STUDIO PROJECT: PROJECT: MUSEUM OF MODERN ARCHITECTURE STATUS: STUDIO PROJECT SITE: FORT STREET PUBLIC SCHOOL, SYDNEY BRIEF: A museum for modern architecture. It must include a permanent exhibition space, a temporary exhibition space, an auditorium, library and cafe.
CONCEPT DIAGRAMS:
RESPONSE:
IN THE SITE
ON AND THROUGH THE SITE
The concept for the museum is derived from the site, a unique cylindrical sandstone island in an area where there is frequent community activities taking place. The proposition is to manipulate the landscape so that the building sits ON, OVER, IN, OUT and THROUGH the site to create a more dynamic experience for the museum visitors.
The permanent gallery takes advantage of the sandstone site. Carving out the sandstone, what remains are rooms which puncture out through the walls
The roof becomes part of the ground. The effect, those programs which punctures the roof will look like it is sitting on the site.
ON THE SITE Given that the site is round, the building form is a ring which sits on top of the site. The programs can then be freely placedSECTION within the ring and protrude TWO through the roof as a secondary structural system.
OVER THE SITE + STRUCTURE The structure consists of box-in-box system where the buildings extend to the ground and follow a radial grid. SECTION The primaryTHREE structural system is post and beam construction. This also allows the eastern end of the ring to hover over the site and not touch it.

The lowest level is the carpark, hidden and opaque. The middle level is semi-transparent. The musicians being able to see the visitors, but the visitors are unable to see the musicians. The programs above are transparent to the public from in terms of access within and visibility from the street
There are three levels of transparency. The room at the core is most grand, the final destination and hence is not transparent. The middle layer is semi transparent where there may be some interactions between the public and private. The outer layer is transparent, revealed.
The circulation of the existing program appears as individual rooms. The large glazing with the city as backdrop makes the experience within the programs as floating boxes where each one possesses it’s own character and identity. The general progression is towards an upwards motion.
The circulation of the Casa Da Musica is not defined as a single path. The proposal is to have a dual set of circulation path, one for the paying customers and the other for non-paying customers. The areas of intersections also provide opportunities for the semi-transparent zoning.

STUDIO PROJECT: PROJECT: PARRAMATTA THEATRE COMPLEX STATUS: STUDIO PROJECT SITE: PARRAMATTA, SYDNEY BRIEF: Three theatres of different sizes, support programs, office spaces and a cafe. The intention is to make a connection n to Parramatta River as well as Prince Alfred Park.
A. Multi- directional access from the site into the building to draw in visitors from all directions. B. The hierarchy of volumes is determined by the theatres. The more used and important programs are located close to the water. This makes the visitors walk through the site the their desired spaces, simultaneously experiencing the building. C. The use of a combination of ramps to address all edges. Allowing the site to flood during raining seasons to alleviate the of flash flooding by 80% and provide visitors changing experiences.
1. The site is subjected to flooding due to an increase in hard surfaces and a loss in green areas. Hence an open park amphitheatre is proposed to counteract any potential natural disasters. 2. The Road Hierarchy suggests that the older part of Parramattta is more dynamic whereas the newer north part follows a rigid grid structure. Hence the circulation proposed through the site should reflect both of these circumstances. 3. The older green spaces are defined whereas the residential green areas are undefined like perennial spaces.

PRECEDENT CASE STUDY: RENDERINGS PROJECT: MILL OWNERS ASSOCIATION ARCHITECT: LE CORBUSIER STATUS: COMPLETE 1954 SITE: AHMEDABAD, INDIA BRIEF: To understand the building in order to build a 1:50 scaled model to be used as part of a Le Corbusier exhibition held at the maritime museum Sydney, 2013. 2 20 013. 13.
Mill Owners Association_Site Plan
MAIN THEMES The Mill Owners’ Association building captures much of Le Corbusier’s discoveries in India. The brises-soleils once again appears and are angled with the intention to capture prevailing breezes. Furthermore, it enables Le Corbusier to blur the boundary between internal and external environment. The experience of this building begins with a long ramp to produce a grand entrance into the cubic box.
Mill Owners Association_Section
Once inside, Le Corbusier has exposed the structure. His use of columns as the main structural system further allows him to achieve free planning and hence the interior spaces is a play on oppositions. There is an architectural dialect of curvilinear forms versus orthogonal forms as wells as single story volumes versus double story volumes. The result is a diverse sequence of sensory experience.
