The Sceptre A Letter from the Principal Dear Families and Friends of CKS, Reaching the end of my first year as principal of Christ the King and preparing for a new year is a milestone that I couldn’t imagine one year ago today. As I take time to reflect on the past months, I see how our community has grown and changed. The youngest Raiders in our PreK and Kindergarten classes absorbed the school culture with the help of their older “buddies” and are ready to advance to the next level of learning. Our 2013 class of eighth graders achieved the high expectations set for them and graduated into the ranks of our alumni. We wish them well and hope to maintain their close ties with our community as they progress through high school, college, and adulthood. I expect the momentum in our community to continue as we progress through the 2013-2014 school year. The faculty, School Board, National Junior Honor Society, Student Council, and Fr. Dexter have all collaborated in crafting a vision statement and revising our school mission and beliefs to reflect the spirituality, compassion, knowledge, and sense of community imparted to our students. This is the guiding beacon for our daily work and for the decisions made on behalf of the children. Students will experience newly installed technology and new instructional strategies to enhance their learning. The faculty has participated in an amazing array of professional development opportunities this past summer and the technology committee, under Mr. Boehm’s guidance, has led the selection of new learning tools to give impetus to our living the mission this school year. Each year for the past twenty years I have observed with wonder as a new batch of eighth graders grow into the role of school leaders. I have faith that this year’s group will shine, too. We welcome fifteen new transfer students, along with new PreK and K students, who will be assimilated into their classes to form cohesive groups. Our faculty grows by one as Mrs. Wellborn enters a new role of creating an extracurricular drama department and literature circles, while Mr. Kenneth Stephens brings his congeniality, fresh ideas, and good humor to the sixth grade classroom. It is our alumni, parishioners, parents, and friends who enable our vision and mission to become reality for the students of CKS through their generosity. The programs, personnel, facilities, and resources strengthen and grow through the support of our community. Someone asked me last fall how many children I have and without thinking I replied, “262.” After clarifying that the inquiry was about biological children, I amended, “Well...one, so that makes 263!” The children of Christ the King are “my children” and you, who make up the community that supports their growth and learning, are our extended family. I thank you all with my whole heart for being part of the family that makes possibilities come true for our students. Sincerely, Mrs. Sherry Woodman ON THE COVER: Kindergartener, Jack Halloran, was excited and surprised when he was chosen as the recipient of the Alice Valiquette Citizenship Award in May at the End of the Year Awards. Also pictured, two of the class winners: Ellie Schulz - PreK and Abbey Hicks - 1st grade.

JAMES W. “SHORTY” CARELL ‘50 Right before publication, we lost alumnus, friend and benefactor, Mr. Jim Carell. A Visit with Mr. Joseph Maddux, CKS Class of 1939 Joseph Maddux, CKS Class of 1939. Known as “Pop and “Old Pop” by his 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren
but to those of us at CKS, Mr. Maddux has the most distinguished title of 1939 alumnus, from our illustrious inaugural graduating class. In 1937, Mr. Maddux came to CKS from Cathedral School along with his two brothers, Orville “Buddy” ‘45 and Paul ‘52, and sister, Elizabeth “Betty” (Holt) ‘42. Mr. Maddux completed seventh and eighth grade in the Noel House at CTK, went on to graduate from Father Ryan High School in 1943, and Vanderbilt University in 1950. Mr. Maddux served our country as a B-25 pilot for the U.S. Army Air Force after passing the Air Force Cadet Program in 1945 when he received his wings and commission. In June of 1949 he married his college sweetheart, Miss Anne Cunningham, a Peabody School graduate and teacher. Joseph and Miss Anne have five children. He is the founder of Maddux and Company, a manufacturer’s representative agency, as well as Crawford Door Sales of Nashvile. Mr. Maddux, who credits his strong religious foundation to his early education in Nashville parochial schools, recently met with Michelle Barber and Jeanette Neuhoff Vogt to reminisce a bit about his days at CKS. What were the circumstances that brought you to CKS as a 7th grade student? My siblings and I attended Cathedral School and church until the CTK property was acquired. My family lived on Castleman Drive near the intersection of Hobbs Road and Hillsboro Road. Therefore, we lived in the area designated for the CTK parish. In 1937 we made the move to CKS which was temporarily housed in the Noel House.
