Starting a Business

as a Mompreneur by Kalanit Lagbas

Picture this: You’re a mom with demands coming from every direction. You long for something. One day a small voice competes with the day to day noise saying, hey! Remember me? So you think.

And then... You decide to start a business.

You’ve never started a business before. You have an amazing idea and know exactly what you want to do, but don’t have a clue how to get started. Or maybe you have already started and feel disorganized. You may even start questioning and asking yourself the ‘what if?’s: What if it fails? What if it becomes too overwhelming? What if I can’t? Sure those thoughts are totally normal, but they don’t get you anywhere. Think on the positive side instead; Lay a foundation of confidence that will aid you when you feel like falling.

I mention very little sleeping? Being a mompreneur requires one hundred and ten percent when we only have fifty to give. So how do moms do it? How do we navigate juggling our family, home, and business all at the same time? There’s no right answer, but i know for me it takes disciplined time management and organizational skills.

One thing that frustrated me when starting our business was that the information needed was scattered all over the internet hidden under ads. As busy moms, we don’t have time for that. Use allotted time blocks throughout the day so you can give one You can do it. Millions of women do it hundred and ten percent to your business everyday. Yes it will be hard and you’ll put and still gain control of the other parts of life. in hours upon hours with no relief. Did It’s possible to get through it, by networking

and connecting with other small business owners. Listen and learn from their success and failure. Be pragmatic, start slow and only speed up when you know you can handle it. Is everyday perfect? No. Do I follow my own rules everyday? No. Am I that perfect mom that I picture in my head. Nope! I have two children under the age of three, so most days are chaotic. So what are the steps to building a business? Or what steps can be taken to become more organized?

Have a plan!

Write down your ideas. Find a name. Research what kind of business you want to be. Write a business plan. File with your Secretary of State. File with Federal Government - IRS Get an EIN number. Finance Choose a domain name and hosting site. Set up your website. Set up a business bank account. Look into accounting software. Set up CRM or business related software. Set up social media accounts. Consult with an accountant & lawyer Draft Contracts and other important business documents. Get important documents notarized. Hire employees or contractors Stock product Have a glass of wine.

Building a business from the ground up is no easy task and I have nothing but respect for the many women who are doing the same thing and supporting one another in the process.

The Holiday season is supposed to be all about spending time with friends and family, celebrating new and old traditions, and sitting around a table full of food while laughing with the people you love. But it does not always play out that way. 12 Motivated Mompreneurs

Tis the season of high-stress levels and coffee by the gallon. The holidays are such an overwhelming time of the year for your home and business, and that festive magic we idolize on Pinterest is accompanied by unorganized chaos, stress, and messes! Does the thought of the Holidays around the corner have you feeling less than merry? Keep your family and business organized and stress-free during the Most Wonderful Time of the Year with these tips from the Brittany & Co. Consulting team!

Prepare Ahead of Time Make a list, and check it twice! Lists will be your best friend this Holiday season. Create running lists for everything from gift purchasing, wrapping and shipping, holiday parties, events, meal prepping, and travel schedules, to marketing plans, client projects, tasks, and...well, you get the hint. LISTS = SANITY. Using a tool like Trello will allow you to create checklists and keep track of due dates, finances, and more! Prepare your lists now so that you can stay on top of the chaos later.

Set Boundaries You are allowed to say no! Crazy, right? Societal pressures say we have to go to all the activities and all the parties, buy all the gifts, take on all the clients, and complete all the tasks. But I am here to tell you that you can put your foot down. Set boundaries and decide what is most important to you and your family. Do not put the added pressure on yourself to do #AllTheThings that just lead to more stress and headaches. For your business, only focus on revenue-generating tasks during times of chaos and pick up the rest at the turn of the New Year. Motivated Mompreneurs 13

Set Routines Back-to-back holiday events and changes to our normal routine can shake us up and add to the stress of our daily lives. If you don’t already have a routine, start one now to establish stability during the chaos of the holidays. It may not always be realistic to stick to your routine during this time of year, but creating a morning and evening plan can help keep consistency in you and your family’s schedule. Business routines and consistency are the things that move your business forward, so it is imperative to map out your days ahead of time, create a checklist of repeating tasks, batch your days and stick to your plan.

Schedule Downtime While you are planning your schedule over the Holidays, leave some space for self-care and downtime for your family. You need time to relax and cherish those small Holiday moments with your family and friends. That time is an essential part of setting yourself up for personal and professional success after the New Year.

Trello Get things done without getting overwhelmed with a project management tool. I mentioned Trello earlier, but this is a tool you can not afford to live without. This is a free online app that will manage and organize your daily household and business operations!

Let Go and Relax Take a deep breath and grab that carton of eggnog, sister! There will be times when tasks don’t get check off your daily to-do list, you burn the apple pie, or you forget to buy your 4th cousin’s dog a gift. It will be okay! Remember what is most important about the Holidays, and let go of the crazy high expectations. A chaotic home filled with love and laughter is so much more fulfilling than the stress that comes from recreating the perfect Pinterest Holiday.

Focus on the Spirit of the Season This tip may be last, but it is probably the most important one. The Holidays may mean a lot of different things to different people, but no matter what your beliefs, it is a time of celebrating, giving to others, being thankful for all that we have, and spreading that Holiday magic that can only be found this time of year. Don’t let the Holidays run you, and truly make it the most wonderful time of the year. Click here for more information about Brittany Dixon 14 Motivated Mompreneurs

Yet, the good news is that it doesn’t take much to break the cycle of overwhelm if you have been experience stress under six months. Longer than six months means you’re dealing with chronic stress and overwhelm and that’s a much bigger issue.

