Club Torque The President’s Rap The new Club Registration (previously called Historic Registration) is now in operation having started on 1st July 2017. The new regulations are accessible through the club website or the government Transport website and they will mean considerably less work for our inspectors and our logbook officer. The registration and logbook renewal process is now much more streamlined for members. However it is essential that club membership is renewed on time to ensure registration does not lapse. The annual dinner (held on Saturday 29th July) is an important and enjoyable club function. Thank you to all those members who supported this event and congratulations to those who received awards (trophies and club certificates for 10,20,30,40 year membership). Congratulations to the organisers (Geoff & Marg Thomas, Peter & Ros Holland, Daphne & Bob Charman) on another great night. The recent new members picnic (we moved to a hotel due to cold and wet weather) proved to be very successful and worthwhile with positive feedback being received. Approximately 24 new members had the opportunity to

meet informally with several of our club executive (including register secretaries) to chat about Jaguars and other topics over a meal. A number of new members came in their Jaguars but the weather did not allow the “opening of bonnets”. Thanks to Phil Prior for his organisation. The success means we will consider planning similar activities in the future.

consider nominating for a role or volunteering for one of the ex officio roles in the club. The annual elections of register secretaries are usually held in register meetings before the AGM so please consider one of these roles as well.

The executive committee has been reviewing club expenses trying to keep costs to a minimum but maximising benefits to members. Club or event sponsorship assists us greatly in keeping costs to members down and there is an opportunity for a volunteer in the club to help us manage sponsorship. Communication is an essential part of the club and there is also an opportunity to assist us in keeping our website up to date. Thank you to Tom Herraman who provides great technology expertise to the club. He has a current focus on Facebook.

I encourage all members to participate where and when they can in register meetings, in register events, in general meetings, in club events, and in other motoring activities (where we can continue to promote the Jaguar Marque). The club calendar on our website is a useful reference for upcoming events. Our SA Jag Day is on Sunday 15th October 2017 at Brighton Secondary School and the Jaguar National Rally is on April 12th -20th 2018 in the Barossa and Victor Harbor - so book in these dates.

The Annual General Meeting will be held on Tuesday 5th September immediately after our September general meeting. At the AGM there will be elections for the club executive committee so please

Julian

Club Torque Another month, and another magazine! How time flies when you’re having fun! I’ve been having a great deal of fun recently, having just returned from a trip with the National Motor Museum touring the “Bush Mechanics” exhibition throughout the Northern Territory. A very special hello to our northern readers, and my apologies for not stopping to check out the local collection - I was running a very tight schedule! This edition is packed full of news from the world of Jaguar. We’ve got a number of new

Editor’s Column

model announce ments, including the XF Sportbrake (pg 9) and the all-new EPACE compact SUV (pg 15) - and what an entrance it made! Enthusiasts will also find interesting reading in reports on the restoration of an early E-Type, and more awards for the I-PACE concept. On the local front, Tim White asks for your input on the future direction of the club (pg 13-14). I ask that you give your consideration to the questions he poses, and respond to him in the coming

weeks. Please also note that the AGM is approaching (pg 16) - make sure you get your nominations (or others) in for positions on the Executive Committee! That’s enough from me for the time being - I hope you enjoy the edition of Classic Marque, and as always, happy motoring.

Rare 1961 Jaguar E-Type found in pieces to be completely restored Sean Szymkowski Motor Authority

Jaguar I-PACE concept named Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2017 Jaguar Media Press Office

Classic Motor Cars of Bridgnorth plans to undertake quite a challenge, signing on to fully restore a 1961 Jaguar EType that was found in pieces. But this isn't your ordinary E -Type. CMC has identified the car as chassis number 875256, which happens to be one of the very first left-hand drive roadsters with the outside hood lock. To boot, each piece and component features matching numbers and Jaguar's famed 3.8-liter 6-cylinder engine is present. The engine made 265 horsepower and 260 pound-feet of torque in its prime. The 1961 E-Type was delivered to the Belgium Motor Company dealership in Brussels in July 1961 and was sold shortly thereafter. 54 years later, the car was found in France with documentation revealing it had been imported from Luxembourg in 1975. The previous owner planned to restore the car himself, but work ended shortly thereafter. Now, CMC will take on the job, despite the fact it remains in pieces. "It will be a challenging project but all the factory parts are there and our skilled fabricators and technicians will do all they can to save as much of the original car as possible. It will roll out of our workshops just like it left Browns Lane in 1961,” David Barzilay, Chairman of CMC, said. CMC may be the best restoration experts for the job. In 2016, the company completed a nut and bolt restoration of E -Type chassis number 15, which was found in an abysmal state. This E-Type is most definitely in good hands, but judging by the photos, it has a long road ahead of it.

