Financial Assistance 101 Definitions of Financial Assistance
CTC Academic Tuition Waiver Program
There are three basic types of financial assistance available to CTC students:
For fall and spring semesters, the Community & Technical College offers tuition waivers to support student program completion/graduation.
Grants & Scholarships
Both are “Gift Aid” money that you do not have to earn by working and it generally does not need to be repaid. The difference is that grants are primarily based on financial need, while a scholarship is usually based, at least in part, on merit.
Tuition Waivers
This is a special type of scholarship. It is different from grants and scholarships because it only pays tuition and not fees or any other student expense.
Loans
This type of financial assistance must be repaid with interest by the student. The repayment is usually after the student leaves school or drops below half-time enrollment.
To be eligible for the CTC Academic TW Program, a student must meet the following requirements: • Undergraduate students only • Officially admitted to UAA for at least three credits and formally admitted into a CTC degree or certificate program • An Alaska resident • Maintain a minimum cumulative GPA of 2.8 at the time of application • Be in current satisfactory academic standing per the UA system policy: http://www.uaa. alaska.edu/financialaid/policies.cfm#CP_ JUMP_308974 To apply, download copies of the CTC Tuition application form and the Tuition Waiver form and follow the application guidelines on the CTC website. All forms are available online at www.uaa.alaska.edu/ctc. Hard copies can be requested from the CTC Dean’s office by calling (907)786-6400.

What does FAFSA mean? “The Free Application for Federal Student Aid (FAFSA) is a form that can be prepared annually by current and prospective college students (both undergraduate and graduate) in the United States to determine their eligibility for student financial aid (including the Pell grants, and work-study program).” -Wikipedia

If you are under the age of 24, unmarried, and without children, you will need both your parent(s) tax return, as well as your own. 4. Complete the FAFSA online. Alaska Advantage Student Loan
Complete Loan (Entrance) Counseling Online: www.uaa.alaska.edu/financialaid Every student applying for financial aid at UAA must complete “Loan Counseling” at the initial application for financial aid. Entrance counseling is an information session which takes place before a loan is disbursed and is required for first-time borrowers. The session explains your responsibilities and rights as a student borrower.
6
A promissory note is a binding legal document you sign when you get a student loan. 1. Click on “A to Z,” on the UAA website and then “Financial Aid.” 2. Click on “Financial Aid Checklist.” 3. Click on “Step 7.” Follow the online instructions to submit electronically.
After completion of your Application for Admission and the Financial Aid Application (FAFSA), your file will be reviewed by the UAA Office of Student Financial Assistance, and you could receive a financial aid offer. This offer will appear on your UA Online account (http://uaonline.alaska.edu/). If you have completed all of the preceeding steps, and the loan offer is not on your account, call the Financial Aid Office at (907) 786-1586 (option #2) to speak with a UAA Financial Aid counselor.
Students attending UAA (either Alaska residents or students from another state) may also apply for the State of Alaska (Advantage) student loan (www.uaa. alaska.edu/financialaid). Click on “Lender List” and then “Alaska Commission on Post-Secondary Education” and follow the links. The maximum amount that can be borrowed is $8,500 per academic year.
