Spring

Top tips for moving more Get up and get going We all like our telly, our computer games and our phones. But it’s good to get away from screens now and again. Pop out for a walk, take the children to the park or get the family together for some indoor fun (see www.nhs.uk/ change4life for ideas).

Make activity part of your daily routine

Spring is here and it’s a great time for being more active. Over the next five pages we’ve got some great tips for shaking off the winter blues.

Can’t face exercise or too busy? It doesn’t have to be an extra chore. If your journey to work or school isn’t too long, it can be fun to try walking, cycling or running, or use a scooter or rollerblades. It may not even add much more time to your trip. Portsmouth is flat and compact, so getting around in a more active way isn’t a big deal for most of us. Be imaginative – get off the bus a few stops earlier than you need and enjoy a 10-minute stroll, or use the stairs instead of a lift.

Explore where you live Try out our leisure and sports facilities. Search events, parks and what’s on at www.portsmouth.gov.uk and find more things to do in our Out & About section (pages 9–12) or at www.visitportsmouth.co.uk

How being active helps ff You’ll reduce your risk of heart disease, diabetes, stroke and cancer, and strengthen your muscles and bones. ff You’ll reduce your risk of stress, depression and dementia, and boost your mood and self-esteem. ff You’ll improve your sleep and boost your energy. Plus, group activities can improve your communication, leadership and social skills. Hop on your bike We’re working with British Cycling, the national governing body, to get more of us out and about on two wheels. A city bike ride on closed roads will take place later this year. We’re also working together on new cycle routes and more events, like guided rides around the city. These will range from an easy three miles to challenging longer distances, with trained ride leaders. We hope to launch these in July. Cycling makes sense because most everyday trips are less than a mile, and living in a flat city means getting to places by bike is even easier. Plus, cycling is relatively cheap, and it’s one of the easiest ways to fit exercise into your day. It’s also a great boost for cardiovascular health.

Still need convincing? ff There’s no dress code. Choose head-to-toe Lycra, or a dress and heels – anything goes. ff It doesn’t cost much to keep your bike in good condition. If yours has seen more cobwebs than roads, go for a check at the community cycle hub on Winston Churchill Avenue. ff Warmer days ahead mean cycling is even more fun. ff It’s a low-impact exercise, easy on your joints.

More info: ff Search cycling at www.portsmouth.gov.uk ff British Cycling guided rides: www.goskyride.com ff CTC, the national cycling charity: www.ctc.org.uk ff Sustrans – cycle routes near you: www.sustrans.org.uk ff Community cycle hub: www.myjourneyportsmouth.com ff More details about this year’s city bike ride and Sky Ride Local guided rides will be released shortly. To get updates when available please email james.roberts1@portsmouthcc.gov.uk

Safety improvements To improve cycle safety in the city, we’re tackling priority areas. Drivers and cyclists will see alterations to London Road, Kingston Road and Fratton Road, with the introduction of markings to make motorists more aware of cyclists. These will include priority markings for cyclists at junctions.

How active should we be? Being more active doesn’t have to mean playing team sports or spending hours at the gym. Anything that gets your heart rate going for longer than 10 minutes at a time is worth doing. Being active is important for all ages too. Children get similar health benefits as adults from exercise, plus it helps their growth and development. And being active as a child lays down the foundations of a healthy adult lifestyle. Being active helps to build up a child’s bones and develops their motor skills. It also helps to improve communications skills and develop qualities like co-operation, leadership and negotiation. The easiest way to keep kids active is through play. “Whatever the weather, play together” is a good saying for families to remember. Here’s what the NHS says we need to do to stay healthy: babies – should be active from birth, including tummy time and learning to roll over, reaching, grasping and crawling under-fives – children who can walk should be active for at least three hours throughout the day, including indoor and outdoor play five to 18 year-olds – should have at least an hour of activity every day adults – should have at least two and a half hours of activity a week

Get checked out The NHS Health Check is a free test for people aged between 40 and 74, who don’t have a known medical problem. It involves checking your height, weight, blood pressure and cholesterol, and asking a few lifestyle questions. It’s a bit like having an MOT. If any problems are noticed, then you’ll get advice on changes you can make or medication you can take. This will prevent or delay the problems turning into bigger concerns. See www.pompeyhealthchecks.com or contact your GP or pharmacist.

Let’s go for a walk Regular walking can be a great way of being more active. Going for a stroll with other people can lift your mood and boost your circle of friends. Walking can also improve your fitness, help you lose weight, reduce your blood pressure and lower your risk of heart disease and diabetes.

Fun exercise if you’re older There are daytime classes for mature movers all over the city, reasonably priced and held in local community centres or church halls. Maybe your doctor has recommended you get more active, or you need to improve your strength and balance to reduce your risk of having a fall. Or perhaps you’re looking for a class with music you enjoy and can sing along to.

