ABOUT THE LADY WARRIORS JOURNEY TO THE TOURNEY No. 5 Midland University is appearing in its fourth straight NAIA National Championship Tournament, having received an automatic bid to the final site in Sioux City also for the fourth year in a row. MU and Hastings shared the 2016 GPAC Regular Season Championship and later met in the finals of the conference tournament. Hastings won the tie-breaker for the GPAC’s regular-season bid to Nationals, and the postseason finals rematch ensured Midland the conference’s second automatic bid. The Lady Warriors enter Nationals with a 26-3 overall record, having suffered two of their losses to Hastings. Midland’s winning percentage (.897) entering the tournament is currently the best in program history.

TO BE THE BEST, YOU HAVE TO BEAT THE BEST Midland routinely plays one of the toughest schedules in the country year in and year out, and the 2016 campaign was no different. The Warriors enter Nationals having posted a 16-3 record against teams ranked or receiving votes in the NAIA Coaches’ Top 25 Poll. MU recorded eight sweeps among those 16 wins. Twelve of those total 19 matches were against conference opponents, once again showcasing the strength of the GPAC. The GPAC has five schools represented at the National Championship, the most for any conference in the country. TOP 10 AGAIN, AND AGAIN The release of the Final Coaches’ Poll on November 14th marked Midland’s 11th straight appearance in the Top 10. The Warriors were a Top 10 team in every release of the poll throughout the 2016 season. MU has been ranked in the Top 10 in 39 of the past 46 polls dating back to the 2013 preseason poll. On September 6, 2016, Midland received the No. 1 ranking in the country and held that position for six consecutive weeks (three polls). It marked the first time in Midland University history that any team had been ranked No. 1 in the NAIA.

NATIONAL TOURNAMENT HISTORY The Lady Warriors are 7-6 all-time at the National Tournament including a 5-4 mark during pool play. Midland was swept in pool play during the 2014 tournament and responded with an unblemished mark in 2015. MU advanced out of pool play in 2013 and 2015, advancing to the Elite Eight both times. Midland was defeated in the 2013 Elite Eight by eventual National Champion, University of Texas at Brownsville, and was eliminated last year by the National Runner-Up, Missouri Baptist University. MU has had two players named to the GOING STREAKING National Championship All-Tournament Team: Megan The Warriors opened the 2016 campaign on a 17-match Farley (’13) and Priscilla O’Dowd (’15). winning streak and appeared poised to challenge the program record before suffering a 3-1 loss at home to Hastings. Despite its challenging schedule, Midland has made a habit of posting huge winning streaks to begin each season. The 2013 squad set a new program record with a 22-match winning streak, and just last year, the Warriors matched that unprecedented record with another 22-match streak. This season’s 17-match streak LEADERS OF THE ‘PAC is the third longest in program history. The 2016 campaign saw Midland claim a share of its firstever regular season conference championship. The Lady Warriors have twice won the GPAC postseason crown (’13 & ’15), but had never earned a regular season title. Midland went 14-2 through conference play, recording its most GPAC wins in program history this year.

Midland University’s Growing Campus Midland University is Nebraska’s fastest growing college. With Nebraska’s largest athletic department, hundreds of opportunities in the performing arts and a cozy campus where you can learn and live, it’s no wonder more students are calling Midland home than ever.

Our History Founded in 1883, Midland University is the product of college and church mergers. Midland College was established in Atchison, Kansas, by the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 15, 1887. The name Midland College was selected because of its central location in the United States. In 1919, the college moved to Fremont, Nebraska. The Fremont property had previously been called Fremont Normal School and Business College. In 1962, Midland merged with Luther Junior College (founded in Wahoo, Nebraska, in 1883). Midland College then became Midland Lutheran College, and finally, in 2010, Midland Lutheran College became Midland University.

