Other relevant projects are the Amusement Park Masterplan of Minitalia Leolandia in Capriate (Italy), Kingsborn Park Masterplan in Guilin (China), and the masterplan Choruslife urban campus in Bergamo (Italy). OPEN URBAN ORGANISM The design aims to regenerate a former industrial settlement turning it into a new living part of the city proposing an innovative kind of thematic public space, an pedestrian "urban campus" of health lifestyle, sport, food as an occasion for the generational human interexchange. The campus format also effects the energy design of the settlement based on the “smart grid� concept. A flexible design approach to architecture allows new emerging behaviors to happen. Hybridiazion of the functions merge the Arena with an Indoor Piazza, the Hotel and residential into a comprehensive housing subscription service, the wellness centre into a sport medical centre, and the public space into a landscape/hardscape continuity scenario.

CHORUS LIFE is a city model where the three generations can live, socialize and grow up together by sharing the same space. It is a choral concept as a set of services but especially as a social whole, in which every architectural barrier is demolished to foster integration between individuals, with the respect to the environment.

COMPACT PERIMETER - FLUID INTERNAL SPACE The complex aims to promote urban regeneration model that forms the foundation of the life principles, basing on the the soil re-use and the coexistence of different functions. As in the ancient city, the market, residence, theater, garden and street shared the same space that became the place of social, informational and economic exchange. The economy of the network and proximity will allow to combine a low urban density (0.51) with a high relational and intergenerational density. Fluid public space is integrated both physically and virtually. Nowadays, this operation cannot be arranged with the digital dimension and the network. The goal is to create a new type of public and integrated fluid space between the physical and the virtual with the identification of a continuity of points and opportunities, where the exchange can take place in both directions and where the physical location can involve in the virtual world and vice versa in the most open and natural way.

TRANSFUNCTIONAL CAMPUS. Low urban density - high relational density The basic idea which guided the urban design of the complex was to arrange the functions along the perimeter, starting with a monumental consolidated statement to the north, proceeding with a dissolution and gradual penetration with more open design and finally immersing into the greenery to the south. The volumes are arranged along the perimeter to outpace the urban character of the intervention by creation of the traditional compact curtain facade. The interior part of the site, on the other hand, aims to renew the perception of the public space, first of all, by designing pedestrian ariented spaces, eliminating, though, vehicles’ accessibility, and secondly, by a creation of a fluid connection between the various functions even on different levels. The road level remains the privileged one for the priority functions facing the street. The development of a fluid space allows also the simultaneous perception of alternative levels of access to other functions in a perceptual continuum that eliminates references to the morphology of the plot and facilitates the visual and physical contact between the different polarities of the complex. CAMPUS IS GUIDED BY 2 CONCEPTS:

• The function of the Sports Arena working as an attracting and regenerating point of the complex. • The concept of fluid open space, horizontal and vertical relationship between the functions. In the functional layout, priority was given to the logistic and accessibility requirements of the Sports Arena. In fact, its positioning and orientation tends to decrease to the minimum the influence of its service routs on the inhabited fabric at the same time ensuring maximum convenience and ease of access. The Arena is then placed on the east side of the compartment along Serassi street near the new roundabout which intercepts the direct connection with the ringroad and with the Rondo delle Valli. Moreover, this arrangement allows the Arena to be the main element characterizing the new scenario of the access to the city center of Bergamo.

LIFECYCLE BASED MODEL Chorus Life is a style of life that unifies three generations in unique city model of the third millenium. An accessibility based on the complete absence of architectural barriers allows the use of spaces by all the people of any ages and any physical conditions. Chorus Life was born in Bergamo but it is proposed as a model for revitalizing the urban suburbs of Europe’s cities without soil consumption. A proposal of functional and social integration based on low urban density but with a high relational density, on the multiplication of meeting and socialization opportunities.

