Popular Wine Radio Show Grape Encounters has a new home in

Atascadero, heart of the Paso Robles and Edna Valley Wine Country

T

he wine radio show Grape Encounters recently chose San Luis Obispo County and the City of Atascadero as its home base. According to the show’s creator and host David Wilson, “We wanted to relocate the show from Southern California to a wine region and we literally considered places all over the globe. In the end, we felt that San Luis Obispo County and the City of Atascadero truly reflected the warmth, quality and spirit of our show which we are determined to keep informative, fun and very unpretentious!” Grape Encounters is described as “being about the colorful people, the places, the ambiance and the passion that makes wine drinking one of the world’s most popular pastimes. Grape Encounters is lighthearted, interactive and a very good time – taking listeners out of the studio and into places you won’t see on a winery tour.” Grape Encounters will be based in the El Paseo Plaza in Downtown Atascadero. Host David Wilson is incorporating a unique opportunity for listeners: the chance to participate as part of a studio audience. The long term vision for El Paseo Plaza is to open a wine tasting room, bakery and wine product store, making the plaza a destination in itself for local residents and out of town visitors. Grape Encounters will not only incorporate part of Atascadero, Paso Robles and Edna Valley Wine Country in every show, it will also visit

wine regions from all over the world. Grape Encounters host David Wilson has a passion for creating wine blends and will bring that passion to a new signature event that will take place in Atascadero’s Sunken Gardens this fall. Plans for the event are currently underway and will be announced next month. On the Central Coast, Grape Encounters can be heard on The Krush radio at 92.5 FM on Wednesdays at 5pm and Sundays at 10am, and streaming online at http://www.krush925.com. In Santa Barbara County, Grape Encounters can be heard on AM 1440 The Information Station, serving the Santa Ynez Valley on Saturdays at 11 AM. Grape Encounters is accessible to millions of AM and FM listeners and is also available via podcast online thru a variety of sources including the iTunes Store and GrapeEncounters.com. Grape Encounters and the abbreviated version of the show called UNCORKED currently air on nearly 30 stations and the producers have 8 new Grape Encounters affiliates pending. According to Wilson, “Our goal is to double the number of stations in our network over the next year, showcasing the exciting central coast wine region of San Luis Obispo County.”

Bacchantes Return to Sunken Gardens

B

efore heading west to Atascadero, entrepreneur and developer Edward Garner Lewis founded University City, a suburb of St. Louis, Missouri. Paramount to his vision was the development of a national center for art and education. Towards that end Lewis erected a publishing plant for his Woman’s Magazine and founded the American Woman’s League and it affiliated People’s University which included an Academy of Fine Arts. The Carrera marble statue titled Wrestling Bacchantes and sculpted by the Italian sculptor Petrilla, was displayed at the 1904 World’s Fair by the Italian government. The statue was purchased after the fair for placement in the Statuary Hall at the Woman’s League Art Academy. Lewis departed University City in 1912 to pursue his dream in California, and in 1913 founded the Atascadero Colony. The sculpture of the Wrestling Bacchantes was transported to the new colony and installed as public art on the grounds of La Plaza, not far from the Administration Building. The Bacchantes have known a number of locations since their

4 • Atascadero Magazine

arrival in Atascadero, from the grounds of La Plaza to the “beauty strip” on Atascadero Mall finally gracing the Sunken Gardens in 1963. Age, weather and vandalism took their toll on the statue. When the Bacchantes were removed for restoration they were covered with microbiological growth, dirt, rust stains, etc - even some egg and graffiti. There were also several layers of white paint covering the statue. Vandalism has perhaps played the primary role in the damage to the statue. Over time many of the fingers, toes, and even noses were broken off. Previous restorations caused eventual cracking of the marble. The City contracted with Ethos, conservators of fine art and experts in restoration. The statue was transported to their studio in Cambria where, with care, time and the expertise of craftsmen, the years of exposure to the elements and vandals were reversed. The Wrestling Bacchantes will once again grace the Sunken Gardens with their grand unveiling on Sunday, September 22, 2013.

