A MESSAGE FROM MRS. WOODMAN Dear Families and Friends,

Christ the King School’s 2016 Distinguished Graduate Award honored parishioner Hugh Breen ‘43 during Catholic Schools Week for his lifelong devotion to the parish and school community. Last fall, while conversing with Mr. Breen, I was charmed by his memories of growing up in the 1930’s when he was a student here. The buildings and faces were different, but his descriptions of the love and support his family experienced through the years remains the same. One of my favorite stories was hearing him tell about the carnival at that time and how the moms and dads all helped out to make it special for the children, just like today. Unlike today, he remembers being able to get a lamb cake at the cake booth for only ten cents! Mr. Breen and his wife, Mary, have stayed active at Christ the King in various parish ministries while raising their family and on into their retirement years. They espouse the idea of giving back for the blessings that their family has received, and they expressed their devotion to Catholic education.

Reflecting on these sentiments, I wonder who in the school today will be that graduate who remains devoted to CKS in 2090? Might it be the Pre-K student who hugs me in the hallway? It could be the middle school student who prays for each teacher during Lent. Perhaps it will be the youngster who won the science fair last year or made the winning basket in last week’s basketball game. It could just as easily be a student who struggles to read or is shy when called upon. Today’s students are our future, both in our faith community and in the broader society. We build on students’ strengths each day so that they can become the leaders of tomorrow. Colleen, one of my third graders, suggested a new school slogan to me this year.

What wisdom from one so young! We spend each school day going about the daily business of work and play, but over time something quite valuable emerges. The faith that strengthens and sustains us throughout our lives blossoms in each individual student who seeks Christ in our classrooms. It blossomed in the heart of Hugh Breen, Class of 1943, and countless students who have followed his footsteps. Congratulations, Mr. Breen!

Christ the King has a new addition to its staff for 2016. Please join me in welcoming our new Director of Development, Mrs. Anna Beth Godfrey. We feel fortunate to have her on board!

HUGH MICHAEL BREEN CLASS OF 1943

CKS DISTINGUISHED GRADUATE

Mr. Hugh Breen, who we featured in the Gratitude Report last fall, was honored as our 2016 Distinguished Graduate after the Mass on Tuesday, February 2, 2016 of Catholic Schools Week.

Mr. Breen was awarded a pin and framed certificate from the NCEA for this honor. A reception following Mass welcomed family and friends to gather and congratulate Mr. Breen on his accomplishment.

CKS HAPPENINGS

Mrs. Woodman opened the “Holy Door” at CKS for the students after Mass on the Feast of the Immaculate Conception.

Pat Watson, from The Knights of Columbus CTK Council #12256 presented us with an all-weather flag after the permanent lighting was installed under the flagpole in front of the school.

Kindergarten had their own “baptism” with the help of Deacon Andy McKenzie, to learn more about the sacrament.

Fourth grade teacher, Miss Meghan Clarke, became Mrs. Meghan Nicholson on February 6th. Congrats! (above, dressed in a girl scout uniform for student appreciation day)

Crawford Hicks, great-grandfather of students Sarah Jane and Tommy Rodgers, is a WWII vet, and he came to present some stories about his experience to some of the classes.

The student body collected saltines for the Ladies of Charity gift baskets before Christmas.

The Student Council counted them up before sending them off.

Charlie Strobel came and talked to the 2nd graders about the Room In The Inn program.

GOOD NEWS: ALUMNI

We always enjoy seeing our alumni when they come to work at CKS in their Senior Service from Father Ryan High School. At left, Eamonn Donnelly CKS ‘12 and Jenny Morgan CKS ‘12, are pictured with another FRHS senior service student, Jake Wilson, trying out the “Minute to Win It” game for the PreK students. In case you wondered, Jenny Morgan came in first!

In August 2005, Christ the King School hosted seven students displaced by Hurricane Katrina.

