RAISE A GLASS WITH THE FATHER OF AUSTRALIAN BREWING Almost 250 years ago, a chicken stealing highwayman arrived in the colony o f New South Wales as a convict on the First Fleet. From these somewhat inauspicious beginnings, James Squire would rise to become a successful landowner and respected member o f the community - and, o f course, Australia’s first brewer.

oday, the James Squire range honours his legacy and the grateful beer drinkers of Australia like to raise a glass to toast his extraordinary life. And where better to do that than at a James Squire brewhouse? The first brewhouse opened in 2003 at Sydney’s King Street Wharf to introduce people to the true (and remarkable) story of Australia’s first brewer. Plus it showed people that beer was just as good a match for food as wine. The brewhouse closed in 2011, but there are now seven more around the country and plenty more in the works. Dotted across the country, each brewhouse captures the unique spirit of its location as well as the spirit of James Squire himself. In Newcastle, The Squire’s Maiden gives a nod to James’ four wives (or mistresses). Adelaide’s Curious Squire, Brisbane’s Charming Squire and Melbourne’s Crafty Squire tell of his roguish nature and passion for life. There are two brewhouses in WA, The Generous Squire in the heart of the Perth CBD and The Squire’s Fortune in Scarborough, charting James’ rise from convict to Australia’s first
brewer. Our newest brewhouse, The Cheeky Squire, opened its doors in Frankston in June. While you’ll always see James Squire on tap at your local, the brewhouses are the only place to try the full range including some extra special limited releases. The James Squire brewers love to tinker with the recipes and come up with seasonal brews using their favourite ingredients. In fact, three of the brewhouses have their own on-site brewery and create beers exclusively for that venue. If you’re in Melbourne, Perth or Brisbane, you can be the first to taste a brand new brew. The James Squire crew are hard at work kitting out more brewhouses around the country that will open in the coming months. The flagship bar in Sydney’s Circular Quay will bring the legacy back to where it began, right on Sydney Harbour. A project is also underway on the Gold Coast. And with direct flights to most of these destinations, Tigerair is the best way to get yourself to a James Squire brewhouse.