Chorus Life is a sustainable environment and mobility. The integration of sports activities, entertainment, commerce, residence and accomodation alltogether with green spaces and all the basic services, supported, moreover, by the metropolitan tram network increases the quality of the area and reduces the use of the private car. Chorus Life is a security. A total surveillance coverage of all public areas, a special attention to the lighting of the green open spaces and areas, the regulation of the accesses and always active central control system allow maximum serenity and tranquility of life. Chorus Life is digital. All the services and the functions would be integrated to the unique digital platform available for the access to all the services and information in the most immediate and natural way possible on all the types of devices. The masterplan defined an area of about 250,000 square meters 10 km south of the urban area of Guilin, consisting of a commercial village, sports facilities and a four-star hotel with 200 rooms. The idea is to imagine a village in growth surrounding the static hotel building, like the bamboo forestsurrounds the mountains that characterize the area. The village is, in fact, made up of one large coverage, which covers trade pavillions arranged in a pattern that mimics the matrix of the existing village to the nord. The hotel is the symbolic landmark of the entire complex.

The village in fact consists of a large shading canopy beneath which there are placed the new retail gallery, organized according to the matrix that reproduces the array of the existing village to the north. The hotel is the symbolic landmark of the entire complex. A circular base, containing different functions itself, carries the typologial structure of the upper floors which grows peripherally and forms a ring of rooms ending up on different levels and on various heights to provide the best exposure to the sun and the panoramic views from the all rooms. The ring is overlaid by a shading canopy that curves folowing different altitudes of the building.

At the center of the circle basement there is a water surface, a few centimeters deep, which reflects the prospects of the internal ring of the hotel. The idea of the water courtyard reproduces in architectural terms the symbolic image of the mountains reflected in the water of the Lijiang River.

The idea of the water courtyard reproduces in architectural terms the symbolic image of the mountains reflected in the water of the Lijiang River.


Archaeological dig We have been looking for the soul of the city inside the ground. We searched and found a future existing since ever, a building, an organism who is natural and synthetic at the same time, we behaved as in an archaeological excavation in which we did not find the past but we perceived the future. Archaeological square Outside spaces are mainly concentrated in the big archeological square located in the center of the project area, where there isa 45 meter respect stripe next to the Holy Trinity Cathedral. In fact there is a 5meter high covering structure which is the roofing of the building: it becomes empty when it encounters the stripe, becoming a translucid cover of the big public open space.

Public flow All public pedestrian walks go through this area of the archeological square which not only belongs to the campus: it’s an urban space, a going-through area and a place where to stop. Internal flows Access to school is lower than the cathedral level. This lets the building having a unique main entrance (important for security reasons) that also unifies internal flows. In this way eve-ryone can reach any place inside the school.

Site: Nanhe, China Plot Area: 5.350.000 sqm (535 Ha) Building Gross Surface: 4.500.000 sqm (450 Ha) Design: JDP architects Work status: First prize international competition Professional Role: Urban design, masterplan, architectural concept The idea put in the base of the project refers to the studies of Leonardo da Vinci, who put the water canals of the city and the pedestrian circulation on different levels. The metaphor for the landscape concept has been the double seventh festival legend. The east-west artificial river, obtained by joining together the three existent natural water sources lakes, is the structural and landscaping spine of the park. The river in the legend was the element which divided for ever the two characters of the story. Every connection between north and south has to jump over the river using one of the seven bridges of the town.

Thermal scheme

Instead of the usual skyscrapers we did like to create an unespected building shape, that remains indelibly in the memory of tourists visiting the town and can became an unforgettable memory of Nan He. The intention of giving to the building a shape that could recall the maximum symbolism has led to a central geometrical shape instead of the banal height-developed skyscraper silhouette. The structure is composed of two curved buildings joined at the top and at the base, that dance and embrace. The two buildings are located on the two opposite sides of the artificial canal and symbolize Niu Lang and Zhi Nu, the two characters of the Double Seventh legend, separated forever by a river. The two flat facades are reminiscent of the branches of the speaking tree that in the legend was talking to the young mandarino Niu Lang. A faceted glass ring around the building and the central hole of the building resemble a diamond cut. The building has 35 storeys and is 170 meters high. The function can be a mixing between offices, hotel and residential.

CONCEPT CHINESE ICONOGRAPHY The architectural concept is inspired by the strong iconic value of jade discs and numerological tradition of fengh shui. In particular, the double disc of jade ( bi-­disk ) is the royal symbol of ancient Chinese dynasty that reigned in this area around 2000 years ago. The building reflected in the water of the river creates exactly the same image: a double jade disc. This figure also corresponds to the number 8 - the infinity symbol in Chinese culture.

