Director’s Message

Brady’s Farewell After 18 years with the City of Atascadero and 38 years in public service, I have decided to retire and do some new things. Looking back over the past 38 years, working in public service has been a privilege. Working for the City of Atascadero has been one of the highlights of my life. I have been fortunate to have more than a job, but also personal and professional purpose that has been a huge part of who I am. Cindy and I could not have found a better place to raise our children. I am grateful to have worked with exceptional people on the city staff, City Councils, Commissions, community groups and citizens. All of these people share one thing in common, a desire to make Atascadero a better place. I can truly say it has been my great pleasure to have worked with all of these remarkable people to help shape our community and see some accomplishments realized. To me, it is all about the power of caring individuals working as a team for the good of the community. Atascadero is a model for that kind of shared commitment. Figuratively and literally, together, we have planted a lot of trees for future residents to sit under and enjoy. We built the Colony Park Community Center, Skate Park, Apple Valley Park, the “Faces of Freedom” Veteran’s Memorial and many new trails all over Atascadero. We im-

proved the Zoo, Lake Park, Sunken Gardens, Alvord Field, and Paloma Creek Park. Stadium Park was expanded and protected. We built the Highway 41 storm drain that has helped historically flooded neighborhoods. We started a few things around here that seem to be institutions now in Atascadero. Some of them include the Wine Festival, Tuesday Evenings in the Park, Movies in the Park, the Father-Daughter Dance and a number of special events at the Zoo to name a few. Since 1995, the Youth Recreation Scholarship Fund has enabled a lot of kids participate in all kinds of programs. One of my proudest memories is helping to start the LINK, our north county family resource center for families in need. Past initiatives like these can inspire anyone who wants to see a worthwhile project happen in Atascadero. I always wanted my public service to be non-bureaucratic, humanistic, ethical and dedicated to leave Atascadero better than I found it. I want to thank all of the past and present city staff, Councils, Commissioners and the wonderful people of Atascadero for the support you have given me. My work here may be done, but I have countless memories to take with me. I know that Atascadero’s legacy of success will continue and thrive long after I am gone. Farewell, my friends!

“Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial

Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom”. Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component

is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 14,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The pathway’s purpose is to provide a place for people to honor both Veterans and Active Military who serve and have served this great nation without having made the ultimate sacrifice. Each brick offers an opportunity for someone to place a personal message to honor a person or persons, whose service helped to pave our nation’s “Pathway to Freedom”. These engraved brick pavers are still available and can be reserved and installed for a $100 donation to the Memorial Foundation. Anyone interested in reserving an engraved paver is invited to use the order form below or to go to our website at: www.FacesofFreedomMemorial.org For more information contact Jimmy Quinonez at (805) 674-4684.

Heritage Social Dance

In Heritage Social Dancing, all the dancers interact and cooperate with each other by doing quadrilles, vintage-style contras and circle dances that emphasize traditional values and etiquette. For each dance, your dance teacher/caller teaches every step of each dance before the dance begins, then calls out the steps as the dance progresses so that everyone, young, old and in-between, can dance. No prior experience is necessary. You will learn how to do the Virginia Reel, Lancer’s Quadrille, Promenade Circle and more. Encourage your family, friends, co-workers and community groups to sign up with you and share this unique experience. Or come on your own-we all dance together! In addition to being great exercise and lots of fun, these dance classes will prepare you for a Grand Ball to be held in honor of Atascadero’s 100th Birthday later this year. This is an aerobic activity, so wear comfortable shoes and bring water. For added atmosphere, gentlemen please wear a button shirt and ladies please wear a modest skirt.
