Where I Left Off Over the past few weeks I have been developing the typeface into a more refined and practical form. After developing the poster I was more confident in the work and was able to have more fun with the projects themselves. Experimenting and understanding more how Eiko Ojala works and how his artwork is meticulously made.

The Artwork of Eiko Ojala Opening Event January 30th, 2015 Pace Gallery 508 West 25th Street New York, NY, 10001 Tickets: $35.00 (888) 867-5309

Catalyst The final catalyst was another entertaining one. It was interesting having four opinions going into one small Zine. We basically left it up to curiosity and fate to see what would happen if we applied techniques and colours together. I was beginning to think about how a magazine is set up and how I wanted to present my booklet. In the end we were all happy with our little books and was looking forward to the project.

Artwork for Book The next step was to select artwork for the overall aesthetic of the booklet. The two I narrowed down to was an editorial work for Scientific American Mind entitled “Amnesia” and cover art for Langenud tähtede hõõg. I liked the colours and the idea that I could peel back the layers of the artwork in the booklet. So I decided to test both and see which one would work best in print.

Test and Process for Editorial For the editorial I decided the best route to go was to Photoshop the layers back so that as you’re going through the booklet you are diving further into the artwork. The process for this one was longer since photoshopping the images took the majority of the time. In the end I felt that while I liked the aesthetic it wouldn’t really hold up in a gallery space and felt a little more like a retail book about the artwork than a gallery event booklet.

Test and Process for Cover I decided to use the shape of the blob as the theme throughout the booklet. Layering it over top of the images and having the type float around the outline of the blob. The process went quicker for this one since it was more layout oriented. In the end I liked this one more for the final piece since it had more of a sophisticated look. I just had to fix the terrible river and the column layout so it wasn’t as messy.

What to put in the Booklet. Now came the part to actually decide what went in and how it was going to look. The picture of the artist is definitely a must in the book. I also decided to add two pieces of work, one based around architecture, and another simple and stunning that would best show off the types of shadows he creates. I also discovered the typeface I had been using had a Slab version of it so I decided to keep things connected and to go with Roboto Slab.

Roboto Slab Serif. Lorem Ipsum dolor sit amet.

Final Deliverable The final deliverable was a bundle of emotions. Mainly anger. The printing did not go as planned and the work had a few flaws that I was rather upset with. I am happy with the overall results and I think it does work for the artist and the typeface. I do think I would like to go back and refine it further so it becomes a part of my portfolio.

La Fin.