We run regular guided walks (see Out and About, pages 9-12) and have put together routes you can follow yourself. We also run free “healthy walks” for all abilities. There’s even a slow one lasting just 30 minutes for people recovering from illness or injury, with lots of sit and rest stops. Like many of the other walks, it ends with a chat in a café. For more information on walks: ff search walks at www.portsmouth.gov.uk ff search Portsmouth at www.walkingforhealth.org.uk Contact our healthy walks scheme: ff Iwt@portsmouthcc.gov.uk ff 023 9284 1762

There are even classes with seated exercises, while others offer a chance to try tai chi. More info: ff put exercise diary in the keyword search box at www.healthwatchportsmouth. co.uk/services ff email Iwt@portsmouthcc.gov.uk ff call 023 9284 1762 and ask for the community exercise diary 6

Get shedding! Two new Men’s Shed groups – where men can socialise and share skills – are getting under way and looking for members. The Men’s Shed movement began in Australia, as a way of creating meeting places for men, usually older, who wanted to make new friends and get involved in community projects. There are now more than 1,000 sheds in Australia, and more than 80 have sprung up in the UK. The local groups, one in Portsea and one in Copnor, are being backed by the council. Members of the Portsea shed meet at St George’s Church community rooms, which they are renovating. They are there on Mondays, Wednesdays and Fridays, 10am to 12pm. The Copnor group meets at 12pm on Wednesdays, for about an hour, at Stacey community centre in Walsall Road. Members plan to build a shed in the grounds.

Technical college on its way

The city is to have its own university technical college, educating the engineers, inventors, scientists and technicians of tomorrow. Students aged 14 to 19 will study in a new “hands-on” way at the college, which will specialise in electrical and mechanical engineering and advanced manufacturing. It’s proposed that the UTC will share the City of Portsmouth Boy’s School site. UTCs involve employers through mentoring, work placements and projects for pupils. The college is backed by the Royal Navy, BAE Systems, Qinetiq, Airbus, Pall Europe and Ben Ainslie Racing. A bid for the college, led by the University of Portsmouth and the council, was approved by the government last month.

Lessons at the Black Country UTC, Walsall

David Williams, the council’s chief executive, said: “The UTC will provide Portsmouth with a tremendous educational asset and a centre for maritime, marine and advanced engineering training. Most importantly, it will give our young people the opportunity to develop their skills, aptitudes and readiness for work.”

Apprenticeships – just the job Being an apprentice means a chance to learn skills on the job, while still getting paid. It works for Alex Mingay, who’s an apprentice with the council’s housing team and is working towards a qualification in housing. Alex, 21, says being an apprentice has given him vital help in getting a permanent job.

“Being an apprentice has helped me gain lots of confidence and has given me invaluable experience and knowledge, which I would have struggled to get otherwise.” Alex’s manager, Maxine Jackson, said: “Apprentices are good for any business. It is a great way to bring new talent into an organisation and all our apprentices have exceeded our expectations.”

This will be very close to the shore. The racing is extremely fast-paced, with the boats reaching speeds of more than 50mph.

The event is the first stage of competition in the America’s Cup, which will continue until the finals in 2017. Sir Ben Ainslie, right, whose BAR team are building a new HQ in Old Portsmouth, said: “Our journey to bring the America’s Cup home starts this summer and it will be fantastic to compete on our home waters in Portsmouth. What you think of waste Thank you to everyone who took the time to complete our waste survey. We received more than 1,000 responses and here are some highlights.

ff Around 95% of you recycle paper, card, cans and plastic bottles in your green recycling bins at home. ff 96% of you are “very or fairly satisfied” with the rubbish service. ff 92% of you are “very or fairly satisfied” with the recycling service. ff The Portsmouth Recycling Centre received high satisfaction scores and you are mostly pleased with the range of things you can recycle there. ff The majority of you prefer to hear about your waste services through Flagship. ff You’re keen on having a glass collection from home in the future, and would like wheelie bins for your rubbish. ff You’d like to be able to recycle more types of plastics in your recycling bin at home. We’ll do our best to take on board all the comments given in our survey, but unfortunately sometimes there are reasons why we may not be able to act upon all of them straight away, such as cost or legislation. Well done to the five lucky winners of the £50 vouchers, who were randomly selected from the respondents.

Join our Green Waste Club Are you a member of the Green Waste Club? Since it was launched two years ago nearly 4,900 residents have signed up and more than 1,600 tonnes of garden waste has been turned into compost. The value-for-money service collects garden waste every fortnight. To join up visit www.greenwasteclub.co.uk or call 0800 0858 286.

Your Health, Your NHS

More responsibilities for CCG Our clinical commissioning group has taken over from NHS England the role of buying primary care services from all 24 GP practices in Portsmouth.

The first-ever Your Health, Your NHS event takes place in Portsmouth on Wednesday 10 June.

As patients, you probably won’t notice any difference at your local surgery.

The interactive event will feature a wide range of activities, giving you a chance to test your own health, meet NHS teams, and have a say on what you want from the local health service.

But the new arrangements will help us provide a far more joined-up approach to planning healthcare services.

