In late 2019 the Landing Craft Tank LCT 7074, the sole surviving Landing Craft (Tank) from D-Day, will arrive on Southsea Seafront alongside the museum. She is one of more than 800 LCTs that took part in Operation Overlord, the D-Day landings on 6 June 1944, each capable of carrying ten tanks or other heavy armoured vehicles into battle. The National Museum of the Royal Navy bid to conserve and move LCT 7074 has been backed by a £4.7million National Lottery grant, awarded by the Heritage Lottery Fund. LCT 7074 will open to the public in 2020. 5

The D-Day Story puts visitors in the heart of the action – showing what it would have been like to be involved in the Normandy Landings of 1944. Following its recent £5 million redevelopment, the museum is now better able than ever before to tell the personal stories behind this epic event. It takes visitors on a journey through planning and preparation, through to the Battle of Normandy, and finally the legacy that can still be felt today. The museum tells these stories through fascinating personal accounts, the latest in audio-visual technology and a collection of some 10,000 items. It also contains the unique Overlord Embroidery – which recounts the D-Day campaign through 34 hand-stitched panels that collectively stretch for 83 metres. On site at the museum is a café selling food and drink, as well as an outdoor seating area to enjoy the view towards Southsea Castle. The museum also plays host to a number of events throughout the year, suitable for all ages and interests. www.theddaystory.com

Stroll through Old Portsmouth in the footsteps of Vice Admiral Lord Nelson – it is from here that he set sail for the last time – and view the statue erected in his honour. Explore the historic fortifications at the entrance to Portsmouth Harbour, including the Round Tower and the Square Tower. Built in 1494 as part fortifications and as a home to the Governor of Portsmouth, the Square Tower was converted to a gunpowder store in 1584 and restored to its present condition between 1979 and 1986. View the Australian Settlers Memorial, recalling the sailing of the First Fleet from Spithead to Botany Bay, Australia, on 13 May 1787. Visit the creative quarter Hotwalls Studios, where the city’s historic fortifications have been transformed into thirteen working studios and a waterfront dining space. PORTSMOUTH The Great Waterfront City
Portsmouth is a city with not one, but two cathedrals. St John’s Catholic Cathedral, in the city centre, dates from 1882. The cathedral was badly damaged in one of the major air raids on Portsmouth during World War Two and renovation works were completed in 1950. Outside the Cathedral’s west end stands the prominent sculpture of St John the Evangelist.
INDUSTRIAL HERITAGE AT EASTNEY The Beam Engine and Gas Engine houses at Eastney include a pair of classic Boulton and Watt beam engines and pumps restored to their original 1887 condition. Look out for details of open days.
THE FORTS Discover the national collection of artillery at Fort Nelson, strategically positioned with panoramic views atop Portsdown Hill. Explore 19 acres of ramparts, outer fortifications, secret underground tunnels, and ammunition bunkers at this fully restored Victorian fort. Portchester Castle provides the perfect setting for a relaxed, fun, historic day out. The most impressive and bestpreserved of the Roman ‘Saxon Shore’ forts, Portchester Castle was originally built in the late 3rd century. The castle’s commanding location has made it a major factor in the Solent’s defences for hundreds of years. For a mix of history and luxury, take a boat trip out to one of the Solent Forts for a very special day out or overnight stay. For a more in-depth dive into Portsmouth’s history join one of the city’s regular guided walks.

