A MESSAGE FROM MRS. WOODMAN Dear Families and Friends,
Our recent celebration of Catholic Schools Week provided an opportunity to highlight the reasons for choosing a Catholic school. What makes Christ the King stand out in a stellar crowd? The telling of our school story is best done by the students themselves. Below are some excerpts from student reflective writing this year. One girl wrote that the counselor showed her to “always be kind and you should never stay mad at little things.” An eighth grader related her new understanding of the Old Testament through audiovisuals that illustrated what the Israelites, Moses, and Abraham went through. “It has opened my eyes to not just reading the Bible, but seeing it.” She also praised the personal prayer time in religion class when they have structured prayer while listening to calming music. Staying true to our mission of educating students in the Catholic tradition is foremost in our school day. A middle school student wrote of her math teacher who showed her how to draw and label a diagram to solve a challenging problem. An algebra student said class time “goes by very, very quickly” and he learns math better because his teacher uses multiple different ways to teach one lesson. A sixth grade student related his experience as a participant in Catholic Math League, during which he learns something new at every session. Sharpening academic skills, learning to think outside the box, and using various technological tools responsibly to do research, create products, or indicate understanding prepares our students for higher learning and for life. One of our eighth grade boys expressed his appreciation of “real art” and the chance to create religious visual art such as printmaking of crosses. Visual and performing arts are taught by instructors who are specialists in their fields, offering our students a glimpse of what opportunities lie ahead for them in high school and beyond. Students can develop their skills and have opportunities to perform on stage in musical and dramatic productions. One of the finest aspects of CKS is the collaboration of teachers, learning specialists, and the counselor to meet students where they are developmentally and academically, supporting the learning needs of individuals, whether a child is advanced, on grade level, or struggling to succeed. An older student with a support plan praised the learning specialist who helped her with her dyslexia, saying, “...ever since I started going to her I can read better. She is one of the best teachers I have ever had.” Christ the King has cause to rejoice in our accomplishments, our students, and the supportive environment of our school and parish community. MEMORIES FROM SISTER LAUREN
Sister Mary Lauren Cole, RSM was honored as our 2017 Distinguished Graduate after the Mass on Tuesday, January 31, 2017 of Catholic Schools Week. Sister Lauren shared some treasured memorabilia with CKS, both from when she was a student and as teacher (1978-1983). Photos from her classes have handwritten names under their photos, and she had stories to tell about each student. If you were ever a student or a classmate of Sister Lauren’s, she remembers you!

Lisa Spencer, WSMV Weather, came to talk to 3rd and 4th grade and demonstrated a homemade tornado with assistance from Mya Emmanuel.

DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE 2017 SISTER MARY LAUREN COLE: Mass during Catholic Schools Week was ended with recognition of Sister Mary Lauren Cole, CKS Class of 1958. Sister Lauren shared some memories from her days at CKS as a student, and also as a teacher. We also honored the Sisters of Mercy with a gift in honor of their 150th Anniversary. We are blessed to have a strong connection with the Sisters of Mercy, who helped establish Christ the King School in 1937. CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK
CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: It was a fun-filled week. We are BLESSED by our Parish whom we celebrated on Sunday; Monday - We celebrated our Community with collections for Book ‘Em, our 7th & 8th grade volunteered one day at Second Harvest last week; Tuesday - We recognized our 2017 Distinguished Graduate, Sister Lauren Cole, with a beautiful school Mass, and made cards for Bishop Choby and the Sisters of Mercy; Wednesday - Teacher Appreciation; Thursday Parent Appreciation - No homework and kids in PJs; the 8th grade vs FacultyRivalry Basketball Game (officiated by special refs/students: (Alex Otto with referee Chuck Curran); Friday - Student Appreciation - teachers in uniform, a magic show (PK-4) and Hungry Hippo (5-8), ending the week with Benediction and Throat Blessings.