THE

The Jaguar I-PACE Concept has been named Most Significant Concept Vehicle of 2017 at the 16th North American Concept Vehicle Awards. As well as achieving the highest overall score to take away the top honour, Jaguar’s all-electric performance SUV also won the Production Preview Concept of the Year category. The awards, held at the Concours d’Elegance of America, recognise those vehicles most likely to shape the future of the automobile industry. More than two dozen jurors participated in a selection process that involved a total of 24 vehicles, each introduced to North America during this season's auto shows in Los Angeles, Detroit, Chicago, Toronto and New York. “Our challenge was to design an electric vehicle that’s distinctively and unmistakably a Jaguar – and one which demonstrates that an electric vehicle can be visually dramatic as well as practical. I think that the Jaguar I-PACE Concept has done exactly that, and is clearly at the forefront of the trend for more beautiful, more desirable electric vehicles. We’re very proud of it, and we’re delighted that the North American jurors have recognised us for succeeding in our mission by awarding the I-PACE Concept the 2017 Concept Car of the Year” said Jaguar’s Director of Design, Ian Callum.

Jaguar’s heritage of elegant design and breathtaking performance has excited and delighted the world for more than 80 years. Today’s world-class Jaguar family embodies BOTTOM LINE the Art of Performance and will grow again in 2018 with the all-electric I-PACE performance SUV, joining the remarkable, much admired and award-winning XE, XF and XJ saloons, the dramatic F-TYPE sports car, the F-PACE performance crossover – the fastest-selling Jaguar ever – and the all-new E-PACE compact performance SUV.

2018 Jaguar XJR575 revealed!

Chris Thompson Motor With a top speed of 299km/h, the Jaguar XJR575 is approaching F Type SVR levels of fast. The new super saloon is also bestowed the same 423kW/700Nm as the F Type SVR, but the extra weight (kerb weight is 1,875kg) that comes with it means its dash to 100km/h is a tad slower at 4.4 seconds.

Jaguar design boss Ian Callum says the extra performance focus in the XJR575 hasn’t detracted from the Jag’s ‘comfortable’ feel. “This is a performance vehicle, but that doesn’t mean we have had to cut any corners when it comes to comfort or design. “Jaguar is the standard bearer for interior refinement and the XJR575 is no different. It can go very quickly, but it does so with

the serene comfort customers expect from a Jaguar saloon. “That makes this a very special car indeed.” The 2018 Jaguar XJ range goes on sale towards the end of 2017, though Australian numbers (if any) and pricing for the XJR575 is yet to be announced.

But, as demonstrated in the reveal video, the XJR can continue on to its top speed in about 44 seconds. Rolling on black 19-inch wheels, the XJR575 looks a bit wilder than its Jag sedan siblings, save for the Project 8. The 575 also scores two new exclusive colour options, Velocity Blue and Satin Corris Grey, plus an XJR-specific rear spoiler, side sills, front bumper and lower air intakes.

A long-wheel-base version with an extra 125mm also looks to be available, which will also be 10kg heavier.

XF Sportbrake confirmed for Australian market Local launch of large prestige wagon just months away respect few of the boundaries that often define wagon packaging. Jaguar reveals that the Sportbrake will offer “enhanced knee room and improved headroom”, thanks to the longer wheelbase.

Ken Gratton Motoring Jaguar has committed to introducing the XF Sportbrake wagon to the Australian market in November. As recently as last week the date wasn’t locked in, according to Tim Krieger, General Manager for Communications and Public Affairs at Jaguar Land Rover Australia.

Comfort and convenience features available for the Sportbrake will include a clean-air zone (air filtration/ionisation), Driver Condition Monitoring, gesture control (for sunroof blind and tailgate), 10-inch Touch Pro infotainment system and a waterproof activity key.

Speaking with motoring.com.au for the global launch of the Range Rover Velar and the four-cylinder Jaguar F-TYPE in Norway, Krieger said of the XF wagon: “We’ll be launching that in late Quarter four this year; at the moment it’s looking like November.” Since then, the importer has announced the XF Sportbrake will definitely launch here on November 1, priced from $90,400 for the R-Sport 20d model. The importer advises that the Sportbrake will be marketed here in multiple variants, including a flagship model powered by a 3.0-litre diesel V6, producing 221kW and 700Nm for a 0-100km/h time of 6.6 seconds.

