EIGHTH GRADE AWARDS 2015

Dear Families and Friends, Christ the King “Blasted Off to New Heights” during the 2014-2015 school year in many areas. While this was the theme for our Annual Giving Campaign last year, it resonated in the achievement of our students, the creativity of our teachers, and the involvement of our parents and community.

If I had to choose one word to describe CKS students, it would be “motivated.” They are motivated to learn and excel in the classroom and outside of it. Our students have met school improvement goals for improving their writing and mathematical thinking this past year. They also eagerly learned to care about the lives and needs of others through active involvement in projects for Strick’s Gift, Room in the Inn, Walk to Cure Arthritis, JDRF Walk, Second Harvest Food Bank, Ladies of Charity gift baskets, and correspondence with parish shut-ins. New afterschool programs in technology and engineering have drawn participants from multiple grade levels whose curiosity compels them to explore these areas.

Faculty members capitalized on students’ affinity for technology by trying out new programs and apps in their lesson plans. Some of the favorites have been Socrative and Kahoot, which are fun, interactive, on the spot assessments. Others include Letter School, Google Classroom, and Google Voice. Staying on the leading edge of innovation is both a challenge and an adventure for our dedicated teachers, who are lifelong learners themselves.

Reaching these new heights is possible with the assistance of our parents and community friends, who support the school with their time, talent, and treasure. We reached 89% parent participation in the Annual Fund for 2014-2015, which soars above recent years. We have amazing parents at CKS! This past year we launched the first Dexter Dash to augment our Annual Giving Fund. Father Dexter invited us to be part of the excitement of his running world and in the process brought in additional resources for the school. I am grateful to Fr. D and to all of our parish, who continually show their pride in the school through goodwill, service, and financial support.

Through the generous spirit of CKS supporters we truly have blasted off! The Annual Giving Fund exceeded $123,000, enabling us to continue living out our vision of sharing knowledge of God’s world, establishing a strong foundation for academic excellence, and instilling the spirit of service in a Christ-centered life.

Additionally, our fundraising events successfully raised funds and fun in abundance. We are truly blessed.

7th/8th Grade Cross Country team celebrated 3rd place (girls) and 4th place (boys).

With about 89.3% of our parents participating and 100% of our faculty and staff contributing, we met 154% of our goal of $80,000.00 for a total of $123,560.

The Sceptre A Visit with Mr. Hugh Breen, Class of 1943

Mr. Hugh Breen, and his wife Mary, are well known parishioners of Christ the King, but Hugh is also a 1943 alumnus of Christ the King School. Hugh started in 5th grade at CKS along with his siblings in the Noel House, after the parish and school opened in 1937. He had previously been at the Cathedral School before CTK began. Hugh and Mary were married in 1955, and they have children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. One of their great-granddaughters, Taylor Thurman, graduated in 2015 from CKS. Hugh and Mary came to visit and talk about Hugh’s days at CKS, and Catholic education with Jeanette Neuhoff Vogt, Kate Evertsen, and Sherry Woodman.

Did you have a favorite teacher, coach, priest?

“Fr. Leppert was wonderful.

He played sports with the students and was a coach.

He also had a strong devotion to the Blessed Mother, which he instilled in me as a student.”

What grade did you start in at CKS? “I started at Christ the King in the 5th grade.

There were about 80 families at Christ the King and 60 students. We had class in the original two-story house which served as the church, the priest’s house and the school. The first floor was where we had class. The second floor was the priest’s room. We loved school and raced to finish our work.”

What do you remember about your childhood?

“It was a different generation. Our family got by on not much money, but we were blessed.”

What did you do for fun as a child ?

“We played in the woods, and we had a basketball court at school. I remember three caboose cars which were in the woods and we had a great time playing on those cars. We didn’t have TV, and we didn’t travel all over the city like kids do today. Today’s technology is amazing for students, and allows them to see things that are going on all over the world.

Along with technology also comes responsibility - kids need to remember to look at each other and their family members, and not just at the phone or computer screen.”

