It’s a winner

Play our new lottery and you could win £25,000 – as well as helping good causes in Portsmouth. The Portsmouth Lottery’s first draw is 5 November. Draws will then be every Saturday. A total of 60p from every £1 ticket will go to charities, voluntary organisations and other good causes that benefit our city. As well as the jackpot, there will be smaller prizes up for grabs. Louise Wilders, our director of community and communications said: “This is an innovative way to support charities and voluntary organisations. “It gives residents the chance to scoop a £25,000 prize, while also helping very good causes in the city. “The lottery is run by an external company, who take responsibility for the prize fund costs, reducing any risk to the council. “We will be encouraging local causes to register as a beneficiary of the lottery.” From each £1 ticket, 60p goes to local good causes. Another 20% goes to the prize fund, and the rest is for running costs and VAT. No money goes to the council. An external lottery management company has been appointed to run the scheme. It has already launched a similar lottery with Aylesbury Vale District Council. Tickets are sold online. “It will provide an exceptional learning environment for young people aged 14 to 19,” says Ciaran. “It will blend academic learning and technical skills and provide an excellent opportunity to gain hands-on experience.” Applications close on 31 October 2016 and the offer date is 1 February 2017. UTC Portsmouth offers an engineering curriculum alongside the core GCSE subjects in years 10 and 11. In years 12 and 13 it offers options including Level 3 engineering diplomas and A Levels. It’s being built in the grounds of Trafalgar School, Hilsea. The project is being led by the University of Portsmouth, the Royal Navy, Salterns Academy Trust and the council. It’s supported by major employers including BAE Systems, QinetiQ, Airbus, NATS, Raymarine and Land Rover BAR. It will specialise in electrical and mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing. Let’s keep pedalling

Your free bike check-up To help keep Portsmouth people pedalling, we’re offering free bike checks and repairs. Just pop along to one of our Bike Doctor sessions in Cosham or Commercial Road pictured above. We’ll give your bike a check-up and do any basic repairs it needs – all for free. The Bike Doctor sessions use experienced cycle mechanics. They’ll check everything on your bike from wheels to gears, from brakes to lights. Any minor adjustments or basic repairs needed can be made there and then. If they can’t fix it immediately, they’ll let you know exactly what needs doing and give you a rough cost. We spoke to cyclists at the Bike Doctor at Commercial Road. One told us: “I use my bike to get to and from work and needed to get one of my brakes fixed. It’s great to get it done for free.” Another said: “I’m getting my brake pads fixed today. It’s brilliant.” Bike Doctor clinics are every Monday, 10am–3pm, in Cosham High Street, and every Wednesday, 10am–3pm, by the Commercial Road fountain. round Portsmouth! Light up the night The evenings are getting darker, but that doesn’t mean your bike has to go back in the shed. Bring your hi-vis kit, glow-in-the-dark accessories and lights, and take part in our first ever Pedal Portsmouth Glow Ride on Saturday 22 October from 6pm to 7pm.

The ride starts from near Blue Reef and will be open for an hour, allowing cyclists of all ages and abilities to enjoy cycling round the course at their own pace while lighting up the night.

Bournemouth Tourism

It’s a fun, free family event, celebrating safe night-time cycling, on a traffic-free route along the seafront. If you’re one of the best-lit cyclists, you could win a prize.

Our road safety team will soon be out on the streets, with police officers, to remind cyclists about being bright at night. They’ll stop cyclists on key routes, give them tips on improving their visibility, and hand out free hi-vis bag covers and lights. Anyone without lights could be issued with a £30 fine.

Supporting carers and enabling you to continue to look after your loved one is at the heart of what we do. One example is the way we work with colleagues at QA Hospital. When the person you care for is admitted to hospital, it can be difficult to know what to do. It can be a time to have a rest from your caring role, but you may feel that you’re the best person to care for your loved one, and want to continue even when they’re in hospital. We want to make sure you get support both in and out of hospital. We’ve been working with staff at QA to help them identify carers when they’re visiting, to make sure they’re aware of the services available to support them. We’ve also been working together to ensure carers are supported if they’re caring for a loved one who’s a patient. Jean* was identified as a carer by ward staff when her husband Douglas* was admitted for an infection. Douglas’s behaviour was sometimes difficult to manage and she spent a lot of time on the ward to settle him and help staff understand his needs. Jean said: “It was such a surprise to know that there were services available to me as a carer. Since Douglas was discharged I’ve got a regular sitting service and I

regularly ring the staff at the Carers Centre for a chat when I’m finding things difficult.” Lizzie Smith, from the Carers Centre, is based at QA. “By being based at the hospital and working with health professionals, we’ve been able to identify carers like Jean, and provide additional support while the person they care for is in hospital. “This has meant more support for carers and has greatly improved the wellbeing of carers who otherwise might have been struggling.” ff Carers can also carry an emergency card to alert paramedics to their caring responsibilities. See the Mary Rose brought to life For many Portsmouth residents, the Mary Rose is part of their own history. Many have childhood memories of school trips – peering through small windows in wonder at the Tudor ship, and even getting wet from the water sprays initially used to conserve her. And now those same visitors get to experience that wonder all over again, feeling closer to the ship than ever before as she is brought to life. Striking projections on to the wreck with atmospheric sounds in the galleries make visitors believe they’re stepping on board with the crew. One recent TripAdvisor review from Portsmouth said: “Making history come alive. The little films of the different areas of the ship really help you to visualise what life must have been like for the men on board.”

A Tudor treasure trove The Mary Rose has a real treasure trove when it comes to Tudor artefacts. From the clothes the men wore on board, to the instruments they used, or the full firepower of the Mary Rose’s guns, visitors can discover something new every time. New homes bring benefits We have plans to build 194 new homes, to ease pressure on our housing waiting list and to bring in income for our services. A block of 16 flats in Winston Churchill Avenue will be completed early next year. Work is due to start later this year on 23 flats on the old Southsea Community Centre site in King Street. Then, in January, building is due to start on 51 flats and nine houses on the old Somerstown Health Centre site in Blackfriars Close.

These homes will be allocated to people on the Portsmouth waiting list, which is based on priority need. Weâ&#x20AC;&#x2122;ve also applied for planning permission for 55 houses and 40 flats on land we own in Havant. Work on new defences at Milton Common

Here’s an update on the work we’re doing with the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership to reduce the risk of flooding and erosion. Work at Milton Common is nearly finished, and the area will be landscaped next year. A new sloping rock barrier and three earth embankments built using chalk from Great Salterns Quay have been constructed, following the quay’s removal. Update on Solent Deal Plans are progressing towards creating a Solent Combined Authority and getting extra powers and funding for our region.

New student homes

New student housing developments are changing the city centre skyline, as the University of Portsmouth grows and demand increases for accommodation in halls. Since 2012, councillors have given planning permission for new developments housing 3,800 students. These new student housing developments in the city centre will free up an estimated 600 much-needed family homes in residential areas. The university brings investment into the city and boosts local businesses, and a top-performing university is good for our city’s reputation. The new developments will also help to keep our city centre a thriving, bustling place. We aim to ensure that university accommodation makes a positive contribution to the city and that there is a balance between housing for students, homes for residents, business property and green space.
