Summer of cycling Riding with other people, led by a trained guide, is a great way to enjoy cycling. Especially if it’s free! All summer there are free guided rides happening near you, as part of our partnership with Sky and British Cycling. By the end of the summer there will have been 20 Sky Ride Local rides, ranging from three miles to 30 miles, led by British Cycling-trained guides. They have different themes, and you can choose one to suit you. Our cycling summer will reach its climax on Sunday 27 September with a cycling event on closed roads and a full day of family entertainment. It will be a celebration of cycling for all ages and abilities, with points across the city where you can join in.

Cycling is on the increase and Portsmouth is an ideal place to enjoy being on your bike, as it’s very compact and mostly flat. We’d like more and more people to feel comfortable riding, especially families. Stewart Kellett of British Cycling, the governing body for cycling, said: “What better way to get some exercise, get outdoors and see your area in a new way than to join some of the Sky Ride Local bike rides in and around Portsmouth? “Whether you want to build your cycling confidence or are already comfortable on a bike and looking for a challenge, now’s the time to register for your free place.” To register and find out more about getting into cycling, go to goskyride.com/Portsmouth

Four amazing da of seafront spect The America’s Cup World Series is expected to bring up to 500,000 people to the seafront to enjoy four days of world-class sport and entertainment. They’ll also see history being made. That’s because Ben Ainslie Racing, based in Portsmouth, will be the first British team to compete in an official America’s Cup event at home since the competition started in the UK in 1851. The organisers promise spectacular views of 45ft flying catamarans racing 50m to 100m from the shoreline at their closest point, battling for points that will determine rankings in the lead-up to the America’s Cup in 2017. The action in the air should be spectacular too, with a series of aerial displays, kicked off by the Red Arrows on Friday, and evening fireworks. Thursday 23 July will see the competing teams on the water in the official parade of sail from the Historic Dockyard to Southsea Common. Preview racing begins on the Friday, while on the Saturday the serious racing gets under way. The final “Super Sunday” on 26 July will see a crucial battle to decide the winner.

Portsmouth Live! concert, with a 50,000-strong crowd singing along to 1980s superstars Spandau Ballet, chart legends Wet Wet Wet, supergroup McBusted and hit singer-songwriter Carly Rae Jepsen. While you’ll catch some of the action from elsewhere, the race village on Southsea Common is the place to get the full experience, with commentary and big screens. It consists of the Waterfront Festival Arena (free tickets) and the Fanzone Arena (paid-for tickets). As Flagship went to press some tickets were still available, but were selling fast. Access on the day will depend on capacity. You can also get up close to the action as the boats are lifted in and out of the water. More information, including details of a special boat tour, at www.historicdockyard.co.uk

The main evening entertainment on Thursday and Friday will be the South Coast Proms, featuring the massed bands of the Royal Marines. Saturday will see the

Food and fun in Southsea

The Darkness

Give yourself a tasty treat and pop down to Southsea town centre for the Southsea Food Festival, 18–19 July. As well as stalls selling delicious locally-produced food and drink, local restaurants will be showcasing their wares. In the Palmerston Road/Osborne Road junction area, more than 70 independent traders will be represented. In the kitchen theatre, chefs will show their skills and give you a chance to sample their creations. The Mamma Mia Italian Market will be another popular feature. On the music stage, the Cellars at Eastney will provide a mix of mellow acoustic sessions and laid-back beats. For little ones there are farm animals, plus competitions and cake decorating.

Meanwhile, in the precinct, check out the Love Southsea Food Market on Saturday and the Hampshire Farmers’ Market on Sunday.

Tower deal brings in £3.5m The airline Emirates is now the first official sponsor of our most famous building, now known as the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. The original design proposals were released last month, featuring Emirates’ distinctive red and white look, and prompted plenty of feedback. So we asked you to send in your ideas for the tower’s new look and hundreds of you responded with a variety of suggestions. After reviewing your feedback, the council and Emirates have together created a new blue, gold and white design inspired by the city’s maritime heritage. The new design will see the bottom of the tower take on a distinctive Portsmouth blue, with Emirates gold on the middle section, and the distinctive Spinnaker sails remaining in white. The five-year sponsorship arrangement means £3.5m for essential services like school classrooms and dementia care. The funding is needed as the council has to find £31m of savings over the next three years, and that’s on top of £75m we have already saved. We weren’t able to consult residents before the sponsorship announcement as the deal was commercially confidential and it was important we didn’t risk losing the funding. The deal also means Emirates will promote Portsmouth to an audience of visitors and investors around the world through inflight films and magazines, making the sponsorship arrangements worth around £5m in total. Emirates are paying to change the look of the tower.

