EIGHTH GRADE AWARDS 2016

Dear Families and Friends, The 2015-2016 school year brought some welcome affirmation of our mission and the core values of Catholic education. The successful AdvancEd accreditation review visit in November shined a light on the academic excellence and support of all learners in our school. In addition to students’ spiritual growth and faith experiences, each day provides cognitive, physical, emotional, and social growth as well. Christ the King has been producing well-rounded and well-grounded youth for close to eight decades.

This past year we turned our attention to how we will continue to provide these same advantages for future generations of CTK parishioners. After months of research and planning with School Board members, I am pleased and grateful to announce the establishment of the Forever Fund, an endowment for the school. Currently funded at approximately $278,230, the fund is based on a foundation of bequests to the school and a leadership gift from the Women’s Council. It is my hope that it will continue to grow as community members learn more about how planned giving can benefit the school, both now and in the future.

The Crown Affair event and Annual Giving from the past year by far exceeded our budgeted expectations with record net revenue from each. The dinner and auction last March had net proceeds of $49,884, with about $5,000 of that going toward new library books. Annual Fund contributions totaled $140,219, allowing us to set aside funds for technology and library updates, and updated security for the school. The generosity of our community always amazes and gratifies me.

During this school year we are exploring the theme Light the Way in all classes. When we seek to answer who lights the way for us, the multitude of benefactors who care for our school come to mind. Thank you for the beneficence which enables the students to be a light to others as they grow and learn in Christ.

Memories from Margorie Davis same. Young parents today (former parent, current grandparent)

“The more things change, the more they stay the same.”

No one can dispute that the school campus that Bob and Margie Davis’ children attended from the 60’s through the 80’s looks somewhat different than it does today. Mr. and Mrs. Davis had six children - Tucker Davis ‘71, Marjorie “Sissy” Davis Murphy ‘72, Lucy Davis Blair ‘74, Paul Davis ‘77, Rick Davis, and Christy Davis Cullison ‘86. They are grandparents to Josh Murphy ‘92, Jennifer Murphy ‘95, Justin Murphy ‘02, Julie Murphy ‘04, Philip Davis ‘04, Kevin Davis ‘05, Rachel Cullison ‘15, and Brooke Cullison ‘17, and their daughter Lucy has a greatniece, Lucy Anton, CKS Class of 2026!

In a recent conversation with Mrs. Davis, she recalled being on the school board, to the best of her best recollection beginning about 1979. She served with fellow Christ the King parents and parishioners - Mrs. Jean Berry, Mrs. Margie Francescon, Mr. Bill Farmer, Mr. Gerard Killmeyer, Mrs. Ladelle Scruggs, and Mr. Al Valiquette.

Monsignor Dan Richardson was the pastor, and Sr. Ann Francis, and then Mr. Tony Springman were the school principals. The concerns of the school board back then, are similar to those the board strategizes about now - enrollment, tuition, fundraising, teacher salaries, and campus maintenance. She remembers they brainstormed about initiatives that would boost enrollment, and one of those things that came out of their brainstorming was the Before and Aftercare Program, allowing working parents more flexibility.

Mrs. Davis remembers tirelessly working alongside the other parents and parishioners because they were determined to keep enrollment up and wanted to make sure CKS would not close due to low numbers. She emphasized several times how thankful she was that her children and grandchildren attended Christ the King because of the wonderful education they received, the friends that she and her husband and their children made, many of whom have been lifelong friends ever since.

Although the campus has changed, the sense of community, love and dedication to Christ the King has remained the

are forming lifelong friendships, as are their children.

Parents continue to be crucial to the life of our school, whether it is serving on a board, volunteering in the classroom, returning as grandparents, or spreading the good news about Christ the King School at Open Houses. There’s something special about this place.
