2017 VOLLEYBALL POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

Midland University’s Growing Campus Midland University is Nebraska’s fastest growing college. With Nebraska’s largest athletic department, hundreds of opportunities in the performing arts and a cozy campus where you can learn and live, it’s no wonder more students are calling Midland home than ever.

Our History Founded in 1883, Midland University is the product of college and church mergers. Midland College was established in Atchison, Kansas, by the General Synod of the Evangelical Lutheran Church on September 15, 1887. The name Midland College was selected because of its central location in the United States. In 1919, the college moved to Fremont, Nebraska. The Fremont property had previously been called Fremont Normal School and Business College. In 1962, Midland merged with Luther Junior College (founded in Wahoo, Nebraska, in 1883). Midland College then became Midland Lutheran College, and finally, in 2010, Midland Lutheran College became Midland University.

2017 VOLLEYBALL POSTSEASON MEDIA GUIDE

Midland University’s history is rooted in multiple institutions, each of which has left its mark on the school and on its mascot. Midland College was first located in Atchison, Kansas, where it was founded by German and Swedish immigrants. The first mascot they selected was the “Tigers,” along with the official colors orange and black. The college was relocated to Fremont in 1919, and the mascot was changed to the “Warriors” in recognition of a theme tied more closely to the history of the founders. Luther College later merged with Midland College in 1962 to create Midland Lutheran College. The Luther College “Vikings” sported blue as their school color prior to the merge. For many years, the Warrior mascot was personified through imagery of a Native American Warrior. This was recognized to be a misfit, however, as Midland’s past was actually routed in European ancestry, and just the name “Warriors” was used without any additional icon. Feeling the absence of a living, breathing figure that appropriately represented the school on and off the field, various warrior types were used in short spurts ranging from “Melvin the Midland Monster” from the early 1990’s to Leonidas, a more recent Spartan Warrior. In 2010, amid Midland Lutheran College’s refounding as Midland University, a new icon was created to reflect Midland’s Nordic history, incorporating both the Luther College Viking blue and the Midland Warrior orange and black. This new Nordic Warrior provides a connection to Midland’s heritage while offering a modern symbol of the strength and determination Midland University student-athletes display as Warriors. Throughout Midland University’s proud history, many changes have taken place. Whether you are connected to Midland from the past, the present, or in the years to come, one thing remains the same. The heart of a Warrior is present in all who call Midland their own.

HEAD COACH

PAULGIESSELMANN

8TH SEASON • 199-74 at MIDLAND • 426-154 OVERALL

The 2017 campaign is Paul Giesselmann’s eighth year as head coach of the Warrior volleyball program. Coach Giesselmann has led Midland to a 20+ win season in six consecutive campaigns and with one more win at the NAIA Volleyball Nationals, he will make it seven straight seasons. A win in Sioux City would also be his 200th at Midland University. Since his arrival in 2010, Midland has posted a 199-74 record. Under Giesselmann’s guidance, the Warriors have won a pair of GPAC Postseason Tournament Championships and were the 2016 GPAC Regular Season Co-Champs. Giesselmann entered the 2016 season with a 376-141 career record as an NAIA head coach. His .727 winning percentage is the 11th best among active volleyball coaches, and those 376 wins rank 16th. In 2017 Midland went 11-5 in conference play finishing fourth in arguably the toughest volleyball conference in the NAIA. At one point there were four teams from the GPAC ranked in the top ten of the coaches’ poll. The Warriors advanced to the semifinals of the postseason tournament for the seventh straight year. In 2013, the Warriors set a new school record with 37 wins, including a 22-match winning streak (tied in 2015) to begin the year which shattered Midland’s previous mark of 10 set in 1995. Midland won the 2013 GPAC postseason tournament, earning an automatic bid into the NAIA National Tournament for the first time in school history. The Warriors went 2-1 in pool play to advance to the final bracket where they beat conference rival Northwestern (3-1) before falling to the eventual National Champions, University of Texas at Brownsville (3-1) in the “Elite 8”. In Giesselmann’s first three years as the Warriors’ head coach, the team nearly tripled their GPAC wins total and went from having an eight-win season in 2009 to finishing with 21 wins in 2011 and 2012. Under his direction, the 2012 team appeared in the semifinal round of the GPAC Postseason Tournament. In just three season his team earned five postseason awards, earned 11 GPAC victories and were ranked in the NAIA Top 25 Coaches Poll throughout the season for the first time in school history. Additionally, Giesselmann has helped to cultivate success off the court, with his teams winning the American Volleyball Coaches Association Team Academic Award in three consecutive seasons. Giesselmann joined the Warriors in 2010 after coaching at Creighton University since 2003. At Creighton, Giesselmann served as Creighton’s recruiting coordinator while working heavily with individual on-court training. During his time at Creighton, Giesselmann worked closely with and helped develop the institution’s first two All-Americans at middle blocker: Kelly Goc and Jessica Hotus. With his recommendations, Creighton offered and signed the top prep players in Nebraska and the Midwest to complete eight top-

notch recruiting classes. Creighton’s seven selections to the MVC AllFreshman Team in seven years are tied for second-most leaguewide, and the Jays became one of two schools in league history with multiple All-Freshman team picks in consecutive seasons (2004 and 2005). Prior to his service at Creighton, Giesselmann was head volleyball coach at College of Saint Mary (Neb.) from 1994–2001. There he earned NAIA National Coach of the Year honors in 2000 and Region Coach of the Year accolades in 1996, 1999, 2000 and 2001. He also claimed Midlands Collegiate Athletic Conference Coach of the Year honors in seven straight seasons from 1995–2001. As the College of Saint Mary’s all-time winningest coach, Giesselmann led the Flames to a number-two national ranking in 2001 and four national tournament appearances finishing in the NAIA Elite Eight twice and the NAIA Final Four in 2000. He was also named the Omaha World-Herald Nebraska State College Women’s Coach of the Year in 1999, and Giesselmann earned two regional championships, six consecutive MCAC championships and seven consecutive MCAC tournament titles. Coming into the 2017 season Giesselmann had a 407-145 career NAIA record, ranking 12th among active head coaches with an impressive .737 winning percentage. Giesselmann has coached 12 Academic All-Americans, 17 All-Americans, 29 All-Region athletes, 27 All-GPAC players, 33 AllMCAC athletes, three Region of the Year players, five MCAC Player of the Year athletes and has had six players named to the NAIA National Championship All-Tournament Team. In addition to his teams’ success on the court, all eight of Giesselmann’s squads at CSM earned American Volleyball Coaches Association National Team Academic Awards, from 1994-2001. He also received the Omaha Sportscasters Recognition Award in 1996 and 2000. Giesselmann earned a Bachelor of Arts in Education with an Endorsement in Health and Physical Education K-12 and an Endorsement in Coaching from Wayne State College in 1988. Giesselmann is married to Dr. Paige Groppe and they have three children, twin boys Hunter and Garret, who both play on the Midland golf team, and a daughter, Ansley. The Giesselmann’s reside in Fremont.