Bishop Adrian, Wm. Breen, R.G. Warner, Jr., William Ballinger, Tommy Howington, Jack FarringerScoutmaster, Earl Broden, Whit Terrell - Ad Altare Dei medalists (from a souvenir program from the dedication of the “new building” in 1946). They were some of the original members of Troop 11.
Note: According to our records and the recollections of Mr. Maddux, the following were in the CKS Class of 1939: Mary Alerdice, Bill Ballinger, Bill Bolster, Bill Breen, Ellen Daugherty, Phil Hostettler, Tommy Howington (our own Mike Howington’s father), Joan St. Pe, Andrew Vaughn, and Roland Wolfe.
The Sceptre What was it like attending school in the Noel House? There was not an 8th grade the first year. Classes took place in various rooms of the home which was original to the property. We were accustomed to separate recess at Cathedral since the boys and girls had different designated playgrounds. At CKS, we shared a playground but it seems to me we segregated ourselves because the girls were not interested in our pick-up games. We did not have formal sports teams but we enjoyed organizing ourselves into teams for football or kickball or other games at recess and on weekends. You have seen much change in this area of town since 1937 - do you have any specific memories of the area? My childhood home was on Castleman Drive. I remember we had chickens on our property. My siblings and I would collect the eggs and we all knew how to skin and ready a chicken for dinner. There wasn’t much in the way of buildings or homes between my family’s home and CKS. Although I did not walk to school, I could have and might have seen just a few cars pass me along the way...a lot different than the traffic jams one may encounter along Hillsboro Road today! Was there a special teacher, sister or priest that you recall? Sister Sebastian was both our teacher and served as the principal. I remember one occasion Sister fussed at me and said, “Joe Maddux, you will never amount to anything!” Many years later, and much to my surprise, I ran into Sister while making a sales call in Knoxville at St. Mary’s Hospital. We had a nice visit but that was the last time I ever saw her. Father Leppert was assigned to open CTK. He was a wonderful man and seemed to really enjoy the children. He would come to recess and play ball games with us boys. You toured the building - did it bring back any old memories? It was very different back then. My class was fairly small, all boys and one girl. All of my classmates were very friendly. We were a very close group and remained close at Father Ryan as well. Then we scattered as we married and moved about the country, but many of my classmate’s families still have Nashville and CTK ties. Many of their children and grandchildren attend Mass and school at Christ the King. As you move through life, you meet new friends; but, I
have always felt a close connection to my CKS classmates. Were you involved in any co-curricular activities? I was one of the original members of Scout Troop 11 which is still functioning at CTK today. We went on a lot of campouts at Percy Warner Park. Father Leppert would often attend, always on Friday nights so he could get back in town for Saturday evening Mass. We did not have organized sports, electronics, cars nor much in the way of entertainment but we did a lot of visiting back then. We lived close by and would spend time at one another’s homes. I remember many fun times at the Dortches and the Howingtons. In 1939, we were on the brink of involvement in WWII, Gone with the Wind won the Motion Picture of the Year, Campbell’s Soup was a popular product...What other memories do you have of pop culture and world events? I remember that everything was rationed due to the war efforts. Even groceries were often hard to get. At my childhood home, we maintained a very extensive vegetable and fruit garden out of necessity. Gas was rationed, so everyone limited the use of their automobiles. Do you recall any pranks or funny moments? Well, there used to be streetcars in Nashville. One line came down Belmont at Gale Lane. In order to turn the streetcar around, to go in the opposite direction, a trolley would come, tie off the streetcar, connect electricity and reverse the direction of the streetcar on the tracks. We thought it was funny to play a trick on the conductor. When the trolley conductor would be getting back into the trolley after all his efforts, we would pull the streetcar off the tracks as a prank. Most folks today probably don’t know about streetcars. We went about town on trolleys since people did not have cars like they do today. We had one family car, a 1943 Chevrolet. I never had my own car until I married and had a job. After CKS, where did life take you academically and professionally?
