The Holiday season is coming up— with it, the anticipation of delicious food, a cozy bed to sleep in, and lots of presents and candy. However, not everyone in our community—or our world— has the privilege of such a holiday season experience. As Halloween, Thanksgiving, Christmas, Hanukkah, Kwanzaa, or whatever holidays you celebrate draw near, please don’t forget that this is the prime time for service. Whether it’s trick-ortreating for UNICEF, creating turkey baskets, holding a holiday food drive, or providing presents for those who won’t have any, remember that you can make a difference in someone’s life this holiday season.

from your lieutenant governor Hello my dear Division, In the past month, I have had the privilege of visiting meetings of all eight clubs in our division. I can definitely say that club visits are one of my favorite parts of serving as your Lieutenant Governor— being able to experience firsthand the traditions of your different clubs as well as meet members from all around was truly remarkable. From the spirit of Hazen Key Clubbers, the friendliness of Renton, the impressiveness of Kentwood’s growth, the beloved traditions of my home club, Kentridge, to the hilarious personalities of Lindbergh, the dedication to caring at Kent-Meridian, the organization at Tahoma, and the great fun at Kentlake. Each and every one of you, every member, officer, and adviser— has something different and unique to offer to Key Club. You all continue to impress me with your firey Division 32 Dragon spirit and passion for service, and it is such an honor to serve you all. As the holiday season approaches, let’s get bundled up for Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF, holiday food drives, and festive DCMs! Once again, if you ever have any questions, comments, or concerns, I am yours in service.

In love and service,

Jenny Feng 4

Lieutenant Governor of Division 32 Pacific Northwest District of Key Club International Fengjenny.ltg32@gmail.com 425-444-4963

TREASURERS! A message from your district treasurer Hey Key Club Treasurers! This is Aneesh Pappu, your district treasurer. I hope you are all having a wonderful and productive school year and, for all you seniors, I hope that college applications are going well! We are currently in the midst of my favorite time of the year – dues season! Dues season runs until December 1st and is the time frame in which all clubs must submit dues in order to be a part of Key Club International. Although there are many service organizations aside from Key Club that do not require payments to join, there is no group that provides you with the same level of opportunities as we do. When you pay dues to join, you’re joining an international organization with ties and projects all over the world. Your dues provide you with the opportunity to fundraise for projects such as the Eliminate Project in order to cure deadly diseases around the world. The benefits don’t stop there however; joining Key Club provides you and your club with resources to succeed. As a paid member, you and your club immediately receive the benefits of district support ranging from the help of your Lieutenant Governor and District Executive Officers to the aid of the adult Kiwanians who support us in each and every endeavor we undertake. As we enter October a very important deadline for dues submission is arriving – Early Bird dues are due November 1st. Although it is not required to meet this deadline, submitting your club’s dues by this time comes with a myriad of benefits, including priority seating at DCON and an Early Bird patch for your club’s banner. In order to meet this deadline, each club must submit $12.50 per member for at least 15 members through the Membership Update Center (MUC), which can be found at www.keyclub.org/ MUC. If you have not logged into the MUC this school year yet, it is crucial that you sit down with your adviser, login, and begin the registration process. If you have any issues with login credentials, be sure to email memberservices@kiwanis.org and include me as well (apappu97@gmail.com). After the Early Bird deadline, the final deadline for dues submission is December 1st. Unfortunately, clubs who do not submit their dues by this date will be placed on delinquent status, which can eventually translate into suspended and even inactive statuses for clubs. In order to avoid this, I highly recommend that you finish the dues process as soon as possible! I am also always available to assist if you have any issues, so don’t hesitate to shoot me an email or Facebook message if you ever need to! Happy Dues Season! In Caring & Service, Aneesh Pappu Pacific Northwest District Treasurer Key Club International apappu97@gmail.com

A MESSAGE from your international trustee Hey, Pacific Northwest! My name is Tashrima Hossain, and I’d like to introduce myself as the new International Trustee for your district. It is such an honor to be in your service, primarily by ensuring that your voices are heard at the international level during the upcoming year. I’m excited to join the PNW moose; I’ve already received so much enthusiasm from the Board, I’ve heard many great things about PNW, and I can’t wait to see all the great achievements your district has in store. To let you know a little about myself, I am from Cypress, Texas, which is a suburban area adjacent to the Houston border. In addition to Key Club, I devote much of my time to debate and Student Council— which often leaves with very little time for sleep! As a result, I’m a bit of a grandma, and I like spending much of my free time sleeping, reading, or just hanging out with friends. For those of you who would like to know more about my duties as International Trustee, I have a few basic responsibilities: attending International Board meetings, participating in a maximum of two district visits, and acting as a representative of the international level of Key Club. In addition, Governor Lisa and I completed a Governor-Trustee agreement, which identified the main expectations Lisa has of me, as your district’s Trustee; many of said goals revolve around constant communication and building positive Sister District relations—all of which are means to ensure that I effectively represent your views on the international level. Additionally, I serve with Jenalee Beazley, Rip Livingston, Liz Moore, and Nicole Lema on the Growth and Communications Committee. There, we predominantly focus on fostering a connection between advisors and Kiwanis clubs, making Key Club a school-wide name, creating a “cool factor” for Key Club, empowering local clubs to publicize their work, creating a strategic growth plan for KCI, and creating an annual club census. We already have a very specific set of goals and action steps for the first quarter; I plan to update you all with any progress in that arena. During my term, I will stay committed to the goals I campaigned with, but more than that, I intend to actively serve as a resource for you all. If you have questions about amendments, elections, service, or general Key Club knowledge, please don’t hesitate to reach out to me. I’m here as a resource, friend, and assistant in any way you may need. Call me, email me, Facebook me— I’m always ready to lend a hand. Tashrima Hossain International Trustee Georgia, KIWIN'S, & Pacific-Northwest tashrima.hossain.kc@gmail.com