SPECIAL ADVERTISING FEATURE

Open after 100 years – Nestled in a 19th century dry dock in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard, overlooked by HMS Victory and alongside the stunning new Mary Rose Museum, is a small ship with a very big history: HMS M.33. She was so insignificant when she was launched, in 1915, that she didn’t even warrant a name, just a number. Built in just seven weeks as a Monitor, a ship with a shallow draft, M.33 is a unique survivor of a campaign in Gallipoli (now part of Turkey) which was to mark one of the Allies’ biggest defeats of the First World War. The ship’s shallow draft allowed her to get close to shore and fire at targets on land. She carried two powerful and oversize 6in guns, but was a basic metal box, lacking in comfort for the 72 officers and men who sailed to Gallipoli in her. They were away from home for over three years. After the First World War she was refitted and returned to action in the Russian Civil War, after which she spent the rest of her active life in Portsmouth Harbour. Now a £2.4m project by the National Museum of the Royal Navy and Hampshire County Council, M.33 is restored, helped by a £1.8m grant from the Heritage Lottery Fund. She will be open to all for the first time on 7 August, after an official opening the day before. Professor Dominic Tweddle, Director-General of the National Museum of the Royal Navy, said: “This year, the centenary of Gallipoli, HMS M.33 will be the only British warship of the First World War that the public can get on board. She will be a permanent commemoration and a reminder that the war took place at sea just as much as on land.”

Main picture: HMS M.33 at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Inset: the ship’s company in 1915, and M.33 in service.

NATIONAL MUSEUM OF THE ROYAL NAVY–HMS M.33

a Royal Navy survivor Boatbuilding experience Later this summer we’ll see the opening of Boathouse 4, (above), which will offer free courses and drop-in activities for families, as well as a hands-on exhibition about small naval boats and a brasserie restaurant with stunning harbour views.

Moving tribute A stunning free event will mark the official opening of the ship on 6 August. Internationally acclaimed dance company Motionhouse, (above), alongside an array of local arts organisations, will perform Theatre of Gallipoli, taking visitors through the opening events of the bloody campaign. This fast-paced and moving piece of street theatre and dance starts at 1pm in Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. For more info visit www.nmrn.org.uk

A new generation of boat builders are being trained in this restored building. Visitors will be able to watch their skills in action and learn about the vital role of small boats in the Royal Navy, from the wooden cutters that ferried Lord Nelson to and from his flagship, to the Cockleshell Heroes’ canoes and the powerful motorboats that helped to win the Second World War. You’ll be able to try the rowing and lifting challenges and even climb to the top of the crow’s nest (a small fee will apply). Boathouse 4 will have free admission. For more information visit www.historicdockyard.co.uk

Come aboard

A big day out

Visitors to M.33 will start with a six metre descent into the bottom of the historic dry dock – a unique experience in itself – before stepping on board.

Experience the Royal Navy at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard’s world-famous attractions, including HMS Victory, the new HMS M.33 and Boathouse 4, the Mary Rose, HMS Warrior 1860 and Action Stations. Plus there’s the National Museum of the Royal Navy’s Submarine Museum and Explosion, just a short waterbus ride across the harbour, and the Royal Marines Museum along Southsea seafront.

Once on board, modern interpretative techniques, including a stunning immersive battle experience, will bring alive the stories of the men who served on board, and the fierce history of the Gallipoli Campaign. There is safe, level access throughout the hold of M.33, meaning all visitors, including those using wheelchairs, will be able to engage with the main visitor experience. And that’s not all. The HMS M.33 project is part of the museum’s wider Great War At Sea 1914–1918 programme. It is accompanied by a special exhibition, Gallipoli: Myth and Memory.

Ten amazing attractions and one big, brilliant value ticket that can be used again and again. With loads of extra free hands-on family activities, plenty of places to eat and shop and 20% off when you buy your ticket online, visit www.historicdockyard.co.uk now.

Be a record breaker The Summer Reading Challenge is a brilliant free holiday activity. Just take the kids down to your local library and get them started on this year’s theme, which is all about discovering weird, wonderful and wacky world records. Children get a fold-out poster and collect rewards as they reach their goal of reading six books over the summer holiday. Those who complete the challenge are invited to a special event in September to receive certificates and medals. David Percival, of our library service, said: “It’s a really fun way to get children reading widely over the holidays. Over the last few years, the number of children completing the challenge has got bigger and bigger. Let’s see if we can make this a truly record-breaking summer for reading in Portsmouth.”