Fire Department NATIONAL FIRE PREVENTION WEEK OCTOBER 6 – 12, 2013

F

“Prevent Kitchen Fires” that’s the message of this year’s Fire Prevention Week…

rom October 6-12, we’ll be spreading the word that more fires start in the kitchen than in any other part of the home—and educating people on how to keep cooking fires from starting in the first place. Kitchen fires is one of the most common and difficult type of fires to suppress because people tend to panic. They tend to pour water but it will only make the fire bigger. Public awareness about kitchen fires is very important because it is a different type of fire that needs a different approach of extinguishment.

Thanksgiving safety

The kitchen is the heart of the home, especially at Thanksgiving. Kids love to be involved in holiday preparations. Safety in the kitchen is important, especially on Thanksgiving Day when there is a lot of activity and people at home.

Safety tips

• Stay in the kitchen when you are cooking on the stove-top so

7 • Atascadero Magazine

you can keep an eye on the food. • Stay in the home when cooking your turkey and check on it frequently. • Keep children away from the stove. The stove will be hot and kids should stay 3 feet away. • Make sure kids stay away from hot food and liquids. The steam or splash from vegetables, gravy or coffee could cause serious burns. • Keep the floor clear so you don’t trip over kids, toys, pocketbooks or bags. • Keep knives out of the reach of children. • Be sure electric cords from an electric knife, coffee maker, plate warmer or mixer are not dangling off the counter within easy reach of a child. • Keep matches and utility lighters out of the reach of children — up high in a locked cabinet. • Never leave children alone in room with a lit candle.

Fire Department Fire Prevention From Previous Page • Make sure your smoke alarms are working. Test them by pushing the test button. The Fire Prevention Week commemorates the Great Chicago Fire. On the 40th anniversary (1911) of the Great Chicago Fire, the Fire Marshals Association of North America (FMANA); the oldest membership section of the National Fire Protection Association (NFPA), sponsored the first National Fire Prevention Day, deciding to observe the anniversary as a way to keep the public informed about the importance of fire prevention. In May 1919, when the NFPA held its 23rd annual meeting in Ottawa at the invitation of the Dominion Fire Prevention Association (DFPA), the NFPA and DFPA both passed resolutions urging governments in the United States and Canada to support the campaign for a common Fire Prevention Day. This was expanded to Fire Prevention Week in 1922. The non-profit NFPA, which has officially sponsored Fire Prevention Week since its inception, selects the annual theme for Fire Prevention Week. When President Calvin Coolidge proclaimed the first National Fire Prevention Week on October 4–10, 1925, he noted that in the previous year some 15,000 lives were lost to fire in the United States. Calling the loss “startling”, Coolidge’s proclamation stated: “This waste results from the conditions which justify a sense of shame and horror; for the greater part of it could and ought to be prevented... It is highly desirable that every effort be made to reform the conditions which have made possible so vast a destruction of the national wealth”. In Canada, the first national Fire Prevention Day proclamation was issued by the Governor-General in 1919. The earliest known provincial proclamation of Fire Prevention Day was by the Lieutenant-Governor-in-Council of Ontario in 1916. Fire Prevention Week was first proclaimed by the Governor-General in 1923. Fire Service Recognition Day was first incorporated into the GovernorGeneral’s proclamation of Fire Prevention Week in 1977. On October 12, 1957, the NBC children’s western television series, Fury, starring Peter Graves and Bobby Diamond, aired the episode “Fire Prevention Week” to acquaint youngsters with the dangers of forest fires. WE CAN’T HELP IF WE CAN’T FIND YOU! If you have an emergency at your home, will emergency workers be able to find you? Proper identification of your home is essential. Remember, during an emergency, emergency personnel trying to find the correct address can lose precious time. Emergency personnel will be relying on clear street signs and addresses to find your home. Your street address should be printed in letters and numbers that are at least 4 inches tall for residential and 5 to 6 inches tall for commercial. The letters must be contrasting colors. They should be visible from at least 150 feet, both at night and during the day from the main route of travel. If your house is set back from the street or road, post your address at the entrance of your driveway. In situations where more than one home is accessed by a single driveway, all addresses should be posted at the street, and at each appropriate intersection along that driveway. Most hardware stores carry the numbers that you will need. For complete signs of all sizes and configurations, the internet is a great source. Numbers that are reflective, or have a light, are the easiest to see at night. For more information, please contact the Fire Department.