Midland University’s history is rooted in multiple institutions, each of which has left its mark on the school and on its mascot. Midland College was first located in Atchison, Kansas, where it was founded by German and Swedish immigrants. The first mascot they selected was the “Tigers,” along with the official colors orange and black. The college was relocated to Fremont in 1919, and the mascot was changed to the “Warriors” in recognition of a theme tied more closely to the history of the founders. Luther College later merged with Midland College in 1962 to create Midland Lutheran College. The Luther College “Vikings” sported blue as their school color prior to the merge. For many years, the Warrior mascot was personified through imagery of a Native American Warrior. This was recognized to be a misfit, however, as Midland’s past was actually routed in European ancestry, and just the name “Warriors” was used without any additional icon. Feeling the absence of a living, breathing figure that appropriately represented the school on and off the field, various warrior types were used in short spurts ranging from “Melvin the Midland Monster” from the early 1990’s to Leonidas, a more recent Spartan Warrior. In 2010, amid Midland Lutheran College’s refounding as Midland University, a new icon was created to reflect Midland’s Nordic history, incorporating both the Luther College Viking blue and the Midland Warrior orange and black. This new Nordic Warrior provides a connection to Midland’s heritage while offering a modern symbol of the strength and determination Midland University student-athletes display as Warriors. Throughout Midland University’s proud history, many changes have taken place. Whether you are connected to Midland from the past, the present, or in the years to come, one thing remains the same. The heart of a Warrior is present in all who call Midland their own.

GREAT PLAINS

ATHLETIC CONFERENCE The Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) is an affiliated conference of the National Association of Intercollegiate Athletics (NAIA), consisting of 11 private, faith-based colleges and universities in Nebraska, Iowa and South Dakota. Originally founded in 1969 as the Nebraska Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (NIAC), the league retains four of the six charter members Concordia, Doane, Hastings, and Midland. In 1992, the NIAC added Northwestern and became the NebraskaIowa Athletic Conference. Eight years later, Dakota Wesleyan, Dordt, Mount Marty and Sioux Falls joined the conference which became the Great Plains Athletic Conference (GPAC) in 2000-2001. Briar Cliff entered the league in 2002-2003 and Morningside joined starting with the 2003-2004 school year. Both schools are in Sioux City, Iowa. In the summer of 2010 Dana College ceased operations (Member from 1969-2010) and in 2011 The University of Sioux Falls discontinued membership in the GPAC (Member from 2000-2011). Nebraska Wesleyan discontinued membership in 2016 (Member from 1969-2016). In 2015 the GPAC added College of Saint Mary in Omaha, Nebraska, as a member. The University of Jamestown in Jamestown, North Dakota, will join the GPAC in 2018-19 as a new member. Jamestown will be an affiliate member for 2017-18 in select sports. The GPAC sponsors 19 intercollegiate sports - nine for women, ten for men, and cheer & dance as a co-ed offering - and awards an All-Sports Trophy based on the final league standings and conference meet results at the end of each school year. Competitive Cheer and Dance is offered in the GPAC as an invitational sport (since 2013-2014). Since the 2005-2006 school year the GPAC has awarded the Christopherson All-Academic Award. The award is a traveling trophy to

be presented annually to the GPAC institution with the best academic performance by its student-athletes in all sports. The award is named in honor of Dr. Myrvin Christopherson, former President of Dana College. Christopherson had served as the first chair of the GPAC Council of Presidents. Concordia is the most recent winner of the Christopherson AllAcademic Award. Through our first 16 years as a conference the GPAC has 23 NAIA team National Champions. First and foremost, the GPAC remains committed to Academic and Athletic Excellence! Last year 641 student-athletes from the conference earned Daktronics-NAIA Scholar-Athlete honors. In addition, 164 teams in the GPAC were honored as NAIA Scholar-teams. Corey Westra of Sioux City, Iowa, is the GPAC Commissioner and Lucas Mohrman of Columbus, Nebraska, is the GPAC Assistant Commissioner for Sports Information.

