While the sales totaled US$8,489,400, far exceeding presale expectations, this auction marked a pivotal point for the art world in the region. Not only did it establish a wealth of new talent but also it highlighted how much the contemporary art world has developed and how the Arab world and Iran have been vibrant centers in the production of modern art. Two major highlights of the auction

were by Egyptian artist Ahmed Moustafa whose Orbits of Praise realized US$240,000 and Where Two Oceans Meet (US$284,800) established a new world record price for the artist. However, Dubai residents were not that surprised. After all the art scene has grown tremendously in the past five years and reflects not only the enthusiasm of the curators but the burgeoning numbers of art galleries which encompass and promote classic, traditional, contemporary as well as international art.

Of the existing galleries, the Majlis Gallery in Bur Dubai was the first to recognize that Dubai residents wanted more than just ‘suitcase art’ and they have established themselves as the premier gallery in the emirate. Located in a traditional Arabic house with evocative courtyard, the tranquil atmosphere and friendly non-intimidating staff make this a must-visit destination. This year they also collaborated with the Madhaf Gallery in London and together ABOVE

with a view to the rest of the house, which quickly transforms your
time at the Hamad abode into an exercise in self-awareness. While it may feel quite dramatic, the home is uncomplicated by nature. “The design of this house,” Al-Najjar explains, “strikes you with its unique originality and simplicity. This is achieved, not so much by the use of any unfamiliar or shocking elements, but by the unusual way the different parts of the house relate to each other.” Indeed, the materials used throughout the house are far from ‘shocking’ or ‘unfamiliar’. From concrete floors, to a half-suspended stained oak staircase and glass doors, there is nothing convoluted or ornate about Al-Najjar’s creation.
