Nick Lybarger ‘05 finished a PhD in Climate Dynamics in August at George Mason University. He is working for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Nick is on board with #CKSCaresForCreation!

After excelling at Christ the King School, Elizabeth Wehby, CKS Class of 2015, graduated from Father Ryan High School as the Class Salutatorian.

While enrolled at Father Ryan, Elizabeth took 10 AP courses and held a 100.7258 cumulative weighted GPA through eight semesters. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Cardinal Newman Association, Cum Laude Society, St. Vincent de Paul Service Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Latin Honor Society.

She was recognized for achieving a perfect score on the English, Science, and Reading sections of the ACT. She had the highest grade in Modern World History, Dance II, Latin II, and AP US History. She was honored as a Father James Black Award for Excellence Finalist and as an outstanding student in several of her classes. She was also recognized on the Principal’s list.

She held leadership roles as a Sophomore Retreat Leader, Freshman Night Leader and Head of Sponsorship and Fundraising for Relay for Life.

Outside of school, Elizabeth has been involved in SEARCH, Cottage Cove, St. Thomas West Hospital, Special Olympics, Martha O’Bryan Center, babysitting, and as a swim instructor.

Elizabeth received many scholarships to various universities, but chose Clemson University where she is studying Microbiology.

Elizabeth hopes to be an oncologist, possibly a pediatric oncologist, who also does research involving cancer treatment.

Elizabeth will undoubtedly accomplish great things, and we cannot wait to see what heights she reaches.

A Letter from the Principal Dear Families and Friends,

We opened the 2019-2020 school year with a theme of GROWTH, an acronym for God, Respect, Opportunity, Wisdom, Trust, and Hope. Each day’s lessons are enveloped in the mission to develop good disciples, students of integrity who feel confident about their learning, who are respectful, kind members of the community, and who feel challenged by their work. To that end, we guide our students to grow in their love and knowledge of God and in their respect for themselves and others by living our faith and instructing them in the teachings of the Church. Through the planned social justice initiatives, teachers help students embrace opportunities to serve in our community. Thoughtful classroom dialogues enable our students to grow in wisdom, trust, and trustworthiness. Building academic success with strong foundational skills instills hope in students as they realize their unique contribution to the world and all that their future holds. Along the way, staff members model a growth mindset. Rather than, “I can’t do this,” students learn to say to themselves, “I can’t do this yet.” A small, three-letter word, yet is full of promise for students who are Always Thinking, Always Growing.

After 26 years of dedication to Christ the King School and Parish, Michael Walsh Howington ‘68, has retired from the Plant Manager position.

A fun-filled celebration was held on Saturday, June 29th in the Parish Hall.

Christ the King School wholeheartedly accepts the challenge to continually support student growth with new ideas, tools, and opportunities. Visitors to the campus this fall will notice the addition of a Stephen Benneyworth sculpture in front of the school.

Fr. Dexter commented to me that one of the purposes of art is to make one think.

Interlocking Joints, an abstract piece incorporating elements of math and science, is appropriately visible from our art and math classrooms where it can inspire student reflection. Art teacher Caitlyn Henneberry suggests, “Nonrepresentational sculpture is designed to be appreciated for its form and materiality. Our Benneyworth honors negative space and 90 degree angles, making for a beautiful addition to the front of our building. It is left unpainted so that we, the viewers, can appreciate the materials with which it was made. Benneyworth manipulates steel and concrete to create seemingly lightweight, complex joints to challenge our expectations of the materials. When you see it, ask yourself to look at it for a moment longer than you normally would.

Discover something new about it.”

Students began the year with new digital tools in the form of touchscreen panels for three classrooms, an additional Chromebook cart, and educational software subscriptions across grade levels. New media is continually being processed and added to the school library as Mrs. Wood updates our collection. New faculty assignments enable us to offer more academic support to students who need it and to bring in fresh ideas and programs. A recent donation of multiple class sets of gratitude journals from a generous parishioner reminds me that our whole school community has much for which to be grateful. My gratitude overflows for the generosity in our parish and beyond, which makes it possible to provide students with resources in abundance to keep them thinking and growing.

