Hints & Tips Essential oils lose their therapeutic properties if they are heated. Allow your carrier to cool before adding your oils. Citrus oils can eat through plastic, so use glass containers and metal rollers, as opposed to plastic, if you are using citrus oils. Citrus oils and bergamot are also photosensitive, so keep your bottles in a cool, dark place and exercise caution when applying these oils before going out into the sun. Coconut oil is solid at room temperature, but it liquefies when heated over 70 degrees. You can whip it into a fluffy butter, or gently heat it to mix into your balms. It is a very versatile and beneficial oil, but it is high on the comedogenic scale, meaning it can clog your pores.

Basic Body Butter 1/2 c shea butter 1/4 c coconut oil 1 tsp beeswax Gently heat the ingredients above until they are liquefied. (Too much heat will reduce or eliminate the therapeutic benefits of the essential oils.) Cool in refrigerator, back to room temperature. Add essential oils Whip with electric mixer until desired consistency is reached. Use spatula to put the body butter into the container.