The Sportbrake is the next new model to roll out in Australia, but Jaguar has more arriving hot on the heels of the XF wagon, says Krieger, beginning with the small E-PACE SUV.

In addition to the 132kW diesel at entry level, there’ll be a midrange model – the XF Sportbrake R-Sport 25t – with a 184kW petrol Ingenium four-cylinder under the bonnet. Jaguar will release the range in Australia with a First Edition model featuring the V6 diesel. All variants will be auto-only, with the fourcylinder models offering ZF’s 8HP 45 transmission, and the diesel V6 bolted up to ZF’s 8HP 70 transmission. Both are eight-speed units.

The high performance XJR 575 is close, but Krieger would say little other than “The press release is imminent…”

The base model’s four-cylinder diesel officially uses 4.8L/100km in combined-cycle testing, helped in part by the ‘aluminiumintensive’ platform that keeps the kerb weight down to 1705kg for the lightest variant. Weight is capped at 1855kg for the V6 models. Jaguar claims that the new construction makes the Sportbrake both stronger and lighter than its predecessor, and weight is further reduced by adopting a polymer tailgate. The weight distribution will approach 50:50.

“Start of sales will be early quarter two, 2018,” Krieger told motoring.com.au last week. We’ll see I-PACE next year, in its production form, says Krieger. “I-PACE will be revealed next year… [as] the production version – and most likely towards the end of 2018 [on sale].”

Definitely ruled out for Australia, as we knew already, is the XE SV Project 8. “We were very interested, and put up our hands,” says Krieger, “but unfortunately the decision was taken that they would only do it in left-hand drive.” Prices for the XF Sportbrake range: R-Sport 20d 132kW Auto RWD – $90,400 R-Sport 25t 184kW Auto RWD – $91,400 S 30d 221kW Auto RWD – $123,450 S First Edition 30d 221kW Auto RWD – $137,300

At 4955mm in length, the new Sportbrake is 6mm shorter than the previous model, but the wheelbase is 51mm longer, at 2960mm. The wagon’s rear end will be supported by a self-levelling air suspension setup, which Jaguar claims will walk the line between sporty dynamic character and payload-carrying ability. Along with steering, transmission and throttle the suspension can be configured to suit individual tastes. Among the driver-assist technology on board there will be All Surface Progress Control and Adaptive Surface Response for driving on low-friction surfaces, and Tow Assist. Boasting luggage capacity of 565 litres, a panoramic sunroof measuring 1.6m², a towing capacity of 2000kg and a drag coefficient figure of 0.29Cd, the XF Sportbrake promises to

More than 1,000 classic & modified cars were displayed at Football Park --- reflecting SA’s reputation for having the largest number of classic & modified cars over 30 years old per head of population anywhere in Australia (being a positive for related business & tourism in SA). Phil thanked the 15 JDCSA members who flew the flag for our Club. SA Jaguar Day. Please pass any ideas you may have for the day to the Executive Committee. It will be fantastic if everyone can bring their Jaguar(s) along (in any condition) to make this one of the Club’s best ever displays of Jaguars. Tim will be replacing Peter as JDCSA’s ACJC representative. MSCA Report Barry advised there is a Mallala Sprint Series event on Sunday 16 July 2017. Classic Marque --- is often short on contributions, so please consider forwarding an article, for example (1) Register reports on Register Runs; (2) a story on your car’s history, details or an interesting drive etc.., (3) how you became interested in Jaguars. Classic Marque --- Phil said there are still 60 to 70 members receiving a hard copy of the Club’s magazine. It is estimated half could switch to digital and have been advised they will no longer receive a hard copy. Hard copies cost $60/member/year and so that equates to a Club saving of about $2,000 p.a. and that helps contain membership fees. However, the Club wants to make sure everyone has access to the Classic Marque and does not want to penalise anyone who cannot access the internet.

27.5.17 --- 239 entries left the Adelaide Parade grounds. The 239 entries had been placed into 39 ‘teams’ (where team members support each other). They were headed north through central Australia with a final destination in Cairns. More than 40 mechanics in support vehicle followed the entrants. Those in cars that don’t make the journey are awarded medallions that read ‘my car didn’t make it’. This year there were so many permanent breakdowns that they ran out these medallions. Even some of the support vehicles this year were forced to drop out due to mechanical failure , including a new Ford Ranger due to a failed engine. Dane & Geoff drove a 1988 Volvo 240GL Estate --- with JDCSA sponsorship banners and other supporter stickers over the car. They were only 30kms out of Adelaide when they had a flat tyre --- which naturally made them wonder if that was a bad omen for the 3,800km journey ahead (and for the return journey). However, the only other issue to follow was a shredded tyre on the Oodnadatta track. The corrugated outback roads played havoc with many of the entrants, but the Volvo performed well, although the tightness of front suspension components needed to be checked at the end of some or most days. Sometimes the suspension bolts were found to be just finger tight, so the regular checks were critically important for survival the next day. Many beautiful photos were shown of outback Australia, others showing some of the damaged cars, and others showing the different teams in fancy dress (as part of the variously themed days & nights, e.g., Trump night) and of the final traditional auction of