A walking tour of the coast
Being an island city, Portsmouth is blessed with numerous walking routes – which range from the still and scenic to the bustling and industrial. To help you enjoy the great outdoors, take a walk along Portsea Island’s entire perimeter, where there’s much to see and plenty of variety.
SOUTHSEA SEAFRONT
T
he first port of call for most people taking a walk along Portsmouth’s coastline is the promenade along Southsea seafront. This three-mile route runs all the way from Old Portsmouth in the west to Eastney which is (as its name suggests) in the east. It’s an incredibly popular walking route the whole year round, offering almost uninterrupted sea views on a wide and wholly pedestrianised pathway. It’s along Southsea seafront that you’ll find a number of visitor attractions, too. There’s Clarence Pier, Blue Reef Aquarium, Southsea Castle, The D-Day Story and South Parade Pier, as well as a handful of restaurants dotted along the route and a few coffee houses just a short hop off it. For those looking to enjoy the route on two wheels rather than two feet, there’s a designated cycle path running along the road to make for a safe and enjoyable ride. 12
EASTNEY, MILTON AND LANGSTONE HARBOUR Round the corner from Portsmouth’s southern edge and you begin entering territory a little off the beaten tourist track. Here you will be blessed with equally stunning coastal views but without quite so many others around. The first point of note is Milton Locks Nature Reserve, along the shore at Lock Lake. At the shallows here you can see a number of wading birds and other wildlife, including oystercatchers, curlews and common lizards. PORTSMOUTH The Great Waterfront City
Follow the path northwards to reach Milton Common, a semi-natural expanse of grassland and gorse that makes it easy to forget you’re still in a city. There are various tracks and paths wending their way through the common, or you can stick to the coastal walkways, which have recently been replenished to provide greater flood protection to the nearby homes and businesses. This coastal walkway will take you out of Milton Common and onwards to the north of the city, following the Eastern Road past the Andrew Simpson Watersports Centre and Tudor Sailing Club along the way.
HILSEA LINES
THE INDUSTRIAL WEST
THE MILLENNIUM PROMENADE
A favourite spot among locals, Hilsea Lines (including an area colloquially referred to as Foxes Forest) is the best place to get some real countryside in the city. The route, which runs along Portsea Island’s entire northern edge, offers two main pathways that are physically very close to one another but couldn’t be more different. The northernmost route is open and elevated, offering views of Portsbridge Creek, the various small lakes, and out to the mainland. Alternatively the southern pathway is almost entirely underneath the tree canopy, where shaded, rural tracks prove popular with dog walkers and cyclists alike.
A walk along Portsmouth’s west coast may not have the rural beauty of some other routes, but it provides a fascinating insight into the city’s naval and transport pedigree. It’s here you’ll find Portsmouth International Port, which carries millions of passengers each year and services more destinations than any other port in the UK.
From the Dockyard area you can find your way back to Southsea seafront quickly and easily thanks to the Millennium Promenade. This two-mile route stretches from the Dockyard to Gunwharf Quays, around Old Portsmouth and then on to Southsea seafront. It couldn’t be easier to follow, as the whole route is marked by a chain motif set into the pavement. There are also numerous information boards along the way, detailing points of interest or areas that played a pivotal role in Portsmouth’s history.
A walk from east to west will bring you out near South Coast Wakepark, where you re-join the paved walking and cycling route alongside Hilsea Bastion Gardens towards the sporting hotspot of Alexandra Park.
Walk on a little further and you’ll be greeted by the extensive Dockyard wall, which separates the city at large from the naval docks. Keep alongside this and you’ll reach the entrance to Portsmouth Historic Dockyard and The Mary Rose, where you can while away hours looking back through Britain’s naval might over hundreds of years.
It should take no longer than one hour to walk the Millennium Promenade, though it may be worth leaving a fair bit of extra time to enjoy the shops, pubs, restaurants, coffee shops and attractions that can be found along its length.

CHARLES DICKENS
A love for all seasons SUPER SPRING
S
pring is the ideal time to book a weekend city break. Not only are the evenings getting longer and the cold winter temperatures starting to break, there’s also a glut of bank holidays – giving you that little bit of extra time to enjoy your time away. In Portsmouth, spring is also a great time to discover some of the city’s cultural heritage. The Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum is a great place to start, as it begins welcoming visitors for the new season in April. Here you can see the home where one of Britain’s most wellloved authors was born – as well as some of the artefacts he would go on to own. 14
The literary connections continue over at Portsmouth Museum, where the entire ground floor has been given over to another famous resident: Sir Arthur Conan Doyle. The writer was living and working just a stone’s throw from what is now the museum when he first came up with his truly iconic ‘consulting detective’, Sherlock Holmes. See an original manuscript and a first edition of the famous Beeton’s Christmas Annual, then take a look through some of the museum’s other exhibits, showcasing Portsmouth’s history through paintings, sculpture, artefacts and more. Both the Portsmouth Museum and Charles Dickens’ Birthplace Museum are great all-weather attractions – making them perfect options even if you get a few spring showers. If the weather’s more agreeable, take a trip to Southsea Castle, the fortification of notorious King Henry

