Catalyst Work
In the final catalyst of the semester, we were able to do whatever we wanted with an old piece of ours. As a class we passed around our work and went to town creating new work out of other students work with different mediums. It was a good exercise to understand what we like to do and how we make our marks. It got me to think more about what I prefer to use and what I tend to think about when I have no restrictions.
Inspiration
I decided that my final Component would be based around escapism. Which refers to where our mind goes to escape reality, some people read, watch movies, daydream, imagine, or create things to escape from the dull and rather average lives many of us live. I was looking around for articles to read and to learn as much as I could about escapism and was looking at images that I could personally relate to. I looked into what sort of places made me feel calm and that I relied on to escape reality and stress. What colours were there? What was the scenery? Was it warm or cold? By asking myself these questions I was able to narrow down exactly what I was thinking and why it made me feel calmer.
Secret Life of Walter Mitty The biggest influence I had on this project was the movie Secret Life of Walter Mitty. This movie hits home on such a personal level for me. I have often tried explaining what I do when I zone out and the closest thing I could come to was calling it directing. Then the trailer for this film came out and I knew that this was a movie that I could closely relate to. The over the top dramatic escape is exactly how I sometimes see my world. This movie is exactly how I feel when I’m stuck. I feel like I need to just jump on a plane and just go. However since I’m a rather timid person I usually just direct it in my art and imagination.
Silk Screening
The first thing I knew when I started this project was that I wanted to silk screen. No matter what the project was about it was going to be done in silk screen. Silk screening to me is one of those passions that I am by no means very great at, but I love the process and the mistakes. I always find myself happier when I’m silk screening. So going back to this process helped put me into my “happy place” and helped me to experiment more with styles, methods and mixing styles. It was very messy but my gosh was it fun.
More Process...
Afterwards After I was finished with silk screening I had that feeling of “Okay, now what? which worried me a bit since the project was due in under a week at the time. So after talking it over with my professor and a few colleagues I decided to use micron pens and add drawn elements over top of the screens. It added an interesting effect to it, almost having a translucent effect over the paint which added to the feel of these worlds not being real and attainable.
Final Deliverable I am incredibly happy with the results. I decided to turn the better prints into story panels to help create a narrative around the pieces. This project helped me better understand what escapism means and how it personally affects me. As long as it doesn’t consume a persons entire life its okay to escape to these places where you can have adventures and feel as if you are truly free as well as happy. In fact it can help drive a person to make bold decisions and help escape from routine and the boredoms of an average life.
