The Living Building Challenge is a building certification program, that focus on define the most advance measure of sustainability in the built environment possible today. The Challenge is comprised of seven performance categories called Petals: • Place • Water • Energy • Health and happiness • Materials • Equity • Beauty “Petals” are subdivided in a total of 20 imperatives, each of which focuses on an specific sphere of influence. Hawaii Preparatory Academy Energy Lab (Living building challenge certificate 2.0)
• Site: it was built over the campus bio waste dumping area where trees and debris for a prior campus project.
• Water: it harvest 6,593 gal/yr from the local rain, and it uses 197.3 gal/yr.
• Energy: it uses photovoltaic panels to produce 38,994 KWh, and it only uses 19,090 KWh
• Health:
low-VOC and zero VOC materials and finishes, air changes every hour.
• Materials: Distance radius and density threshold limits
for red list compliant materials selections were challenging for the project and led to some creative solutions by the team.