An important message from your committee... The Executive Committee has been pondering on a number of issues recently around the direction the club should be taking into the future, how it should get there, and what key values are important to the members (and therefore the club) as a whole. The comments below represent a draft of the thinking so far, and before we ventured further we wanted to share this and seek comments from you, our membership. The issues are broken up into a) Why do we exist?, and b) How do we do this? Once we have considered all the comments from members, the committee will publish the completed document. This will provide the current and future committees with a “blue print” or “management plan" of how we should operate, plan our finances, plan/arrange events and activities, and most importantly, how we communicate and provide value for our members. The responses we are seeking relate to the following questions: 1) Is the "Why do we exist" seem consistent with your perception of being a member of JDCSA? 2) Is there anything else in "Why do we exist" that you believe is missing? 3) Is the “How we do this” complete? Are there more issues at a strategic level we should consider? Please forward any responses via email to Tim White: casuti3@bigpond.com Regards, Tim White Treasurer On behalf of the Committee

Why do we exist? LINE amongst owners.” “To perpetuate the Jaguar MarqueTHE and toBOTTOM promote enthusiasm The value of the “Why do we exist” statement can be enhanced by understanding the thinking and discussion behind the key words in the above statement. An important message from your committee... From page 13...

Perpetuate: It is accepted that keeping the Jaguar brand alive across all its models since inception is one of the key aims of the club. Jaguar Marque: All makes and models since inception are included in the name “Jaguar Marque”. e.g. Swallow, SS, Jaguar, Daimler, Lanchester. Promote: This implies that the club and all its members continually strive to improve the understanding and appreciation of the “Jaguar Marque”. Further, this promotion means culturally that the members support its aims and that all the aspects detailed in “How we do this” and are positively embraced. Enthusiasm: To achieve the critical aims of the club it relies on its members who are volunteers to support the club enthusiastically ensuring forward movement within and by the club as a whole. Owners: Whilst there will always be an owner(s) of a “Jaguar Marque”, this term is inclusive of the entire membership of the club. i.e. owners, spouses/partners, siblings, extended family. This is consistent with the Family membership category of the constitution (Clause 6.2(ii)).

How do we do this? 

Promote the “Jaguar Marque” through displays, public exhibitions and other Club activities.

Encourage regular Club activities; which may include social events, register meetings, touring, sporting, Concours d'Elégance, and provide technical information and assistance.

Hold regular meetings of Club members to cater for their various needs and interests.

Encourage road safety and courtesy.

Regularly communicate to (and from) members through a variety of mediums.

Encourage the vitality of membership through having the widest possible diversity in members: e.g. age, vocation, experience, longevity of membership.

Encourage active participation by members where possible. This being the essence of how, as a club, we ensure members receive the best possible value from their membership.

Be open to all possible alliances with other like-minded clubs, if it ensures perpetuation of THE BOTTOM LINE the “Jaguar Marque”.

The Club shall be a “Not for Profit” organisation.

the E-PACE is as venerable off-road as it is on.

Dane Wilden Classic Marque with Jaguar Media Press Office

The new model is set to be bristling with the latest technology offered by the brand; the E-PACE has a range of up to three new visual interfaces. Most dominant is the new 10-inch Touch Pro tablet, which allows you to touch, pinch, zoom and scroll through all your contacts, music, vehicle and navigation options. Meanwhile, non-traditionalists can opt to have their analogue instruments replaced with a digital screen – a 12.3-inch, fully-configurable TFT panel. The third option is Jaguar’s most advanced Head-Up Display, a TFT-powered, LED-illuminated, full-colour widescreen system capable of displaying more information with greater clarity directly in the driver’s line of sight.

