Question
What if it is raining on the day I signed up to volunteer?
What should I wear to volunteer?
What should I bring?
If I have questions, who do I ask?
Answer
We are an outdoor event and prepare as such. All decisions regarding the race and the weather are “ game time” decisions. If it is raining where you live, it doesn’t mean it is raining at the race site… Come ready to work, rain or shine!
Volunteers should dress comfortably and for the weather (hot, cold, rain, shine). I recommend close-toed comfortable shoes (think running shoes), hat, sunglasses, sunscreen.
I will have a variety of snacks in the Information Tent/Volunteer Tent. Around lunch I will have pizza from Papa John’s delivered- I only order cheese pizza and pepperoni pizza. I will either have it brought to your volunteer area or someone will pick it up from me. If someone in your group has special dietary restrictions please ask them to provide their own snacks/food. (This is with the exception of the Bike Aid Stations where we have made special arrangements)
The volunteers that you have recruited should come to you with their questions. If you do not know the answer, you can call or text me.
Your volunteers should check in with YOU. If all of your volunteers do not show up and you believe that you will need additional help contact me ASAP via phone call. If I don’t answer, then send a text that starts with “SOS“ WHEN
Do I need to check in?

Important FAQ’s
RESPONSIBILITIES CAPTAIN 1
RECRUIT, Recruit, recruit
Recruit, recruit enough volunteers to FILL the position you have signed up for. These volunteers can be Members of your group/club/organization Family members Friends
Children are always welcome. I believe that children should be exposed to volunteering within their community at an early age. *However* , I ask you to use discretion. There are 8 year olds who act 30 and there are 30 year olds who act 8…. So for me to say they need to be ‘X’ years old does a disservice to those children who are well behaved and know how to follow directions. KEEP IN MIND: if you are volunteering ON RACE DAY it can be dangerous for both the child and the athletes. Cyclists are riding 25-30 mph, an errant step into their path can lead to serious injury. Runners are focused on one thing: the finish line. I have seen collisions (all with adults!) that ended badly. And no volunteer wants to be the reason that an athlete doesn’t get to finish!

MAKE SURE YOUR RECRUITS ARE SIGNING UP ON VOLUNTEER LOCAL!!
As of today… only 110 people have signed up on Volunteer Local…. I have 893 separate volunteer positions listed………

3 Sign yourself up under the JOB titled ‘CAPTAIN’ on volunteer local

Ironman is not unaware of the EXTRA work that it takes to be a Captain and they want to make sure you get extra swag for the extra time you give our event! All shirts, jackets, etc are unisex tech material so consider that when you are sending me the size you want.

You will also receive a separate email that is only about the papperwork that will be accepted.
Lastly….
.Keep an eye out this week for an email that is specific to your VOLUNTEER JOB.
It will include a description of the VOLUNTEER JOB that your group/organization/club is responsible for, a map with the location of that job, where you can park and where my Information Booth/Volunteer Tent is located so you can find me if you need me - or just stop by to say hello!
The volunteer tent will have snacks and drinks and a table where all volunteers are welcome to come and take a quick break.