You will be able to:

ff find out more about how healthy you are

We previously had around a £250m budget to commission services from acute hospitals such as Queen Alexandra, community and mental health services and prescribing. That’s about £30,000 every hour.

ff talk to groups and charities who could help you lead a healthier, happier life

But we will receive around another £25.5m a year for our new commissioning role.

ff tell local doctors what you want from primary care / GP services in the future

ff give your views on how the local NHS could improve. The day’s events will be based in the Guildhall and in Guildhall Square. The NHS, alongside representatives from across the voluntary sector, will be there in force from 11am to 6pm. Your Health, Your NHS is being organised by NHS Portsmouth Clinical Commissioning Group (CCG), with Portsmouth City Council and Healthwatch Portsmouth. Everyone is welcome. Keep an eye on www.portsmouthccg.nhs.uk or follow @PortsmouthCCG on Twitter for more details, and we hope to see you there. 18

It’s thanks to your support that it’s able to keep flying and to look at ways of continually improving its service. The scheme will cover a stretch of coast from Tipner to Milton Common, and will take about 10 years to complete.

Paths along the coast will also be improved and the area planted with species chosen to enhance the local habitat.

It’s designed to reduce the risk of coastal flooding and erosion over the next 100 years to more than 4,200 homes and nearly 500 businesses.

The scheme has been awarded almost £44m from the Environment Agency. It’s being run by the Eastern Solent Coastal Partnership on behalf of the council. A scheme for Southsea seafront is also being developed.

Work has started on one section of coastline, running from the Ports Creek railway bridge at Hilsea to Kendall’s

New homes with extra care Would you or someone you know benefit from living in an apartment with 24-hour care and support available? Our latest extra-care housing development, Maritime House in Hilsea, is opening this month. It has 80 purpose-built apartments to help people live independently in their own homes, for as long as possible, with care and support always on hand if needed.

Artist’s impression of Maritime House

The new apartments are provided by Housing & Care 21 in partnership with the council. Other apartments are available at extra-care schemes already open in Landport, Milton and Portsea. To be eligible to apply for an extra-care apartment, you’ll need an assessment of your care needs by our adult social care team, and you’ll need to be on our housing register. For more information call adult social care on 023 9268 0810, or talk to your social worker.

Make sure you can vote You should have had a polling card sent to you earlier this month. If you didn’t, it’s probably because you aren’t registered to vote. That means you won’t be able to have your say in the national and local elections on 7 May. The electoral register is also used by credit reference agencies, so not being registered to vote can affect your credit rating. If you want to vote in the elections, you’ll need to register by 20 April. Registering is easy online: just go to www.gov.uk/register-to-vote As well as your name, address and date of birth, you’ll need to provide your national insurance number. Your number can be found on your national insurance card, or in official paperwork such as payslips, or letters about benefits or tax credits. As well as voting at a polling station, you can vote by post (apply by 21 April) or appoint someone to vote on your behalf (apply by 28 April). Search voting at www.portsmouth.gov.uk

Cancer coffee mornings

Where a University Degree in Business is not beyond your reach

There’s a new coffee morning for people affected by cancer at Central Library, on the first Wednesday of the month from 10am to 2pm.

Our part-time Business and Management Degree is designed for busy working people and is available one evening a week from Chichester College, Isle of Wight College and South Downs College in Waterlooville.

If you’re getting treatment for cancer, have had cancer in the past, or are caring for someone with cancer, then do come along to the Macmillan information pod on the first floor.

It is open to those who may not have formal qualifications but whose work experience will have prepared them to succeed.

It’s open to anyone who might welcome an informal gathering where people can share thoughts and experiences over coffee and cake.

To find out more about the flexible part-time courses we offer, come along to our next open evening, details of which can be found at www.port.ac.uk/ For further information pbsevents. visit:

Friends around the globe

As part of our series about Portsmouth’s links with cities around the world, we look at our bond with Caen in France.

The Men’s Abbey, Caen. Image: www.calvados-tourisme.com

Our ties with Caen were strengthened when ferry services started between Portsmouth and the Normandy port. On 5 June 1987 a document was signed in the Guildhall, Portsmouth and in the Hotel de Ville, Caen the following day, formally declaring that the two cities would foster exchanges and meetings in all fields, including commerce and social pursuits. Each year the Lord Mayor of Portsmouth visits Caen to lay wreaths at the D-Day commemoration ceremonies. The Mayor of Caen also pays regular visits to Portsmouth. Many individual links between Portsmouth and Caen have been achieved, particularly in sport, leisure, tourism and culture, as well as in economic activities and business. The Portsmouth-Caen Friendship Committee maintains official contacts, and organises and facilitates many cultural, educational and sports projects each year. Twinning and sister city links are supported, but not funded, by the council. Search twinning at www.portsmouth.gov.uk

The club, which provides reduced-rate accommodation and respite holidays for current and former members of the armed services, is the first charitable organisation in the city to sign up for the Super Connected broadband connection grant scheme. General manager John Alderson said: “Nowadays most of our hotel guests, conference delegates and club users use at least one device that requires an internet connection. Many have two or three devices. We have to move with the times and we have to adapt, change and invest to ensure we can have a strong future.
