Structural Analysis

Objective: Analyze the behavior of structural systems, including the static and dynamic loads on building and how building design can be subsequently optimized.

Tools/ Software: SCIA Engineer

BIM USE: Structural Analysis Interoperability Tool Using SCIA Engineer 21

SCIA Engineer is one of the first structural analysis software applications to be certified for both import and export of IFC 2x3. An Open BIM workflow for structural analysis is made easier with its special BIM toolbox. It enhances project efficiency and stakeholder collaboration by reducing manual tasks and adapting to any workflow. Open BIM is made possible by a fundamental component, the IFC format, one of many formats that SCIA Engineer supports. To create the Model View Definition (MVD) needed for this work, a new 3D view was created in Revit Structure 2021 and named SCIA Model. The view ensured that all structural elements of the building were visible for the analysis. A 2x3 Coordination 2.0 Schema was then used to export this view to the IFC. As part of the export process, all structural elements are properly defined and exported in accordance with their respective IfcName.

A material table in .CON format was created for converting the structural elements’ materials from Revit to SCIA Engineer Material. All existing materials have been mapped to C25/30. A reference model of the ifc model was then imported into SCIA.

Import Model Manage Settings

Assign settings

1)

Import structural IFC generated from Revit

Structural Analysis

2) Map structural elements/ materials to SCIA recognized values

3) Convert solid element to ID and 2D SCIA elements

4)

Assign resistance ratings to structural elements

5)

Assign load bearing status to structural elements

Solid elements had to be converted to 1D and 2D SCIA elements using the BIM Toolbox tool since the reference model import type was used. During the conversion process, structural columns and beams were converted to 1D elements, and walls and slabs were transformed into 2D elements.

This BIM toolbox alignment tool ensured that the converted 1D and 2D elements were connected correctly.

6)

Calculate/ Analyze internal forces and deformation of the structural elements

7)

All existing column sections and their materials were modified to HEB300 and S275 respectively. In addition, all structural elements were assigned a fire rating of R60, and their load bearing status was confirmed as activated.

Structural Analysis

The 1D and 2D elements now have a fixed support type; load groups and load cases (self-weight) have been created; and all 2D elements have been meshed. The ‘Calculate’ button was selected to analyze internal forces and deformation of the structural elements.

As a result of structural analysis of the building frame and design of structural elements, the structural model was exported in Tekla Structures to ifc 2x3 CV2.0 schema for the creation of reinforcement detail drawings and steel fabrication drawings.`
