000 to $68,900 (before on-road costs). Whilst the XF diesel – the 2.2 Diesel Luxury – is also down $9000, at $69,900. This makes Jaguar more price competitive than its main rivals. The stunning Jaguar XJ now has four models priced below $200,000, long and short wheelbase versions for the same price For 2013, Jaguar XJ’s specifications have also been boosted by the standard fitment of the Rear Seat Comfort Pack which brings footrests, heating/cooling, a massage function and winged headrests. I’M FINE, THANK YOU There is nothing the matter with me, I’m as healthy as can be I have arthritis in both my knees And when I talk – I talk with a wheeze. My pulse is weak and my blood is thin, But – I’m actually well for the shape I’m in. Arch supports I have for my feet, Or I wouldn’t be able to be on the street, Sleep is denied me night after night, But every morning I find I’m alright. My memory is failing, my heads in a spin, But I’m awfully well for the shape I am in. The moral is this – as my tale I unfold, That for you and for me, who are growing old, It’s better to say “I’m fine” with a grin Than to let folks know the shape we are in. How do I know that my youth is all spent? Well, my “Get up and Go” has got up and went! But I really don’t mind when I think, with a grin, Of all the grand places my “Get up” has bin. Old age is golden, I’ve heard it said. But sometimes I wonder as I get into bed With my ears in the drawer, my teeth in a cup, My eyes on the table until I wake up. Ere sleep overtakes me, I say to myself, “Is there anything else I could lay on the shelf?” When I was young my slippers were red I could kick my heels right over my head. When I grew older, my slippers were blue, But I could dance the whole night through. Now I am old my slippers are black. I get up each morning and dust off my wits And pick up the paper and read the “orbits”. If my name is still missing, I know I’m not dead, So, I have a good breakfast – and go back to bed.
"Things men have made with wakened hands, and put soft life into are awake through years with transferred touch, and go on glowing for long years. -TECH FILESSafely Fitting Batteries By Bill McMonagle I just about have a heart attack when I see people incorrectly connecting or disconnecting batteries in vehicles. Do yourself a favour and read this carefully. I will refer to the batteries “live” side being the terminal above earth and the “earth” side as being the terminal, which connects to earth. This is because the original polarity of a lot of early Jags was positive earth and later models were negative earth. In addition a lot of early models have been converted to negative earth. The use of the terms positive and negative is inappropriate in these circumstances. Do not connect the earth cable first. Fitting the earth cable first means when you go to fit the live side you are actually working on a live terminal. It is all too
easy to short the live side of the battery to some part of the vehicle with subsequent molten bits of melted spanner flying about etc. This is a very real risk in the confined area between the bonnet and battery of early jags. In addition if the battery has just been charged and is still venting hydrogen there is an extreme risk of an explosion from the sparks generated from the shorting to earth and you [and you vehicle] can suffer horrible injuries from this explosion as well as being sprayed with acid. I kid thee not. The correct method is to fit the live side first. Even if you do touch the earth with a spanner while doing up the battery cable clamp nothing will happen, as there is no circuit for the battery to discharge, as the earth side is not connected. The earth side is then connected to the battery. If you touch a vehicle earth while doing up the battery earth side nothing will happen. Ceramic Coatings for Classic Cars Unwanted heat can be one of the biggest problems for enthusiasts wanting to enjoy their classic car motoring. Modern fuels and engine modifications result in higher combustion temperatures, and today's traffic can lead to yet higher under bonnet temperatures. Zircotec’s plasmasprayed ceramic coatings are formulated to help solve the issue of excess heat Our exhaust/manifold coatings offer the following benefits: An appropriate period look in many cases matching a factory or custom finish with >15 colours to choose from (including white).

A robust fit-and-forget coating protecting components
against corrosion and eliminating the need for unsightly exhaust wrap. Lower exhaust temperatures - reduced by ~33%. Reduced heat losses from the exhaust resulting in
lower under bonnet temperatures - typically ~30oC for classic car applications.
Protection for vulnerable components close to the ex-
haust; protecting paintwork and increasing the life of under bonnet components such as: electrics; starter motor; alternator; battery; distributor; hoses; rubber bushes, etc. Improved engine performance and reliability. Lower

under bonnet temperatures help avoid fuel evaporation and problems with hot starts. Lower air intake temperatures lead to increased engine power and fuel economy. Reduced heat soak through footwells, bulkheads, etc.
so drivers are potentially cooler, more comfortable, and more able to concentrate. 26
XK Cylinder Head Repair by Richard Maury & Chris Engelhorn Loose Tappet Guides: The most common repair the XK cylinder heads require is due to one or more loose tappet guides. The tappet guide is a steel sleeve, machined to press-fit into the head as a guide for the valve tappet. It is a tight fit and under normal circumstances does not move. The symptom is a clatter, usually evident in the exhaust cam cover area, although the symptom can appear on the intake side as well. This occurs due to the engine being overheated, which then causes the aluminium of the head to expand away from the guide allowing the guide to back out of the head along with the tappet, bringing the guide into contact with the cam lobe. (Picture 1 shows tappet guide starting to come up ) Removal of the cam covers is necessary to confirm the problem. If the owner is lucky and did not run 1 the engine too long while the symptom occurred, he might not need to have any tappets replaced. At this point, the factory method can be used to lock down the guides without removing the cams. However, if the guides appear damaged or broken the cams will have to be removed in orderto inspect the af2. fected guides (Picture 2. tappet guide damage). Also, since the valve covers are off this would be a good time to adjust the valves. Inspection of the guides with the cams removed will reveal only certain scenarios. The lobe might mark one or more tappets, leaving them essentially undamaged. Sometimes the guide will be raised slightly and look higher than the others, and if so, it should be tapped back down into place before being locked down. Impact by the lobe might wear away some of the rim of the guide, leaving a jagged edge. This does not necessarily cause a problem, so long as the tappet moves smoothly in the guide and the edge of the guide can be utilized for one of the locking methods describe below. If the guide is broken then another will have to be installed in its place. Used guides are easier to install than new ones. This is because the new ones are oversize on the
outside and undersize on the inside. This requires special machining of the head and then of the tappet guide once installed for proper clearance. Not all machine shops are capable of doing this job properly so a good used guide is usually a much less expensive choice. Jaguar has a special lockdown kit for holding the guides down
3
(Picture 3. Jaguar lockdown kit installed). The plates are set over the guide edges and do not rest on the aluminum of the head below the guides. We at Coventry West drill and tap threaded holes above the guide in an area both where the aluminium is substantial and where oiling is not inhibited. We then install cap screws to secure the guide. (Picture 4. Coventry West’s lockdown system)

When the guide is clattering it is basically "floating" out of the head's casting, so the head of the screw is sufficient to hold down the guide. We continue to use our method as we developed it years before Jaguar came out with a fix for the problem. We naturally believe our method is better but both methods work equally well. Locking the tappet guides down is recommend as a matter of preventative maintenance. If you decide to adjust your valves or if your cam covers are off for cleaning or polishing, then this would be a perfect time to lock down your tappet guides This article is printed from Coventry West’s web page with permission. http://www.coventrywest.com