We opened the 2019-2020 school year with a theme of GROWTH, an acronym for God, Respect, Opportunity, Wisdom, Trust, and Hope. Each day’s lessons are enveloped in the mission to develop good disciples, students of integrity who feel confident about their learning, who are respectful, kind members of the community, and who feel challenged by their work. To that end, we guide our students to grow in their love and knowledge of God and in their respect for themselves and others by living our faith and instructing them in the teachings of the Church. Through the planned social justice initiatives, teachers help students embrace opportunities to serve in our community. Thoughtful classroom dialogues enable our students to grow in wisdom, trust, and trustworthiness. Building academic success with strong foundational skills instills hope in students as they realize their unique contribution to the world and all that their future holds. Along the way, staff members model a growth mindset. Rather than, “I can’t do this,” students learn to say to themselves, “I can’t do this yet.” A small, three-letter word, yet is full of promise for students who are Always Thinking, Always Growing.

After 26 years of dedication to Christ the King School and Parish, Michael Walsh Howington ‘68, has retired from the Plant Manager position.

A fun-filled celebration was held on Saturday, June 29th in the Parish Hall.

Christ the King School wholeheartedly accepts the challenge to continually support student growth with new ideas, tools, and opportunities. Visitors to the campus this fall will notice the addition of a Stephen Benneyworth sculpture in front of the school.

Fr. Dexter commented to me that one of the purposes of art is to make one think.

Interlocking Joints, an abstract piece incorporating elements of math and science, is appropriately visible from our art and math classrooms where it can inspire student reflection. Art teacher Caitlyn Henneberry suggests, “Nonrepresentational sculpture is designed to be appreciated for its form and materiality. Our Benneyworth honors negative space and 90 degree angles, making for a beautiful addition to the front of our building. It is left unpainted so that we, the viewers, can appreciate the materials with which it was made. Benneyworth manipulates steel and concrete to create seemingly lightweight, complex joints to challenge our expectations of the materials. When you see it, ask yourself to look at it for a moment longer than you normally would.

Discover something new about it.”

Students began the year with new digital tools in the form of touchscreen panels for three classrooms, an additional Chromebook cart, and educational software subscriptions across grade levels. New media is continually being processed and added to the school library as Mrs. Wood updates our collection. New faculty assignments enable us to offer more academic support to students who need it and to bring in fresh ideas and programs. A recent donation of multiple class sets of gratitude journals from a generous parishioner reminds me that our whole school community has much for which to be grateful. My gratitude overflows for the generosity in our parish and beyond, which makes it possible to provide students with resources in abundance to keep them thinking and growing.

Nick Lybarger ‘05 finished a PhD in Climate Dynamics in August at George Mason University. He is working for the National Center for Atmospheric Research in Boulder, CO. Nick is on board with #CKSCaresForCreation!

After excelling at Christ the King School, Elizabeth Wehby, CKS Class of 2015, graduated from Father Ryan High School as the Class Salutatorian.

While enrolled at Father Ryan, Elizabeth took 10 AP courses and held a 100.7258 cumulative weighted GPA through eight semesters. She was a member of the National Honor Society, Cardinal Newman Association, Cum Laude Society, St. Vincent de Paul Service Society, Mu Alpha Theta, and Latin Honor Society.

She was recognized for achieving a perfect score on the English, Science, and Reading sections of the ACT. She had the highest grade in Modern World History, Dance II, Latin II, and AP US History. She was honored as a Father James Black Award for Excellence Finalist and as an outstanding student in several of her classes. She was also recognized on the Principal’s list.

She held leadership roles as a Sophomore Retreat Leader, Freshman Night Leader and Head of Sponsorship and Fundraising for Relay for Life.

Outside of school, Elizabeth has been involved in SEARCH, Cottage Cove, St. Thomas West Hospital, Special Olympics, Martha O’Bryan Center, babysitting, and as a swim instructor.

Elizabeth received many scholarships to various universities, but chose Clemson University where she is studying Microbiology.

Elizabeth hopes to be an oncologist, possibly a pediatric oncologist, who also does research involving cancer treatment.

Elizabeth will undoubtedly accomplish great things, and we cannot wait to see what heights she reaches.
