Part I : Kite Project

Week 1 - Project Introduction & “The Big Idea
The purpose of this project is to create and build a kite that is conceptually able to fly which involved unlimit exploration of multilayered open space and structure that represent a rich spatial qualities , geometry, structure and reaction to nature, wind, light, sound and material.
4
Week 2 - Project Inspiration The gloass walls of the building is a layer of transparent structural shell within which the structural cores and tubes seamlessly build into elevators, stairs, fitting rooms and display shelves.

Week 4 - First Iteration
The first iteration of my model was build with Balsawood with assistance of glue gun. The half size scale (6” x 6” x 6”) cube gives endless opportunities to explore the frame and structures of the future “box kite”.

Pick a Form : Seeing System and Structure
13
Week 5 - Second Iteration The 2nd model iteration came with changing grid size of different surfaces and adding some tunnels between surfaces to create space and relationship from side to side.
14
Week 6 - Third Iteration The third iteration is a full size(12” x 12” x 12”) model. Despite the other benefits of using Basswood, it was easier to bend compared to Balsa wood. The model was twisted by the tension of cloth after adding a couple of tunnels.

Final Model - The Joint The finale model with full size (12” x 12” x 12”) was build with ¼” balsa wood.
The tunnel fabric is made from polyester nylon.

Part II : Kite Workshop Project
Kite Workshop Project
Site Analysis The site is located at the edge of Golden Gate Park and next to Haight-Ashbury. It is surrounded by main traffic. It is among quiet and busy, corner and center, historical and commercial. Inspired by the nature topography of the site, which is surrounded by trees and bushes with a pond in between, I would like my design to be more open and transparent. So it will attract more attention of public.

First few Iterations The first few design iterations of model was focus on the functionality of the building, which includes cinema, cafe and workshop.
32
Final Model The final model is consisted of four level building with a workshop platform between third and fourth level. From the entrance, which is located on the second floor, there are two stairs nearby. While the one leads the up way creates an open space for the atrium moving along to different levels to explore the exhibition, The one going down to lower level leads the way to the cafeteria and cinema. There are bathrooms, storage room embedded behind the cinema. And through the cafeteria, visitor can exit to the open space facing the pond.

Atriums
The atrium starts at the center of the cafeteria on the first floor, going up to the second floor.
36
From the second floor, the atrium goes up to the third level.
The “up route continues from the third floor to the fourth floor.
Atriums (continues)
From the fourth floor the atrium starts the “down” slope to the workshop area which is located on top of the cinema, is on the other side of the building between the third and fourth levels..
The atrium continues goes down from the workshop to the third floor.
On the third floor there is a separate route goes to the upper entrance of the cinema.
From the entrance of the cinema, visitor can either enter the upper level of the cinema or continue the “down” route to second floor and back to the entrance foyer through the long corridor.

Besides front and back window facade, a huge roof skylight window brings in more natural light to the building.
