Swot Analysis

SWOT analysis (or SWOT matrix) is an acronym for Strengths, Weaknesses, Opportunities, and Threats. It relates to business competition or project planning (Zach,1999). The process is sometimes referred to as situational assessment or situational analysis.

The technique is intended for use at the preliminary stages of decision-making processes and can be used to assess an organization’s strategic position.

The goal is to identify both internal and external factors that are supportive and unsupportive of the project’s goals. SWOT analyses require users to ask and answer questions to generate meaningful information in each category so that they can identify their competitive advantage and make the tool useful for them.

Internal and external factors

Opportunities and threats are typically viewed as external threats, while strengths and weaknesses are usually viewed as internal. Strategic fit refers to how well a firm matches its strengths with its opportunities.

Internal factors are viewed as strengths or weaknesses depending upon their effect on the organization’s objectives. What may represent strengths with respect to one objective may be weaknesses (distractions, competition) for another objective. The factors may include personnel, finance, manufacturing capabilities, and all of the marketing mix’s 4Ps.

External factors include macroeconomics, technological change, legislation, and sociocultural changes, as well as changes in the marketplace.

Strength

What do you do well? What unique resource do you have? What do others compliment or praise?

Automation of template and processes

Reduction of construction cost

Reduction of construction waste due to model validation and clash detection

Multidiscipline experience with certifications in BIM

Shared risk and rewards among all parties. Fair development

Weaknesses?

Improved collaboration/ expert input throughoutt project development.

Where is there room for improvement? What resources do you lack? What critiques do you receive?

High cost of BIM implementation

High labor consumption to create accurate BIM models

No software provides all BIM uses

Need to focus on geometric modelling as well as information management

Quality control and model auditing Design process and coordination time

Internal External

Opportunities

What opportunities do you have? What trends can you take advantage of? How can your strengths be uses?

Deleloping higher awareness among all stakeholders

Outsourcing capabilites (e.g Fivrr, LinkedIN)

Threats

What potential treats do you face? What changes in your industry are troublesome? What threats do your weakness expose?

Developments in ditigalization (AR, gaming, blockchain, NFT)

Mandatory implementation of BIM in public procurement in many countries

Pioneering a rapidly evolving industry with high demands for skilled leaders

Strategies to make use of Opportunities through our Strengths

Higher quality of projects should contribute to deleloping higher awareness of all participants

Classifcation advisory to government for facility management

Development of openBIM tools, platforms and applications

Reducing cost of construction projects will increase interest of market leaders in AEC

Utilize media platforms to champion good BIM practices and procure clients

Automation of work should increase research and deveopment

Lack of legal regulations and binding standards concerning BIM

Competition from emerging technology and software

Material cost and scarcity

Lack of qualified and experienced staff Assessibility to information (online content and international standards)

Pandemic

Unwillingness of some contractors/ clients/ users to employ BIM

Strategies to prevent Threats through our Strengths

Tertiary education involvement to influence new technologist and designers

Integreate services with other technology industries (eg blockchain) to provide niche

Strategies to make use of Opportunites to mimimize Weaknesses

BIM implementation in public procurement may create private interests

Examine trends in industry (eg gaming and meadia to develop relatable content)

Government approval for 1/2

Pilot project for strategic development and training

Customize API according to use cases

Use of parametric design tools to improve accuracy of BIM objects and information

Commercial license & license / cloud storage duration control

Education of parties to the process of developing any particular BIM usage

Establish clear EIR/ BEP/ infromation requirements beforehand

Striving to be at the forefront of technological development to attract driven individuals

Develop standards and BIM workflows and procedures

Strategies to miminize potential dangers lying in sectors where Weakness meet Threats

Create training programs and work with educational institutes to supply skill labor

Plan for the unknown such as pandemics (eg remote working infrastructure)

Provide clear marketing content to address BIM implementation fear

Encourage government regulation of BIM implementation and standard of conduct.

Reducing nominal cost of software and training to encourage good practice

Strategic HR management and increased wages to encourage BIM implementation