Literally leaping into the record books at its world debut (front cover), Jaguar’s new E-PACE represents entry into a new and burgeoning market for the brand; that of the compact SUV. The E-PACE is the fourth, all-new Jaguar in as many years and the most potent expression yet of rediscovered Jaguar relevance in the 21st century. “Oh, it’s got an attitude to it all right!” says Design Director Ian Callum of the new E-PACE, the most playful car in Jaguar’s 81year history, in many ways its most bold yet. “That’s exactly how I wanted it; a balance of masculinity and femininity; not too genteel and certainly sensuous; muscular and curvaceous at the same time. That perfect Jaguar balance.” E-PACE brings an uncommon sense of expressiveness to the compact SUV market. Put simply, it is a much more evolved design; simultaneously more clever and more beautiful than is typical in the segment. If it looks like a Jaguar, it should drive like a Jaguar. The E-PACE won’t disappoint anyone here – it’s a Jaguar to its very core. Riding on an architecture and technology developed specially for a car of its size, proportion and purpose, its Integral Link rear suspension is shared with Jaguar’s range of award-winning saloon cars and F-PACE, reworked only to make it more compact still. That means more space inside and more space for the wheels to travel outside. The E-PACE is a compact SUV in more than just name.

From wheel-centre to wheel-centre the E-PACE measures 2,681mm, a fact that, in combination with the compact Integral Link rear suspension, means passengers in the rear will get a real sense of light and space, with more rear legroom than some larger SUVs. There’s another 10 litres of space in the glovebox and almost the same in the two front door bins. In the boot there’s 577 litres of luggage space, or the equivalent of six carry-on cases with the rear seats in place. Fold them down and the space more than triples to 1,234 litres. Fold the narrower of the 40:60 split seats and there’s room for 1.6-metre-long objects as well as two passengers. It is clear that from the outset, the E-PACE was designed with versatility at the forefront of its existence. The E-PACE will be the newest addition to Jaguar’s PACE family; a range of vehicles that combine performance with practicality. The F-PACE performance SUV pioneered the brand into the SUV segment and has led the transformational sales charge for Jaguar, becoming its fastest-selling model to date. The Jaguar I-PACE Concept is the company’s first all-electric performance SUV and previews the production vehicle that will hit the road in 2018. The E-PACE compact performance SUV delivers Jaguar’s trademark driving DNA, a design language that’s inspired by its sports car range with the space and practicality of the PACE family. The E-PACE will be released to the Australian market in the coming months. Classic Marque will feature an in-depth report of the E-PACE upon its domestic release.

All-wheel-drive E-PACE models come with a choice of Jaguar’s new Active Driveline AWD system allowing them to be driven like any rear-wheel-drive Jaguar. In steady driving it disengages, meaning drive is supplied to the front wheels only, eradicating friction losses and boosting fuel efficiency. Re-coupling occurs in just 300 milliseconds.

THE BOTTOM LINE

Jaguar Land Rover’s highly-automated All Surface Progress Control – effectively launch and cruise control for less-than-ideal surfaces – is also available, as is brake-activated torque vectoring helping to maximise grip off-road and enhance stability in fast cornering when you’re back on the highway. New Members Picnic – Sunday 16th July (that ended up a “New Members Lunch” at the Pub!)

Words: Phil Prior

Well, we had good intentions, with a picnic in the park organised for new members who have joined the club in the past 6 months. Getting a good day for it in July was always a big ask in Adelaide; however, the alternative wet weather arrangements kicked in and we met at the Cremorne Hotel in Unley. It was great to have 24 new members join with members of the club’s Executive Committee, making a total of 34 people enjoying a meal together at the hotel. It was good to meet new members and get to know each other, and share our common interest in all things Jaguar, as well as outlining a little on how the club works with its Register Groups. Bob and Daphne Charman arrived late - I suspect the grand (late) entry was to draw attention to and celebrate the fact that it was Daphne’s birthday. We will not disclose Daphne’s age out of respect for the elderly - needless to say the three score and ten is just round the corner. The prize for the most adventurous meal goes to Malcolm Adamson who devoured what looked like a whole leg of pork. Malcolm was last to be served, and when his meal arrived it was obvious why. Well done Malcolm - no doubt it was worth waiting for! So a big thank you to those new members who came along, We hope you find it a little easier to fit in and get to know everyone as a result of our lunch together.

The Ed.’s Inbox

(Top left, above): A couple of laughs from Phil Prior - “No, they’re not for sale - I’ll get around to restoring them one day!” How many times have we heard that before?

I still can’t get over that amazing E-PACE barrel-roll (front cover, pg 15, 16, and 17)! I found some phenomenal numbers behind the stunt...  756 hours of computer simulation time.  10 millimetre margin of error.  33 barrel roll tests.  15 metre jump.  5.5Gs of force exerted on driver.  42 mph take-off speed.  270° rotation in 1.5 seconds.