HEAD COACH

PAULGIESSELMANN 7th Season • 175-64 at Midland (402-144 Overall) The 2016 campaign is Paul Giesselmann’s seventh year as head coach of the Warrior volleyball program. Coach Giesselmann has led Midland to a 20+ win season in six consecutive campaigns. Since his arrival in 2010, Midland has posted a 175-64 record. Under Giesselmann’s guidance, the Warriors have won a pair of GPAC postseason championships and were the 2016 regular season co-champs. Giesselmann entered the 2016 season with a 376-141 career record as an NAIA head coach. His .727 winning percentage is the 11th best among active volleyball coaches, and those 376 wins rank 16th. Coach G notched his 400th career NAIA win on November 5, 2016. Midland appeared in its fourth straight GPAC postseason title match in 2016 and was the No.1-ranked team in the country for three straight releases of the NAIA Coaches’ Poll this year. The Warriors’ 14 GPAC wins this season were the most in program history. In 2013, the Warriors set a new school record with 37 wins, including a 22-match winning streak (tied in 2015) to begin the year which shattered Midland’s previous mark of 10 set in 1995. Midland won the 2013 GPAC postseason tournament, earning an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. The Warriors went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the final bracket where they beat conference rival Northwestern (3-1) before falling to the eventual National Champions, University of Texas at Brownsville (3-1) in the “Elite 8”. In Giesselmann’s previous three years as the Warriors’ head coach, the team nearly tripled their GPAC wins total and went from having an eight-win season in 2009 to finishing with 21 wins in 2011 and 2012. Under Giesselmann’s direction, the 2012 team appeared in the semifinal round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament. They also had five postseason award winners, earned 11 GPAC victories and were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll throughout the season for the first time in school history. Additionally, Giesselmann has helped to cultivate success off the court, with his teams winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in three consecutive seasons. Giesselmann joined the Warriors in 2010 after coaching at Creighton University since 2003. At Creighton, Giesselmann served as Creighton’s recruiting coordinator while working heavily with individual on-court training. During his time at Creighton, Giesselmann worked closely with and helped develop the institution’s first two AllAmericans at middle blocker: Kelly Goc and Jessica Hotus. With his recommendations, Creighton offered and signed the top prep players in Nebraska and the Midwest to complete eight top-notch recruiting classes. Creighton’s seven selections to the MVC All-Freshman Team in the last seven years are tied for second-most leaguewide, and the Jays became one of two schools in league history with multiple All-Freshman team picks in consecutive seasons (2004 and 2005). Prior to his service at Creighton, Giesselmann was Head Coach at College of St. Mary from 1994-2001. There he earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and Region Coach of the Year accolades in 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He also claimed Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in seven straight seasons from 1995-2001. As the College of St. Mary’s all-time winningest coach, Giesselmann led the Flames to a number-two national ranking in 2001 and four national tournament @Midland_Sports

appearances finishing in the NAIA Elite Eight twice and the NAIA Final Four in 2000. He was also named the Omaha World-Herald Nebraska State College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999, and Giesselmann earned two regional championships, six consecutive MCAC championships and seven consecutive MCAC tournament titles. Giesselmann owns a 319-126 career NAIA record, ranking 12th among active head coaches with an impressive .717 winning percentage. Giesselmann has coached 11 Academic All-Americans, 14 All-Americans, 24 All-Region athletes, 19 All-GPAC players, 33 All-MCAC athletes, three Region of the Year players, five MCAC Player of the Year athletes and has had six players named to the NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team. In addition to his teams’ success on the court, all eight of Giesselmann’s squads at CSM earned American Volleyball Coaches Association National Team Academic Awards, from 1994-2001. He also received the Omaha Sportscasters Recognition Award in 1996 and 2000. Giesselmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Endorsement in Health and Physical Education K-12 and an Endorsement in Coaching at Wayne State College in 1988. Giesselmann is married to Dr. Paige Groppe and they have three children, twin boys Hunter and Garret, who both play on the Midland golf team, and a daughter, Ansley. The Giesselmann’s reside in Fremont.