Even though their stay was short at CKS, they are remembered fondly as a part of the classes in which they became a member.

can High School in the spring semester. She was involved in the Dominican High School Band as well as the Jazz Band, orchestra and Tri-M Music Honor Society. She continued participation in the Rummel High School drama club as a member of the technical staff.

An active CYO member, she was president of St. Benilde’s CYO, attended the March for Life in Washington, DC, and attended a Steubenville Conference. In 2010 she received the St. Timothy Award for outstanding Catholic leadership from the Archdiocese of New Orleans.

Madelyn majored in Biology at LSU graduating in 2014. She is currently teaching Biology and Chemistry at St. Mary’s Dominican High School and is completing a Master’s Degree in Science Teaching from the University of New Orleans. Madelyn is a big fan of the LSU Tigers and New Orleans Saints. She is engaged to Ryan Maldonado.

Orleans summer school program in Innsbruck, Austria with her cousin, Claire, and visited several European cities. She is a Chemical Engineering Major at LSU.

Lauren Westholz returned to 6th grade at St. Benilde. She participated in service clubs, the drama club and all of the girls sports teams.

She was involved in CYO and also received the St. Timothy Award. At St. Mary’s Dominican High School, she was a member of the band, Jazz band and Tri-M Honor Society. Jordan Dahlhauser was in 4th grade at the time of Katrina. He is currently 19 years old, attending Tulane University and pursuing his interests in digital media. Jordan is the nephew of Paul and Glenda Sexton Dahlhauser ‘81.

Claire Plauche was in 7th grade for Hurricane Katrina. She returned home and continued to attend the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans. She graduated from Sacred Heart in 2011 and enrolled in the University of Louisiana, Layfayette as an Art Education major.

Claire studied abroad at the University of Innsbruck. She is employed by Painting With a Twist Studios. Claire was a student-teacher last fall semester and received her Bachelor’s degree in December 2015, and started teaching art at the Carencro High School in January 2016.

Julia Plauche was in 2nd grade during Hurricane Katrina. She returned to the Academy of the Sacred Heart in New Orleans and will graduate in May 2016. Christ the King and Sacred Heart are the only schools Julia has attended. Julia plans to attend Louisiana State University in the fall of 2016, possibly majoring in Psychology.

Kyle Westholz was in 2nd grade at the time of Katrina. He returned to St. Benilde through 4th grade. He attended Christian Brothers School for middle school. While there he was on the football and lacrosse teams and discovered kayaking. He has been a CYO member and played travel lacrosse. Currently Kyle is a senior at Jesuit High School. He is an honor roll student, participates in the Urban Farming Club and Spirit Club and is an intramural referee. Kyle is a midfielder on the state champion Lacrosse team. A member of the Krewe of Thoth, Kyle rode in his first Mardi Gras parade in 2014. Kayak fishing is one of his favorite activities. Kyle was recently accepted to LSU.

We were unable to locate Mac Taylor who was in 6th grade at the time, but it is our hope that he is doing well.

STUDENT NEWS

CATHOLIC SCHOOLS WEEK: It was a fun-filled week. We celebrated our Parish with special THANKS and treats on Sunday; Monday - In honor of our Nation with a special flag ceremony led by our boy scouts and service projects to include collections for Room In The Inn and Second Harvest Food Bank; Tuesday - a beautiful school Mass and the recognition of our 2016 Distinguished Graduate; 6th-8th grade trip to Second Harvest to deliver donations and work; and an afternoon presentation by 6th grade teacher, Mr. Kenneth Stephens about his trip to Haiti; Wednesday - Teacher Appreciation; Thursday - Parent Appreciation with a to-go breakfast for parents; kids in PJs and no homework; and Friday - Student Appreciation which included 8th grade vs Faculty Rivalry Basketball Game (officiated by special refs/students: Jack Rohling and Kendall St. Charles), and teachers in uniform and some Skyping sessions with other schools around the U.S.

Once again, Nashville got enough snow to close school for a few days this winter, though it was very beautiful.