Help for busy parent carers If you’re a parent of a child with additional needs – such as a disability or long-term medical condition – you probably don’t see yourself as a carer. You may just get on with your busy, demanding life, and you may not be aware of the help and support that might be available. Parents of children with disabilities or medical conditions are often supported by children’s or health services. But a carer’s assessment from the Carers Centre can work out if there is more support available to make your life a little easier. The centre can provide: ff training to help tackle challenging behaviour and difficult situations ff groups for siblings and young carers ff a friendly carers café and support groups ff advice about financial support and funding ff education ff cookery classes ff social events and opportunities to relax and have fun ff general information and advice Vanessa Salter, a mum of five from Paulsgrove, was a full-time carer to her husband, who has Huntington’s disease, and still cares for her son, who has multiple additional needs including autism. She said: “Parents of children with additional needs don’t recognise themselves as carers. The physical, mental and social impact on the whole family is massive, and the Carers Centre is there to help.” “My other children have gained a lot of support from the young carers project – the support siblings receive from other children who are in the same position is amazing. It’s important they realise they aren’t alone and have time to just be children. “I’ve met some amazing people who’ve become friends. The centre has opened a lot of doors for me, inspired me and given me confidence. Now I volunteer for the carer’s service and support with events and in the café. “I’d encourage anyone in the same situation to get in touch with the centre. You’re sure of a warm welcome and lots of support and advice.”

Keep in touch The Carers Centre is at 117 Orchard Road, Southsea and is open Monday to Thursday 9am–5pm, Friday 9am–4.30pm and Saturday 10am–2pm. ff Call us on 023 9285 1864 ff Email us on carerscentre@portsmouthcc.gov.uk ff Search carers at www.portsmouth.gov.uk ff Follow us on Facebook: www.facebook.com/ portsmouthcarerscentre

Enjoy sunshine more safely Sun damage doesn’t just happen when you’re on holiday. It can happen when you’re not expecting it – when you go for a walk or just sit in the garden. Skin cancer is one of the most common cancers in the UK, and too much sun can increase your risk. Over-exposure to sunlight can also affect your eyes. Be SMART and reduce the risks: ff Spend time in the shade between 11am and 3pm. ff Make sure you never burn. ff Aim to cover up with a T-shirt, hat and sunglasses. ff Remember to take extra care with children. ff Then use sunscreen – factor 15 or more. Report mole changes or unusual skin growths to your GP. Remember, sunbeds are not a safe alternative to sunbathing as your skin will still be exposed to harmful UV rays.

Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group

Urgent care – what you’ve told us Over the last 10 years or so there have been huge changes to urgent care – for when you need help in a hurry, but don’t need to call 999 or go to QA’s emergency department (ED).

ff More than 83% felt that a walk-in service should be within three or four miles of their home

Instead of a choice between ED or a GP appointment, you can:

ff The top three suggestions for stopping people going to ED unnecessarily were: charging people, allowing ED staff to turn people away, and making it easier to see GPs.

ff go to walk-in centres at St Mary’s Treatment Centre or in Guildhall Walk ff call NHS 111 ff visit a late-night pharmacy ff wait for a ‘same-day’ slot at your GP practice.

ff About 30% didn’t know that GPs offer same-day access (all city GP practices do)

The local NHS wants to look again at urgent care services, and will consider this feedback before decisions are made. If you want to give us your views about the local NHS, please visit www.portsmouthccg.nhs.uk/Join-In

Since late 2014 there is also the Urgent Care Centre at QA Hospital, for people who go to ED but who don’t need emergency care.

Don’t be afraid to ask

NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group wants to improve access to urgent care, so we have been asking for your views.

Everyone knows the phrase “doctor knows best”. But a good doctor, nurse or other healthcare professional will never object if you want to know more about your care.

ff 70% of you said it was easy to know which service to choose - but only 25% knew the differences between the walk-in services at St Mary’s, and at Guildhall Walk ff Simplicity was named as the most important element of a good urgent care system, then distance to travel, then quality

You should always feel able to ask why a test or treatment is needed, what the risks are, whether there is an alternative, or even whether ‘do nothing’ is an option. You have the right to be involved, not merely informed.

Save money, be healthy and reduce waste

Every year we in the UK waste £12.5bn of perfectly good food and drink. For an average family with children this can be worth £60 a month.

Why not take action and pledge to reduce your waste and your food bill? Here are some tips to get you started; ff Keep a food diary or calendar with the “use by” dates of products in the fridge on it, so they don’t go to waste. (“Use by” doesn’t always mean “eat by”. If food can be frozen its life can be extended beyond the “use by” date.) ff Make a shopping list and stick to it. ff Don’t cook oversized portions – use a rice or spaghetti measurer if possible. ff Get creative and use up those leftovers.