STORYTELLING The main purpose of the landmark building design has been to get the maximum result in terms of memorability for turists and visitors. The key idea to get this target has been to find a strong link with the local traditions and culture of the city. We chose the traditions of Nanyue King, basing on the experience of the museum of Nanyue King Tomb Treasures in Guangzhou.

MASTERPLANNING URBAN ROLE The building plays a key and strong urban role: it is the real south gate of the city and a sorto of south gate for the entire China. For the people crossing the Perl river on the bridge and arriving both from Macao and from the brand new south high speed railway station. Building using a closed and central structure instead of the usual western skyscrapers stereotype. Therefore the architecture is fully defined, and iconic, very close to the Chinese way of perceiving and understanding. It’s a sort of “urban logo” that works as a landmark in the same way that ideograms are used in the Chinese writing, instead of the alphabet.

CONCEPT

This project takes its origins from the desire of the client to create a building that would go beyond the simple role of a container for an industrial production, but would reach the rank of the proper industrial architecture, capable of representing of the role that manufacturing industry bear in the context of human society as a place where the processing of the material creates added value. The factory is thus understood as the place responsible for the creation and distribution of wealth. The facade of the office building is the element in which materializes the awareness of this irreplaceable and vital civic role for the functioning and development of society. It is inspired by the feeling of firmness and solidity, which is carried by the material of the stone assumed in the form of Renaissance “bugnato�, appropriately redesigned in a contemporary form that adds to the architecture the identifying categories of modernity: dynamism and lightness.

PROJECT Due to the south exposure, the facade of the office building had to perform also a shading filter function. This was achieved by giving a strong depth to the stone facade coating and structuring it in the form of a solar shading to break the height of the lighted windows. The prospect therefore acquires three-dimensional strength and importance, becoming the key element of the architecture.

CONCEPT THE SPEED FACTORY A vision of modern industry, if it is to keep pace with changing times, cannot ignore the need for innovation. In the third millennium the daily challenge that industrial production faces from the market must elicit an adequate response, based on a precise conception of quality that fully covers all stages of the production process, all the aspects related to the life and growth of a company. This means facing up to courageous decisions, which imply commitment, passion - and above all vision - and which are able to see beyond the mere technological and industrial content that is strictly related to production. Far this reason, fully espousing the goal of quality cannot ignore considering the question of the architecture of production sites: the buildings that house offices, laboratories, workshops, assembly lines, storage facilities are the spaces in which products are imagined, designed and made before they are even placed on the market, they are the daily “home� of the players, managers, office staff and workers who, by their commitment, contribute to the final result. The building’s architecture expresses the same concept of innovation that the company pursues in its production policies.

PROJECT ENGINES, SPEED, INNOVATION Behind the glass surface, pale blue neon lights illuminate the exterior and exalt the architectural features of the building. They show up the racing department guttering, incorporated into the outer extension of the cylinder. Disguised behind the aluminium cladding, simple neon lamps again trace a trail of light along the horizontal trough. The lighting design is completed vertically by the chimneys. The metal structure holding them is actually screened by blue polycarbonate panels and contains a double row of neon lights. The spaces occupied by the offices and the racing department are separated by a structural gap that serves as a expansion joint and is the site of the entrance. This space, two metres wide and extending along the whole depth of the building, contains the reception, staircases and elevator. To emphasise its suspension in the building’s continuum the solution for the staircase presents a kind of unexpected event the stringers, flight and other parts seem to be falling into space, held back during their fall by the supporting elements in the walls. There is no hint of this from the outside, nevertheless this necessary pause in the internal organisation does not bring the visitor to a halt. The light, fluctuating staircase becomes a variation on the theme of speed. Its dynamism is perceived even more strongly when travelling vertically through the empty space in the glass elevator.

THE FUNCTION OF FORM The attempt is to give architecture an iconic force, making it a single compositional exemplar that universally communicates formal and symbolic volumetric emotions, laden with meaning and senses referring analogously to the civil, institutional or simply private role of a building. In the compositional-design development of the building far Polini Motori, perception in movement from the main road was the cause of the fraying and formal contamination applied to the cylinder motif by the introduction of the continuous faรงade for the offices and the horizontal cuts made into the cylindrical sheath, The aim was to modify the form, enhancing the iconic-symbolic function referring to the categories of figurative imagination linked with the world of engines and racing: the aesthetics of mechanics and speed. This compositional route is a complete alternative to the deduction of form from function.
