TULA TROOPS UNITE!
This quilt princess is back to delight, entertain and inspire us to add a little color to our world. Tula is most recognized in the industry for her dark sense of humor, a flair for hiding animals in the strangest of places (artistically, not literally) and her boldly unique use of color and pattern. Tula comes from the "more is more" school of design where there is never enough space and always room for that one last thing. We think that school is pretty dang awesome! This time around Tula will be sticking around a bit longer for your sewing pleasure! Join her for an EPP class, a “Tula Sew-In” and a fun, informative and entertaining lecture and signing. In an ongoing effort to make Quiltique your number one place for sewing education, we have some seriously exciting news for everyone! Want a hint…NO MORE CANCELED CLASSES! And that is not all… See page 3 for more exciting news in classes.
Letter from the Editor The last week of summer [sigh]. Well, I mean, the last week of summer vacation before “Back to School”, but that always makes me feel like summer is ending. Truth is, the heat is going nowhere fast here in Las Vegas and there is plenty of summer left here, but that never stops us from moving into our fall classes and events. I have to tell you that I am almost afraid there are too many awesome things to do in the next four months here at the shop. The schedule is packed with choices! Even though we have a line-up of amazing events this fall, I am most excited about the changes to our regular class schedule. We are super excited to tell you that Quiltique will no longer cancel regular classes taught by our local teachers. NO CANCELED CLASSES! That means no more disappointment that a class that you really were looking forward to is not going to happen…IT WILL! Zero sign-ups within two weeks of the class date will be the only reason a class gets removed, so don’t wait until the last minute. But you may just get lucky and end up with a private lesson! In addition to that great news, we have also added a brand new division to our class line-up – Garments! Sewing your own clothes is a huge trend right now, with a growing number of independent garment designers making quality and fashionable patterns for us home sewists. Wouldn’t it be awesome to shop locally for your own fabric, make your own garment with your two hands, and get that great feeling … that sense of accomplishment from being able to actually wear what you made! If you are only making quilts or bags and not considering garments, you have only covered a portion of what you could be doing with your sewing machine. Lastly, after a lot of arm twisting, Tula is coming back! A Tula Troop at heart, I personally can’t wait for her return. If you missed her lecture in 2014, this is your chance to sew with a woman who is pretty much as close to a sewing rock star as you can get (at least in our eyes). Oh and very lastly, BERNINA Academy should definitely make the “short” list for your choices this fall. We came back pumped about this event from Bernina U. this summer. It is such a well-rounded sewing event, that everyone will leave feeling so much closer to perfecting their “craft”. Fear No Fabric! We look forward to creating with you this fall. EXCITING CHANGES FOR CLASSES!
We have some news about our education program that we think you will like! First and foremost, the biggest change is to our class policy. Quiltique will no longer cancel classes due to low sign ups. Yep, that’s right! Now, even if we have just one student enrolled… the class is a go! No more purchasing supplies or preparing for class, only to be disappointed that we didn’t get enough students. You alone are enough! Going forward, classes will only be canceled if we have had zero registrations two weeks prior to the class’ scheduled date. Win! Win! In other exciting class news, we have three new GARMENT teachers added to our talented teacher line-up along with five new garment classes. Please help us welcome, Mary Ann Racheau, Cynthia Rae and Twila Taylor into our classroom! These talented ladies have many years of experience in garment sewing and each bring their own unique talents to us. You will find on page 15, a two session Garment Sewing Basics class with Mary Ann, with a follow up Pajama Pant class to use your new skills. Also a Serger Basics class with Cynthia to get you using that serger that needs dusting off in the back of your closet, and a Leggings class to follow up on the oh-so-popular fashion trend (that you should be making instead of buying) and finally a very useful and practical class on Pant Hems with Twila teaching you what you need to know to hem pants you already own (and so you can stop paying a tailor!) We are just getting started…many more fun and educational garment classes are coming in 2018, so start building you skills now so that you can advance right along with us. RULER WORK QUILTING
Piecemaking Basics, Intro to Machine Quilting and Bindings are NECESSARY for learning basic quilting skills and it is recommended that you take them, in order, before continuing to any other quilting class. Please be aware that cutting, quilting and binding skills will not be covered in any quilting classes beyond these basics. “Ruler Work” is the use of specialized quilting rulers to create accurate, repeatable designs. Create straight lines, curved lines, scallops, waves, while free-motion quilting with the use of these rulers. While ruler work is traditionally done on a Longarm machine, it can now be done on your domestic machines as well. PIECEMAKING BASICS Pre-requisite for all other quilting classes if you have never quilted before. We will start you on your journey into the joys of quilting! BERNINA MASTERY These classes are open to any BERNINA Sewing Machine owner. Registration is necessary as class size is limited. Cancellation calls are appreciated as this allows another student to fill that space. There are workbook and sample kit fees for each mastery class. The class instruction fee is FREE if your machine was purchased at Quiltique. If you purchased your BERNINA elsewhere, we welcome you to our classes but there is a fee. EVENTS IN FULL SWING... WOOLY BLOCK ADVENTURE… Begins October 16th! While Wooly Block Adventure is not a new event, we are now a WBA Participating Shop! This year, Quiltique will be a new stop for you on your WBA travels. What is this event you might ask? Well, you are familiar with the summertime event, Row by Row Experience right? This is almost the same, just for wool blocks instead of cotton rows. The Wooly Block Adventure is to wool what Row by Row Experience is to cotton! There are a few differences and also some changes to the program this year, but here are the basics: – Theme for 2017 is “Harvest Basket”. – Visit participating shops from October 16 thru December 15 to collect your FREE 8” wool block pattern. Can’t visit the shop in person?
