Summer Concert Series

June 18th “An Evening of Jazz” with Oasis

A

From Big Band to Rock and Roll, the seven musicians in Oasis deliver favorite tunes from Classic Swing (30’s and 40’s), Golden Oldies (50’s and 60’s), Jazz Classics, Rhythm and Blues, as well as 70’ and 80’s hits. “Our name, Oasis, explains our mission as a band,” say bassist Ed Harris, a professional in his art since high school. “We simply want to provide refreshment and an eclectic range of music that carries people – of all ages – away.” Vocalist Candy Arend and her husband, drummer Dave Arend said “It’s all about the music and everyone having fun together.” On keyboards and vocals is Dan Murry. He speculates that Oasis is well received “because of the professional skills of each band member as well as the mature and mutual respect between us.” Saxophonist Bob Osborn, has played at the Sahara in Las Vegas and Harrah’s in Tahoe. “You have to know what your song means so you can communicate with your audience.” Richard Green, guitar, flute and vocals, performs regularly at local dinner houses. “Each of the members in Oasis have strengths in different types of music,” he points out. “It’s the variety that we bring to the band that makes us so able to please our audience.”

CITY OF ATASCADERO RECREATION GUIDE | SUMMER 2016

Sponsored by APAC Guy Budd and the Gypsy Souls are one of the premier acts on the California Central Coast. Their blend of blues, rock, funk, and jazz is highlighted by the masterful guitar work of Budd and his smoky vocals. The band plays an eclectic mix of original compositions, as well as covers from many of the great blues and jazz artists of the last 50 years. Guy forged his original music while hitting the road with some of the best musicians in the country starting in the late 1960’s and 1970’s, and then through his own incarnations of the Guy Budd Band the last 15+ years. During that time, he has shared the stage with B.B. King, Clarence “Gatemouth” Brown, Johnny Winter, Charlie Musselwhite and many other great artists. His current band, “The Gypsy Souls”, has been together for several years, featuring local musicians Howard Emmons (drummer and owner of the Drum Circuit), bassist Andy Kulikowski, and keyboardist Ken Burton. Each has had their own successful music career, and together have over 60 years of playing experience with various artists and bands.

July 23rd “Country Night” Michael D. Keeney

July 30th The Martin Paris Band

First and foremost I feel so lucky and blessed to be able to transform my emotions, feelings and experiences into heartfelt songs. I don’t feel the need to fill in this space with excerpts from interviews or reviews from critics. As for me, I’m just a tattooed country boy that writes, sings and plays guitar until the pain goes away (at least for awhile). I’m still young enough to kick booty live, and old enough to know that real music comes from the heart and the soul, and not from competitions. Some say that my music is too rock-like, while others say that it’s too mellow...all I know is that it’s me and I like it. I’ve never written or recorded a song for the sole purpose of making money, and I never will. I can only write about what I’ve lived through and what I know and believe in. All of my musical heroes are the same way. True artists are a dying breed. I really do hope that you like my music though, because it’s the only thing that I have to offer anyone anywhere...and if you do like my songs, please let me know.

Formed in 2002, the Martin Paris Band plays a variety of musical genres including Rock, Pop, and Country. With a diverse song list in the repertoire they play at Concerts in the Parks, wineries, and events that offer something for everyone. The band members include the dynamic vocals of Debby White and her energetic personality. Lead guitarist, fiddler, and vocalist Kelly Powers, who hails from Nashville. Bassist Terry Newby, who has some blues roots in L.A. bands. Drummer Matt Wilson, formerly of the arena rock band the Intruders. And founding member Martin Paris on acoustic and electric guitar, who has three solo guitar instrumental albums on Solid Air Records, with a busy solo career as well. Visit www.martinparismusic.com

City of o’s Atascader Summer Concert Series

August 6th The JD Project

Music can mean many different things to many different people. For some, music provides the underscore to their lives, always in the background, accompanying their day-to-day activities, but rarely in the forefront. For others, music is the sound track of their lives, often out in front of everything, matching the pulse and mood of their current state. For others still, music is an art, a science, something to be analyzed. San Luis Obispo’s own, provides the kind of music that works very well for all three instances. Their driving blend of rock, blues, soul, and country provides a pulse that is great for a party atmosphere. It moves you to tap your feet, dance, sing along…basically have a great time. Their lyrics and musicianship will impress even the most discerning of listeners. Their live performances are exciting, amusing, and enjoyable while still leaving the opportunity for people to hold a conversation with each other. All in all, is a great band for any occasion where having a good time is at the top of the list of priorities. Their combination of original and cover tunes, outstanding musicianship, soaring vocals, and overall stage presence will ensure a great time by all in attendance.

CITY OF ATASCADERO RECREATION GUIDE | SUMMER 2016

Próxima Parada has earned a name in San Luis Obispo County. Starting in 2012 as a group of friends wanting to extend their dynamic to their community, they never knew that their project would reach the stage of their favorite venues and music festivals, that their songs would earn awards, that their local radio stations would put their recordings on regular rotation. Próxima Parada’s performances range from unadorned acoustic clear up to floor-stomping dance numbers with enough passion to attract any open ears. Próxima Parada is Andy Olson on drums, Josh Collins on lead guitar, Kevin Middlekauff on bass, Myles Wittman on trumpet, and Nick Larson on keys and vocals.

Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom.” The Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 20,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The Pathway’s purpose is to provide a place to honor both Veterans and Active Military in two ways: First of all, bricks may be engraved with the name of someone who currently serves or has served this great Nation; Second, it gives those who have not served an opportunity to show their support for our Veterans through

a family or business brick. These engraved brick pavers are still available and can be reserved and installed for a $100 donation to the Memorial Foundation. Anyone interested in reserving an engraved paver is invited to use the order form below or to go to our website at: www.FacesofFreedomMemorial.org For more information call 805-461-0639.

We are offering a summer basketball league for boys and girls in a noncompetitive setting. Open to grades 1st through 12th and for any skill level. The League will start Monday June 13th with two weeks of Skills/Practices where players will have the opportunity to work with and learn from experienced players and coaches. After the Skills/Practice weeks, the players will have games twice a week. This will give the inexperienced players the opportunity to learn the structure of game play while the more experienced players get to continue improving their skills in actual game play. For the younger players we will take the time to break it down for them with all staff working together to be sure the players are building up a good understanding for the rules and structure of game play.

Games will be held Monday through Thursday late afternoons into the evenings. June 27th through July 14th, with each team having two games per week.
