2022/2023 Annual Report

With 100% of our parents, 100% of our faculty and staff, and 100% of our School Council participating, we raised over $246,000.00.

We gratefully acknowledge the donors listed who have contributed to the success of our 2022/2023 Annual Giving Campaign with gifts of prayer as well as financial support. This listing is based on contributions recorded between July 1, 2022 and June 30, 2023. Gifts received after June 30, 2023 have been applied to the 2023/2024 Gratitude Campaign and will be recognized in the 2023/2024 Gratitude Report edition of The Sceptre.

Dear Christ the King Community,

Reflecting on the last twelve months, I am continually overwhelmed by the generosity of the Christ the King parish community, our active alumni base, and our current parents. Mission-driven education has always been a hallmark of Christ the King School, rooted in the Catholic tradition of faith, academic excellence, love, and service, and our ability to deliver on this promise is made possible with the contributions of our community. The past year was full of celebrations and challenges, but this community’s resilience and unwavering support shone through it all.

Mr. Ted Sanders ‘49 presented Mr. Mila with a sizeable donation which helped to fund our new security measures.

Through careful fiscal planning and analysis of our current needs, significant strides were made to improve the school’s safety and security and continue to renovate current spaces to remain “Always Thinking, Always Growing.” The safety and security measures were spurred by the tragedy experienced by The Covenant School and guided by multiple assessments of our campus plans and infrastructure. Some of these improvements included improved exterior doors, the installation of ballistic film on all entrances, and most visibly a security agent during the school day. On the renovation side, the Science Classroom was fully renovated to improve the functionality of the classroom and allow all students, regardless of grade, to learn science more deeply in a modern science facility through authentic learning experiences in science. None of these changes would have been possible without the support, dedication, and generosity of our parents, alumni, friends, and parishioners. Your steadfast support of Christ the King School remaining on mission allows us to move forward, empowering us to provide an exceptional education.

As we look ahead to next year and beyond, I am inspired by the collective strength of this school community and our focus on the mission and shared values that bind us together. We pray the next twelve months allow us to continue saying “yes” to ideas that will improve the student experience here at Christ the King School. Please enjoy this edition of The Sceptre as we highlight the last year and thank everyone who contributed to the Annual Giving Fund.

The Teacher Award of Excellence is an award donated by Mary Fran Hazinski-Davis, voted on by faculty of Christ the King School. The teacher chosen exemplifies Christian values, is dedicated to students, has compassion for all, has a creative approach in addressing a variety of learning styles, and has loyalty to school.

Mrs. Teresa Davis, Library Media Specialist, is the 2023 Recipient of this award.

The Pat Holzapfel Strobel ‘56 Legacy Grant was established in 2021 in memory of Pat and recognizes a graduating family who has been an ardent and longtime supporter of CKS, made sacrifices to send their children to CKS; a family that has silently contributed to every fundraiser, quietly volunteered when needed, and loudly cheered for the Raiders—win, lose or draw. Phyllis (Donald) Rowan certainly fit this description after 57 consecutive years as a parent and grandparent. Many of Phyllis’ children and grandchildren were on hand to witness her receive the grant, with Erin Shay Jordan ‘23, the last of the grands, presented by Catherine Bohren, one of Pat’s grandchildren.

Chandler Harris ‘02

Chandler was inducted into the 2023 Middle School Forensics Hall of Fame. He graduated from Father Ryan High School, earned a law degree from the University of Memphis, spent six years as an Assistant District Attorney in Davidson County, was a partner at the prestigious Philadelphia law firm of Miller/Moughlin, and is now a partner at Mullen Coughlin, LLC in Philadephia.

“The forensics program taught me that while communication skills require keen speaking abilities, it also means being a good listener. As an attorney, both skills are necessary for success,” Harris said. “Forensics helped prepare me to be a persuasive speaker, capable of formulating my thoughts quickly and thoroughly. It’s helped make me the attorney I am today. I cherish the four years I spent in forensics.” - Excerpt:Tennessee Register.

Shellie Fajardo Richards ‘81

Shellie is the Director of Undergraduate Studies, and Research Assistant Professor of Communication of Science and Technology at Vanderbilt College of Arts & Science. She is also an author, whose book November Molecule, won two awards at the 2023 Bookfest - 1st Place Award: Fiction > Thriller - Medical; 2nd Place Award: Fiction > Thriller > Military. Kyle Burnett ‘09 married Adriana Garcia on February 4, 2023 at The Basilica of St. Mary Star of the Sea in Key West, FL. He and his wife are both physical therapists in Miami.

They reside in Houston, TX where Paige is a reading interventionist at charter school, Baker Riley, and Denis is a grants administrator for the University of Texas Medical Center at Galveston. Jordan McLaughlin ‘03 is a manager at TuTu’s, a dancers boutique, and is a dance teacher/choreographer for Revolution Dance Studio, both in Knoxville. Jack McLaughlin ‘14 is in law school at University of Dayton, and made the Law Review last year. He will be serving as Associate Editor on the Law Review Board.

Elizabeth works with children with autism, and since the passing of her brother Patrick Otto ‘09, has become very involved in suicide prevention, as the walk co-chair for the American Foundation of Suicide Prevention Tennessee chapter.