Smoke Detectors

How many smoke detectors should I have?

At least one smoke detector in every bedroom and one outside in the hallway. Also you should install one detector on each level of the home if you have a second floor or basement.

Where is the proper location for the smoke detectors?

Generally on the ceiling at least 4 inches out from the wall. If you must install them on the wall, install them at least 4 inches down from the ceiling but no lower than 12 inches from the ceiling. Keep them high because smoke rises. Place smoke detectors at the top of each stairwell and at the end of each long hallway. Remember, do not place them any closer than 3 feet of an air supply register that might recirculate smoke resulting in a delayed alarm. Be sure to keep the detector away from fireplaces and wood stoves to avoid false alarms.

How are smoke detectors powered?

Some smoke detectors are powered by a 9-volt battery, some are powered by the home’s electrical system, and some are the combination of both. That is, they are wired into the home’s electrical system and equipped with a 9-volt battery back-up.

Who should install my smoke detector?

If you elect to purchase smoke detectors that are to be connected to your home’s electrical system, you should have a qualified electrician install them. If you purchase those that are solely battery powered, you can install them yourself with a screwdriver and a drill, but install them according to the manufacturer’s instructions.

What about maintenance?

Keeping smoke detectors in good condition is easy. Change the battery (if equipped) at least once a year or sooner if the smoke detector signals a low battery. Clean the detector face and screen to remove dust. Test your smoke detector at least weekly. Always follow the manufacturer’s instructions.

After they are installed, then what?

Test them and make sure they work. Everyone in your household should be aware of what they sound like and know what to do if they hear that noise.

How do I test my smoke detector?

Push the test button or test them with smoke. If you test them with smoke, use a match or candle. Blow out the flame and let the smoke drift up into the smoke detector. Never test the smoke detector with a flame!

What is that chirping noise?

That noise, usually every 60 seconds or so, is indicative of a battery that is going dead. This signals you to change the battery as soon as possible. That signal may last for a couple of days, but once the battery is dead you will have no protection at all.

How do I prevent that annoying false alarm?

If you are getting false alarms, try moving your smoke detector farther from the kitchen or bathroom area and closer to the bedroom area. There are smoke detectors on the market that are specifically designed for kitchen or bathroom area use. Regular smoke detectors are too sensitive for these areas and cause annoying false alarms.

Holiday Fire Safety The Atascadero City Fire Department wishes to extend a warm holiday greeting during this special time of year. May your family enjoy the season with safety and care. To make this holiday safe and enjoyable we would like to recommend the following safety tips.

Christmas Trees: • • • • • •

Select a fresh green tree. Cut 1-2 inches off the bottom and immediately immerse in a gallon of water. An average tree may consume between a quart and a gallon of water per day. Discard the tree as soon as possible or when the needles begin to fall and dry out. Remove the tree from the house for pick up. Do not burn the tree in your fireplace as the sap from the tree is deposited on the inside of the chimney as flammable soot. Pine tree branches burn very aggressively in the fireplace and can cause chimney fires. Place the tree away from heat sources, such as heating vents, fireplaces, fireplace inserts, radiators, television sets, or sunny windows.

Lighting: • • • • • • •

• • • • •

Don’t smoke near the tree or decorations. Have large ashtrays if smoking in your home. Store matches/lighters well out of reach of children. Check for cigarette butts in upholstered furniture before you go to bed. Please do not drink and drive. Please use a designated driver.

Fireplace Use: •

Assure chimney is clean. Chimneys should be cleaned annually. • Use firewood that is low in pitch and resins, such as Oak or other hardwoods. • Beware of combustibles in close proximity to the fireplace. • Never use flammable liquids to start fires in the fireplace. If you have any question, please fee free to contact the Atascadero City Fire Department.

Happy Holidays from the Atascadero City Fire Department

Be sure to use only lights approved for indoor use when decorating indoors. String outdoor lights outdoors. Always check light sets. Do not put more than two or three strings of lights on one circuit. Check the tree for excessive dry spots caused by the lights. Don’t attempt to repair a worn light set. Throw it away and replace with a new set. Always turn off the lights of your tree when leaving the house or retiring for the night.