Four Surprising Myths

About Digital Nomads by April Lewis

Digital nomad, location independent, telecommuter… all these terms mean one thing to me. Freedom. Bet you weren’t expecting that answer, were you? It’s true though. In today’s digital economy where the interwebz rule everything, there’s a new breed of the self employed. And it would surprise you the myths I could dispel about them. Matter of fact… let’s go down that rabbit hole together as we uncover four surprising myths about digital nomads.

26 Motivated Mompreneurs

www.MotivatedMompreneurs.com

Myth #1

Digital nomads travel continuously.

I think most people are mistaken in that they think a digital nomad lives SOLELY out of a backpack and is only in a location for a couple days, has a pair of kicks for shoes, only showers everything three days, uses dry shampoo, and is as aimless and unmotivated as your favorite 1970’s free spirit. And there ARE some digital nomads who are a true nomadic being. But the majority of us like the comforts of home AND the community of home way too much to let them go entirely. Most self employed digital nomads I know have a home base they frequently visit. They maintain close relationships with friends and family through technology. And build long lasting friendships within the communities they visit, too. They live like the world is their community, without borders and limits. I’m part of a group of digital nomad that has a goal to visit all the national parks in the US. I feel like we have plenty of beautiful, amazing people and places to see in our own backyards, without traveling to international destinations. Others, only want to go places a passport can take them. Some travel all over a continent at a time, like traveling from the top of Alaska to the bottom of South America. There are so many options… for every discerning traveler. And each of them choose how often, how long, and how far they travel to meet their personal goals.

Myth #2

All digital nomads flock to Bali and set up shop near a beach whilst living amongst the locals.

Tell the truth, you’ve seen the social media highlight reels that show the life of the party living it up on an exotic beach, all day… every day. Or so it seems. Right? But that really couldn’t be rather from the truth. What IS true is that your ‘office’ can be anywhere your most efficient device can operate effectively. An internet cafe, coffee shop, the local library, a picnic table at a scenic overlook, a co-working space, the window seat at an AirBNB, poolside at an affordable motel, propped up in your camp chair outside your tent under the shade of an oak tree, sitting on the side of a mountain drop off with nothing but the wild west as my view… These are just a handful of the spots I’ve worked over the past year. The traditional view of ‘work’ has changed from the type of work we do, to where we can do it, and how we get it done. This is why being a digital nomad means freedom to me. I define all those parameters for myself. I use technology to open up a whole world of possibility and opportunity. www.MotivatedMompreneurs.com

Myth #3

Digital nomads are introverts or live extremely solitary lives.

Before I took my first trip, I’ll admit I was scared stupid. So scared I decided to take my 10 year old niece along while we traveled from Tennessee to California and back again. It was three weeks of bliss in the end. And not that the 10 year old could have helped me that much, she was a wonderful constant companion that helped my grown, scared self realize that I’m only a hello away from a friend. The same rules we learned growing up on the playground making friends… they work even today as an adult. I have a whole journal full of all the names of the people I’ve met along the way, their business cards with email addresses, and ‘virtual’ colleagues that I knew from the self employed ranks then met in real life whilst out traveling. I can go to any state, and a few countries, and a friend is within a few hours of me. I’ve hung out at Lake Tahoe with Elisabeth, my author friend, who taught me how to look at everyday Joe’s and Jane’s and try to pick out which one MIGHT be the surprise serial killer among us just by people watching. My buddy Sarah and I have made a habit of going to work conferences because it’s her job, as a flaming extrovert, to get me to step outside of my comfort zone and MEET people. And I’ve traveled all the way to Florida where my business coach is and enjoyed a day out on the intercoastal waterway via a pontoon boat while our kids looked for dolphins, alligators, and sharks… OH MY!

Myth #4

Digital nomads don’t plan anything or seem to have a sense of responsibility.

I beg to differ. I’d be willing to bet that MOST digital nomads, at least the ones I know, are more regimented than the average person. Yes, I’m serious. Just because we’re in the middle of Arches National Park doesn’t mean that our client launch is on hold whilst waiting for us to get back to work. That sales email sequence for my client isn’t gonna write itself before they have their national campaign kickoff with THE Martha Stewart’s photographer’s creatives while I’m hanging out at Alcatraz for the day. My famous Christian contemporary artists’ email newsletter won’t get scheduled every week just because I’m at the Fall Creek Falls basking in the rainbow of the prettiest waterfall Tennessee has to offer… NONE of this important client work for VIP’s on my client list would get done if I didn’t make a daily plan to rule the world, in business and in life. Most digital nomads I know are actually pretty early birds out on the road. Up and working between 4-6am, hard at it until lunch then off for the afternoon to enjoy the locale of the day. Sometimes they are done for the day by the noon hour. But sometimes after dinner they put in a little more time to wrap up before a fairly conservative bedtime. You put in 4 hard days like this, then you can play really hard for the other three days of the week. And that kind of discipline and reward is SO worth it for most of us. What we DON’T plan to a T is our travel, funnily enough. Myself in particular, I use an app called RoadTrippers. This lets me share my itinerary with family and friends and gives me a ‘guide’ as I go around certain sections of the country. That’s about as planned as the travel part of my digital nomading goes. But my breakfast, lunch, and dinner times… my production schedule for client work… my self care priorities… all the things that make me and my business tic, they go like clockwork on the road.