For recipes and more ideas to reduce waste, go to england.lovefoodhatewaste.com

ff For the best storage set your fridge to 5°C and your freezer to -18ºC. ff Make your own compost from fruit and veg peelings and help your garden.

Cash in your prize at your local Co-op! Keep recyc thos ling ep bott lastic les b ut reme m – no ber lids!

You’re the best in Hampshire! It’s official – Portsmouth’s recycling quality is the highest in Hampshire and it’s down to the hard efforts you all put into sorting your recyclables every fortnight. Just 7.36% of all of the materials in Portsmouth going to be recycled are rejected at the sorting plant for being incorrect. The average rate across Hampshire is over 9% so we think this is a fantastic feat. Keep it up! The amount being recycled is going well too, but this isn’t as straightforward as it may seem… Lifestyle changes and stricter packaging controls have meant that many recycling rates in Hampshire fell last year. For example, paper used to make up the majority of what people recycled, but in the past five years Portsmouth has seen a 75% drop in the amount of paper in recycling bins. This is partly due to the use of new technology like tablet computers, which has dramatically affected sales of newspapers and magazines. In Portsmouth, though, we have a very good record of increasing the amount of other recycled materials we collect. Aluminium cans have increased 34% and plastic bottles 18%, so thanks for all your efforts in putting these into your green bin, box or flats bin.

You can now buy your groceries with a BIG Recycle prize, thanks to the Southern Co-operative. They are kindly donating two £25 gift vouchers every month to the BIG Recycle prize pot. The Southern Co-operative have more than 20 local stores, so getting your bread and milk couldn’t be easier. Make sure you’re “in it to win it” by signing up for the BIG Recycle at bigrecycle.portsmouth.gov.uk Around 14,000 Portsmouth households have signed up since October 2013 and there have been a whopping 1,500 opportunities for prizes, including shopping vouchers, cash and passes to your local Parkwood Leisure gym.

Electrical items lost their spark? Following a successful trial in some areas, all of Portsmouth will soon be able to recycle small electrical items. Recycling crews will shortly be collecting unwanted or broken electrical items such as kettles, hairdryers and toasters. This new service hasn’t begun yet, but look out for special hangers on recycling bins and boxes in the next few weeks announcing its start. Until then, you can take electrical items to the Recycling Centre at Port Solent.

Top tips for a safe summer When you’re out at one of Portsmouth’s great summer events, don’t let it get spoiled. ff Look and feel cool with a hipster hat and shades. Drink plenty of water too! ff Stay away from so-called legal highs (NPS). They’re dangerous and little is known about their side effects. They can lead to death and severe illness. ff Lock your bike with a D-lock. If you’re riding home at night, pack your lights and some hi-vis. ff Keep your mobile with you, and make sure you have an ICE (In Case of Emergency) contact listed.

Get help with violence or abuse Domestic abuse can be devastating – physically, emotionally and financially. If you’re experiencing abuse or violence in your relationship our specialist teams are always happy to talk. They are independent of the police and there is no obligation to report a crime if you don’t want to, but if you do we can help you contact the police and support you through the case. ff Contact us on 023 9268 8472 or email eipadvocacy&support@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

ff Don’t leave valuables on view in your car. ff Pick up a free child-safe wristband from the Guildhall. Write your phone number on it in case your child gets lost during a busy event. ff Arrange a meeting place for family members and maybe have that “stranger danger” talk before you go out.

Dogs on beaches Here’s a reminder about the rules.

Dogs are welcome all year round on beaches in two areas: ff east of the statue at the Royal Marines Museum ff between Southsea Castle and the Square Tower They’re banned from beaches until the autumn in these areas: ff between the Royal Marines Museum statue and Southsea Castle ff the Hot Walls Dogs can play in all Portsmouth parks, apart from Victoria Park.

Friends around the globe As part of our series about Portsmouth’s links with cities around the world, we look at our bond with Portsmouth, Virginia, USA. Tug boats guide USS Harry S. Truman to Norfolk Naval Shipyard (US Navy photo)

Like our own city, Portsmouth, Virginia (VA) has strong naval traditions, and it is on this basis (as well as our shared name) that a sister city link was formed in 1982. Portsmouth, VA was established as a town in 1752 and named after our own city. It has miles of waterfront along the Elizabeth River. The Norfolk Naval Shipyard, a US Navy base within the city limits, upgrades, remodels, and repairs ships. Along with our city, and fellow US Portsmouths in New Hampshire and Rhode Island, it is a signatory to the Portsmouth Atlantic Compact, which pledges the four communities will work together. For more information about Portsmouth, VA go to www.portsmouthva.gov or contact lynne.stagg@ portsmouthcc.gov.uk Twinning and other links are supported, but not funded, by the council.