Christmas / New Year Parties: •

Use flame-retardant or non-combustible decorations and costumes.

EVERY FAMILY NEEDS A FIRE ESCAPE PLAN

With practice, you can reduce the time it takes your family to evacuate in a fire. Remember, when it comes to fires, EVERY SECOND COUNTS. 2 escape paths

As a family, draw a map of each level of your home that shows all doors and windows. Then plan 2 ways to get out of each room. • The primary escape path is the easiest way to the outside. It’s usually a door or an exit stairway from a multi-story building. • An alternate escape – another door, a 1st-floor window, or an escape ladder kept in/near an upper-floor window—lets you get out if your primary escape path is blocked by fire or smoke. Never use an elevator in a fire!

A word on windows

Make sure that all of your home’s windows open easily. Windows should never be painted shut! Teach all family members how to unlock windows, open or remove any screens, and operate and open any security bars (these must have quick-release devices).

Extra help

Is any member of your family unable to escape on his or her own? For example, assign someone to help a young child, a child with special needs or an older adult. Have a backup, in case an emergency happens when the primary helper isn’t home.

The meeting spot

Choose an outdoor spot that’s a safe distance from your home—but easy to remember. Ideas include a tree, mailbox, telephone pole or sign in front of your home or building. Mark it on your plan. Having a meeting spot helps you quickly and safely reunite. It also lowers the risk that a family member will be hurt while looking inside for someone who has already exited. For the record—and viewing Post a copy of your plan where everyone can see it (on your refrigerator/bulletin board, in a bathroom). You can also ask your fire department to review it and suggest any improvements. If you have house guests, show them your plan. If you or your child is a house guest (sleepovers, etc.), ask the host about their plan.

The drill

Hold fire drills twice a year to practice your plan. First practice during the day. Also try crawling out while blindfolded or with eyes closed. Teach that it’s hard to see and breathe during a fire. When everyone is familiar with the plan, practice at night, too. Tell children about the drill before they go to bed. If anyone sleeps through the smoke alarm (a child may), assign an adult to wake him or her up during drills and emergencies.

Police Department How to be a good police witness

I

t is mid-July as I am writing this article and so far 2013 has been a busy year for law enforcement in Atascadero. While overall crime is down, there have been several high profile incidents that have been cause for concern. Some of you may be aware that our department has recently responded to multiple significant events including an armed robbery at a local convenience store, a reported kidnapping, and a bank robbery. These incidents all occurred within a matter of weeks from one another. Unfortunately in May our officers also responded to the tragic shooting death of a long time resident, a mother who was a loved member of the community. These incidents, while not connected to one another, do have the overall effect of straining our police resources. I am proud to report that our officers have been successful in arresting the perpetrators and taking these individuals off of our streets. Certainly this is in large part a result of the tremendous work of the men and women of the Atascadero Police Department and our allied agencies. However, there is one group that I do not want to overlook. This group has played a tremendous role in the successful apprehension and prosecution of the individuals responsible for these egregious acts. That group is you, members of the community who have willingly stepped up and assisted law enforcement with the identification and apprehension of those in our society who wish to do us harm. I have often said that our success as a Police Department is dependent on an ongoing, healthy partnership with the members of this community. We just can’t do this job without you. Without the help of our community partners many crimes would go unsolved and I fear be repeated time and again. Please allow me to take this opportunity to assist you in being the best partner for our department that you can be. If you have ever wondered what it takes to be a good witness, here are my tips for you. • First and foremost, be safe. Never put yourself in harm’s way just to get a better look, or out of curiosity. If you are witness to a crime and don’t feel it is safe for you to be in the area, leave immediately. Retreat to a place of safety, and then call for police. While many people feel confident that they can intervene to stop a crime in progress, you should never attempt to do so if it means that you too will become the victim of a crime. • Call the police right away. A delay of only a few minutes can be the difference between our officers making an arrest and the suspect getting away. During a recent bank robbery, our officers were at the location within seconds after the crime occurred. The suspects were able to escape because information about the