I graduated from CKS in 1939 and then on to Father Ryan (Class of 1943) with only 43 boys in my class. I was 18 when I graduated high school and I entered the Air Force Cadet Program. In 1945 I earned my wings and became a commissioned pilot in the U.S. Army Air Force. I flew B-25’s, the same type of plane that bombed Tokyo in WWII. I got out in 1946 because they had an overage of pilots at the time. Then in September of 1946, thanks to the G.I. Bill, I started Vanderbilt and was a member of The Kappa Sigma fraternity. I graduated Vanderbilt in 1950 and immediately went to work at Robert Orr Wholesale Grocery. Two years later I became part owner of Builder’s Specialty. In 1969, I opened Maddux & Co. as well as Crawford Door Sales which specialized in industrial and commercial garage doors and operable walls. Although I maintain an office at Crawford Door Sales, it is now operated by my son, John. Most of our employees have been there for 35+ years. We recently installed a mile of operable wall in the new Music City Convention Center. This is by far one of our largest projects to date and the new convention center is certainly one of the biggest additions to Nashville in my lifetime. How did you meet your wife? At Vanderbilt, I was a member of the Kappa Sigma fraternity. One evening a fraternity brother brought his date back to the house and she caught my eye. Shortly thereafter I called Miss Anne Cunningham for a date and we were married in June of 1949. She attended Peabody and became a teacher before we started our family. We have been blessed with five children - Margaret Anne “Peggy,” Mary Beth, Sara Lee, Joe Jr., and John W. Our family of seven has expanded over the years to include 13 grandchildren and 19 great-grandchildren. (continued on next page)

The Sceptre As a parent, grandparent, and greatgrandparent, do you have advice for us parents? The best influence that parents can have on their children is to stay married and to be good examples for their children. How did your Catholic School experience mold you? I wish everyone could be exposed to and experience a Catholic school education. At CKS, I was in a very disciplined environment. Discipline is one of the best teachers. How did it influence your decisions throughout your life? My Catholic upbringing, my time at Cathedral School, CKS, and Father Ryan all worked to form me and my core values. Even though I cannot point out a specific moment or challenge where I turned to my faith for strength, I know I have always carried my faith as part of my daily life and experiences. My Catholic faith has had a great influence on me throughout my entire life. As a CKS alum, what advice can you offer to our current students? Work hard, lead a good Christian life, perservere, and keep your faith.

Class of 1963 - 50 Year Class Reunion “Imagine walking into a place and immediately being transformed into a young girl playing kick the can in Louise Sullivan’s front yard on Dallas Avenue - the night was that kind of magical.” - a quote from Sheryl Vanderpool Wright. Another classmate named Tommy Ascik, only lived in Nashville for 5 years and graduated from Notre Dame in Chattanooga after attending Father Ryan for 2 years. He and his wife have 9 children with 3 sets of twins. One of their sons is in the seminary. He attended the reunion and said of all the places his family moved that Nashville/Christ the King had more of a sense of community than anywhere else. One continual remark that evening was how fortunate they all were to have grown up in the Belmont area with CKS as their community focus. Classmate Jim Gibbons brought original letters that his mother saved that the class had written to him in the 2nd grade when he was out for a tonsillectomy - they were the hit of the party.” - Tommy Ducklo
Letters compliments of Mr. Jim Gibbons (just a few of the 48 letters carefully kept by his mother many years ago)
