EIGHTH GRADE AWARDS 2017
Dear Families and Friends, Christ the King School celebrated its 80th year of educating the youth of our parish on September 26, the date that school doors opened for the first day in 1937. The chalkboards and filmstrip projectors have been replaced by interactive whiteboards and iPads. The library’s card catalog is now online and students use “interactive textbooks” to learn in new, creative ways. We have more extracurricular options such as chess, forensics, drama, makerspace, and an abundance of sports. Teachers have more demanding certification requirements and have access to ongoing professional development. While our instruction, building, and uniforms have changed, the mission of providing an education grounded in the traditions of our faith has remained steady. The school theme this year is All Are Welcome. Just as in Jesus’ day, the theme of hospitality is essential in maintaining a faith-filled learning community. We live out this virtue daily in our communal prayer, procedures that encourage children to be congenial, support for individual student needs, parent outreach, and social justice projects, to name a few. Christ asks us to love our neighbor and to serve others. This sense of service is evident in our faculty and staff as well. A teacher gives up part of her lunch for a student who forgot a snack. Another comes in early to help a struggling student write a paper. The plant manager climbs to the roof to retrieve lost soccer balls. Office staff comfort a student who is injured or whose parent is late picking up. This place where all are welcome and all are valued is a home away from home for many of us, as described by retired CKS principal Alice Valiquette. She recently visited the eighth grade to speak about the 80th anniversary and her experience as a parent, teacher, and principal. Mrs. Valiquette shared memories and funny stories, but she said what stood out most for her was the love. The most important things have not changed in eighty years. The love among staff, students, families, and parish remains strong. Thank you to all who are a part of our mission to pass on our faith and to teach of the love that Christ shares with us and through us.