crime was not relayed to our department in a timely manner. The faster you can notify our department about your observations, the better we will be able to respond. • Don’t hesitate to call the police. Many people hesitate to contact law enforcement when they witness a crime because they second guess themselves. You may feel that the crime is a trivial incident not worth reporting. Just remember the same criminals who commit trivial crimes are often the ones who commit major ones. Many people are reluctant to report something suspicious because they are unsure of what they are reporting. They may be concerned that what they observed doesn’t rise to the level of a crime. Perhaps they simply aren’t sure that the person they are calling about actually committed the act. When in doubt, call. I encourage people to use the “hair on the back of the neck test”. If it doesn’t feel right, it isn’t. • Don’t let someone talk you out of doing your civic duty. Often we hear reports that someone was going to call the police until a friend or family member talked them out of it. In most of these cases, the witness had an initial instinct to report what they know or saw, but let others decide for them whether to take action. Good citizenship often demands that we act of our own volition in these moments. If you are still reluctant to contact law enforcement, remember that you can report information to law enforcement confidentially. • Do your best to remember pertinent facts. Especially in rapidly unfolding events, it can be difficult to remember specific details about a suspect or crime. Often witnesses are encouraged to take a mental picture of what they have seen. This allows you to remember specific details that would otherwise be quickly forgotten. Look for things that are specific to the individual like a unique tattoo or scar. Try your best to obtain pertinent information like a license plate number for the vehicle that the suspect was driving. If you have access to writing materials, write down notes to yourself immediately after an incident to help you remember these details when talking to police. Using these tips, I am confident that you too can work alongside the Atascadero Police Department as a partner in our fight against crime. I for one am grateful to live in a community where time and time again the residents exhibit an active involvement in working toward the overall good of the community. It is this idea of working toward the “greater good” that has become a major tenet of what the men and women of the Atascadero Police Department do each and every day. Let me be the first to welcome you to our team as partners in this fight.

RECREATION GUIDE

“Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial

Located near the Atascadero Lake Park, the construction of the beautiful “Faces of Freedom” Veterans Memorial was initiated by the Atascadero Veterans Memorial Foundation. A 501C3 Non Profit Organization, the AVMF was founded specifically to design and to build a World Class Veterans Memorial here on the California Central Coast with a completed value of nearly $1,000,000. Built to honor all of America’s Veterans, the Memorial has three unique components: Hero’s Wall, the “Faces of Freedom” Statue, and “The Pathway to Freedom.” The Hero’s Wall specifically honors over 231 San Luis Obispo County Veterans who have paid the ultimate price with their selfless service and sacrifice to our nation. The “Faces of Freedom” Statue represents an artistic timeline that honors our nations’ military heroes from WWI to the present. The final component is “The Pathway to Freedom” a 20,000+ engraved brick pathway that leads to and embraces the Veterans Memorial. The Pathway’s purpose is to provide a place to honor both Veterans and Active Military in two ways: First of all, bricks may be engraved with the name of someone who currently serves or has served this great Nation; Second, it gives those

who have not served an opportunity to show their support for our Veterans through a family or business brick. These engraved brick pavers are still available and can be reserved and installed for a $100 donation to the Memorial Foundation. Anyone interested in reserving an engraved paver is invited to use the order form below or to go to our website at: www.FacesofFreedomMemorial.org For more information call 805-461-0639.

Karen Clanin has been instructing classes at all levels since 1969 and started instructing for the City of Atascadero in 1979. The Beginning Dog Obedience class will cover sit-stand-down, walking on a leash with out pulling, come when called, sit & down stay. Karen’s methods are mostly positive reinforcement, making the learning fun for the owner as well as the dog. For the 1st class, bring your dog on the collar you have and the leash you have (no harnesses please). Proper equipment will be discussed the first class. Also, bring a smelly, tasty, easy to swallow training treat. Karen suggests keeping the treats in a fanny pack so they are easy to get to. A copy of your dog’s immunization record, available from your vet, must be brought to the first class for Karen to keep. Class is scheduled for 1 hour, but may run over slightly so please allow the time. Children under 12 must be accompanied by an adult as they may require assistance. This class is not for aggressive dogs, if you have a questions about this contact Karen and she may meet you privately for evaluation. Please no wolf or wolfhybrids in class. Class # 3621.512