DID YOU KNOW? A proud participant in Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF since 1994, Key Club has raised more than US$6 million for child survival and development programs around the world—from efforts to eliminate iodine deficiency disorder to HIV/AIDS initiatives in Kenya and Swaziland. Starting in 2012 Key Club joined other Kiwanis Service Leadership Programs to Trick-or-Treat for UNICEF to raise money for The Eliminate Project.

Clubs that raise and submit more than US$250 by December 31, 2014, will receive a special banner patch. So don’t forget to send in the funds you raise by the deadline!

FUNDRAISING IDEAS: http://sites.kiwanis.org/Kiwanis/en/ theELIMINATEproject/SLP/TrickortreatforUNICEF/Fundraisingideas_TOT.aspx

Once you’ve collected all of your donations, send a check or money order (made payable to the Kiwanis International Foundation) and your completed gift form to: The Eliminate Project: Campaign Office Kiwanis International Foundation 3636 Woodview Trace Indianapolis, IN 46268 USA ATTN: Trick-or-Treat

12

Be sure to write your club name or club number on the memo line of the check.

On September 20th, the Division 32 Projects Committee, under the direction of Jessica Lou, worked hard to put Nickelodeon’s Worldwide Day of Play (WWDOP), our first fundraiser, into action! Starting off the day with a classic game of Capture the Flag, people from all around gathered to celebrate WWDOP. Afterwards, everyone had a BLAST with Bumble Bubble Soccer! We raised a total of $171 towards the Eliminate Project, enough to save the lives of 95 mothers and their future children! Congratulations to the Projects Committee, and thank you for your amazing dedication to service!

13

As the Division 32 DRAGONS, we make everything hot and TOASTY with our FIRE! How do we add this fire? By being exemplary Key Clubbers— by saving babies, by growing our clubs, by connecting with our K-Family, by promoting Key Club! If you’ll allow me the expression, et us TOAST our toast so that it can actually be toast! If we earn 1000 points by DCON, the Lieutenant Governor will be subject to “punishment”, and the division will get some kind of reward. (the specifics of that are to be decided later!) Additional ways to earn points may be added on along the way.

SEPTEMBER: 20 Points: DCM with at least 35 attendees 43 Points: Money raised for Eliminate 6 Points: Kiwanis Meetings 5 Points: All Presidents submitted reports by the 7th (late) 5 Points: All VPs submitted their reports by the 7th (late)

Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals (CMN Hospitals) is a nonprofit organization that raises money to benefit hospitalized kids while increasing awareness of its member hospitals. Key Club participates with Children’s Miracle Network Hospitals by sponsoring fundraising events. Key Club members also participate in service projects at their local children’s hospital. The mission of the March of Dimes is to improve the health of babies by preventing birth defects, premature birth, and infant mortality. Key Club members raise thousands of dollars annually through various programs, including collecting change and taking part in March of Dimes’ signature event, March for Babies. Since 1994, Key Club has been Trick-or-Treating for UNICEF and over the years has raised nearly US$5 million for iodine deficiency programs worldwide and HIV and AIDS programs in Kenya and Swaziland. Now it’s helping The Eliminate Project.

So far this school year, KENTLAKE KEY CLUB has been off to a great start! Our club’s attendance has grown from 5-10 people showing up to meetings regularly last year, to an average of 58. For service projects, our club has volunteered for National Public Lands Day at Lake Fenwick. There, we pulled out weeds and helped to keep the plant life from taking over the trail. Our next service event will be held on the 11th for ReLeaf at Clark Lake Park. We are also getting our club ready for trick-or-treat for UNICEF, donation boxes are being placed in every classroom. Submitted by Alexa Agustiano, Bulletin Editor of Kentlake Key Club

KENTWOOD KEY CLUB has had an amazing start off to the year! New members have amazed the officers with how quick, ready, and excited they are to volunteer more than we have ever seen before. One of the projects we recently had was the Covington Curriculum Elementary Night. We had a 5th/6th grade partner and we both we assigned areas to help lost parents around the school. We also helped hold doors, direct traffic, set up rooms, and clean up the rooms. Through this experience, we got to connect with the students and staff of Covington Elementary, which lead to strong bond between our schools. We finally ended with the Key Club chant and our passion for service really shined through! Submitted by Nancy Tran, President of Kentwood Key Club

RENTON KEY CLUB’s activities so far consist of meetings. At meetings, we focus on introducing the basics & forming a routine for both members & also officers. We are forming a close community for our club as we continue having a friendly, casual atmosphere during each meeting, this promoting people to continue coming & enjoying it. Now that we've passed the introduction stage, we are gradually presenting more volunteer opportunities. Since it is October, we will include events relating to fall, Halloween & breast cancer awareness. We also are planning to include more fundraisers for our club, though we still are brainstorming ideas. One goal of fundraising is to have more members go to DCON by reducing the cost. We would like for members to experience the fun & become more involved. Submitted by Kim Tran, Bulletin Editor of Renton Key Club