VIII. After taking a walk around the Castle to learn about its history (such as the fact that the town of Southsea was named after the castle and not the other way around) you can step out onto the ramparts for views of the city and sea. If you need a rest after all the exertions, have a drink or bite to eat at the on-site Courtyard Café, or take some craft ale away with you from the on-site microbrewery.
SUMMER BY THE SEA It wouldn’t be summer without a trip to the seaside – and Portsmouth pulls out all the stops to ensure visitors have plenty to see and do. The city’s biggest event comes in the form of Victorious Festival – which takes over Southsea Common and the surrounding areas over the August bank holiday weekend. You can expect to see some of the biggest names in music across the
HMS VICTORY
three-day bash (last year’s acts included Paul Weller, The Prodigy, Paloma Faith, Years & Years, The Libertines and Brian Wilson, plus plenty more), not to mention a whole host of family-friendly entertainment. Summer is also an ideal time to explore the city’s enthralling naval heritage at Portsmouth Historic Dockyard. Attractions don’t get much more interactive than this, as you can take a walk on board iconic ships from history, including HMS Victory and HMS Warrior 1860. Kids are sure to love the frequent goings on throughout summer, as well as the fun things to do inside Action Stations – including Laser Quest, a climbing wall and Sky Tykes play area. www.visitportsmouth.co.uk
A summertime visit wouldn’t be complete without a trip up the Emirates Spinnaker Tower. From the 100-metre viewing decks you can expect to see views of up to 23 miles showcasing city, coast and country. Here you can also enjoy a (very) high tea, or use the latest VR technology to experience what it would be like taking a walk out on the tower’s struts. Alternatively, face a real whiteknuckle activity by experiencing freefall with The Drop, or abseil 100 metres down the side of the landmark. After all that you’re sure to need replenishments, and thankfully Gunwharf Quays is nearby with its myriad bars, restaurants and coffee shops to enjoy. 15
ALL ABOUT AUTUMN The crowds may thin out as summer gives way to autumn, but the things to see and do continue apace – with little sign of letting up. The start of autumn remains butterfly season at Portsmouth Natural History Museum, so take the opportunity to see these beautiful creatures on the wing whilst you have the chance. The museum’s spectacular Butterfly House is a must for all ages, with various neotropical species enjoying the perfect conditions recreated in their greenhouse. From here you can enjoy a scenic walk along Southsea seafront, passing by not one but two piers. South Parade Pier to the east and Clarence Pier at the west offer great views, entertaining arcade games and traditional funfair rides. Continue your walk along to Old Portsmouth and you’ll reach an area full of fascinating history. Back in the 17th and 18th centuries, the old Spice Island was where you’d find various ne’er-do-wells and a fair share of the city’s sin. Today the area couldn’t be more different – with Portsmouth’s most affluent quarter now thronging

WINTER AT THE WATERFRONT Some coastal seaside towns and cities pretty much shut down during the winter months – but not Portsmouth. GUNWHARF QUAYS
From Old Portsmouth it’s a short walk along the Millennium Promenade to Gunwharf Quays, the waterfront outlet shopping centre where some of the biggest names in fashion, homeware and beauty offer 60% off RRP. The centre also boasts scores of bars and restaurants, plus a contemporary art gallery, bowling alley and 14-screen cinema – meaning there’s plenty to keep you entertained long after the shops close.
The Mary Rose is one such museum that’s near the top of most visitors’ to-do lists – and rightly so. Whatever the weather you can enjoy a glimpse into Tudor life, not just through the ship itself but the hundreds of artefacts rescued alongside it. There’s something for all ages and interests; you can try your hand at the types of longbow that would have been prevalent on The Mary Rose, or even get to grips with real objects from Tudor times that still have their original smell. If your timing is just right, you can twin a visit to The Mary Rose with the dockyard’s Victorian Festival of Christmas, where the whole area comes alive with festive stalls, characters and even a real reindeer or two. Numerous other Christmas events take place in the lead up to the big day, so take a look at the listings on www.visitportsmouth.co.uk before your journey to see what’s going on during your visit. For a look into more modern history, be sure to visit The D-Day Story on Clarence Esplanade. This immensely popular museum has recently benefitted from a £5 million transformation, so it’s now better able than ever before to tell the personal stories of those involved in the epic Normandy Landings. With 2019 being the 75th anniversary of D-Day, keep your eyes peeled for special commemorative events taking place across Portsmouth throughout the year.