What do you remember most about CKS? “The nuns were very dedicated. We were blessed with a wonderful community that was so helpful to everyone. If anyone had any needs, the community was always there to help out. I remember the church carnivals as a child. I remember they took the doors off of the rectory for the carnival. I also remember that when I graduated, there were fourteen students in my class, four girls and ten boys.

There was no tuition back then. There was one coach for football, baseball and basketball, and the nuns were the teachers.”

Researching the records revealed the following students were in the 1943 graduating class: Joseph L. Can you share your family life with us?

“On August 27, 2015, my wife Mary Chamberlain Breen and I celebrated our 60th wedding anniversary.

I met Mary at a Senior CYO Convention in Memphis. She was from Chattanooga. I had seen her a year before at a convention in Gatlinburg. I started a conversation with her by asking, ‘Haven’t I met you before?’ And that’s how I started talking to her. We had ended up with a group of people in a little room with a ‘monkey heater’ where we went to get warm as it was very cold outside.”

Hugh and Mary were married in Chattanooga at Our Lady of Perpetual Help. They hadn’t figured out where they were going to live yet, but while they were on their honeymoon, Mary was offered a job teaching at Christ the King School (for $150 a month), which allowed them to rent their first apartment (for $57.50).

Hugh went to electrical school. (Mary shared a bit of marital advice with us – “There will be ups and downs. Always say you’re sorry at night. If it’s not solved before you go to bed, it won’t be easily solved. But always say you’re sorry before you go to bed.”) Mary taught at Christ the King until she became pregnant with their first daughter. They have three daughters – Marianna, Michelle and Karen.

She stayed home with them until she came to teach again at CKS in the late 70’s for a couple of years. They have one grandchild and two great-grandchildren.

There are a lot of clergy in both Mary and Hugh’s families. Hugh is from a family of nine children, six boys and three girls: Paul, Ann, Bill, Mary Jo, (Hugh), Dot, Tom, and the last two Fr. Joe Pat, and Fr. Philip. Mary’s uncle was Monsignor Leo Siener. Mary taught 1st and 2nd grade at Christ the King. She loved teaching kids to read and training them to receive the Eucharist. Mary also worked at the Catholic Center as an audio-visual librarian, researching and sending out needed videos to parochial schools (before technology today), and she has tutored students at home.

Can you tell us a little about your professional life?

“I was a union electrician for 38 years and have been retired for 23 years. I worked for Wolfe & Travis Electric, Edenfield Electric, Inc. and retired from Travis Electric Co.

How do you feel about Catholic education?

“It is not easy to be a Christian in today’s world. People are blessed to be able to live their faith, to be able to pray in school. Education is the best investment we can make.

‘Ignorance breeds poverty, and poverty breeds crime.’ School teachers sacrifice to teach in a Catholic school. We are blessed with dedicated teachers who are willing to make that sacrifice, as they could earn more teaching in a public school.”

How did attending Catholic school influence your decisions throughout your life?

“I was blessed with beginning my spiritual journey at Christ the King. Christ the King is my community, and my family.”

Are you still connected to Christ the King today?

“Some take it for granted, but I feel very blessed to be a part of this community still today. I love seeing the students on the altar (celebrating the Eucharist with Fr. Two boys from Christ the King’s 2nd grade class, Matthew Smith and Hudson Thienel, made an Apostolate to Hugh and wrote to him all year last year. He enjoyed it very much and looked forward to their letters, especially when he was not feeling well.

If you could give kids today a piece of advice, what would it be?

“Do your best. Living life is about how you touch people and how you carry your cross.”

If you could give parents today a piece of advice, what would it be?

“More people should invest in Catholic education. Make an effort to say thank you and give praise to teachers for a job well done. People are quick to criticize, but often don’t give thanks or praise when things are going well.

We should pray every day and not be afraid to pray in public, and speak up for the rights of all people. Make an effort and God will do the rest.”

Rose Joyce ‘02 (top right) married Thomas Keeling on May 23, 2015 at Cathedral. Tom is doing a fellowship in pediatric dentistry. Rose and Tom met in dental school. Rose finished her residency in general dentristy and is currently seeking employment in New York. They plan to move to Nashville in 2016 when Tom finishes his fellowship.
