CANBERRA, Jan 28 AAP Prime Minister Julia Gillard has gone on the defensive as criticism mounts of her government's controversial new flood levy. Ms Gillard lost her cool in one combative radio interview on Friday, angrily rejecting suggestions the $5.6 billion flood recovery money might be misspent. "You don't need to patronise me, thank you very much," she told 3AW's Neil Mitchell, after he told her Australians would not accept any waste and mismanagement. It sparked a war of words between the prime minister and the Melbourne morning show host in what was a fiery 20-minute interview. Finance Minister Penny Wong on Friday
CANBERRA, Jan 27 AAP West er n Au st r al ia is set to cont i nue as Aust ralia's boom st ate but will be constrained by a shortage of skilled workers, Access Economics says. I n it s l at e s t Bu si ne s s O ut lo ok , t he forecasting agency says states other than WA will continue to struggle as they emerge from the economic crisis. Access said $250 billion in re source and other projects in WA were creating an unprecedented demand for skilled workers. But while i n the past WA has t a ken advantage of high migration rates, the number of overseas workers was dropping sharply. Population growth has also dropped back at three times the pace seen nationally. "WA already has too little spare capacity, so it will soon see a swag of wage and price increases as skill shortages and delivery dates proliferate," the report said. NSW's recovery is tipped to continue at a
defended the prime minister's handling of the interview and denied Ms Gillard's temper was fraying. Ms Gillard was also f i re d up over a suggestion that not every member of her cabinet agreed with the levy. "Don't be so silly," she responded, while labelling a claim that the levy was politically motivated as "complete nonsense". The feisty performance is a sign the federal government is facing an uph i l l bat tle selling its flood recovery package, which was announced on Thursday. Two of the four key independent MPs, who the government will have to woo if it is to get the levy through parliament, remained cagey about their support during interviews
modest pace, but faces the dual challenges of higher interest rates affecting consumption and the strength of the dollar affecting manufacturers and tourism. While business investment is expected to rise over the next two years, it will lag behind WA and Queensland. Unemployment in NSW is tipped to drop to an average 4.1 per cent in 2011/12, while jobs growth flatlines at 1.6 per cent between 2011/12 and 2013/14. Victoria has been hit by a downturn in foreign students, as well as high interest rates and a strong dollar. But its housing market is solid. Around a third of all homes being built in Australia are in Victoria. Victoria's jobless rate is forecast to drop to 4.3 per cent in 2011/12, from 5.1 in 2010/11. Queensland's tourism sector has taken a heavy hit from the high dollar, with the effect lingering "for some time", Access reported.

on Friday night. Queensland independent Bob Katter said he would support the levy in its current form, but only if the government created a long-term disaster relief fund. NSW mid-north coast independent Rob Oakeshott said he would not make a decision to support or block the levy until nearer the parliamentary debate, due in a fortnight's time. He also wants a permanent disaster fund. "I'm not going to fall into the trap of making a decision a fortnight before we have the debate," he told the ABC, adding that he wanted to see more detail on the proposals before making a decision. Environmentalists have been put offside by cuts to climate-friendly programs which have been proposed alongside the levy. A perceived lack of spending oversight has prompted other concerns.
While flood victims and the low paid will be exempt, a one-off levy of 0.5 per cent will apply to taxable income in 2011/12 between $50,001 and $100,000, while a one per cent levy will apply to taxable income above $100,000. Early polls show most Australians are against the levy, with more than 50,000 people responding to Fairfax's online survey and 74 per cent giving it the thumbs-down. Ms Gillard insists the government has value-for-money at the top of its priorities, although she has repeatedly refused to take responsibility for any misspent money. Queensland Premier A n na Bligh has also pledged to t ake the rap for any mismanaged spending. In Queensland, Flood Recovery Taskforce boss Mick Slater will oversee the spending, while arrangements are still being made in Victoria and Tasmania.
But developments in the coal and gas sectors, despite the floods, are set to boost jobs - pushing the unemployment rate to an average 4.1 per cent in 2011/12, down a percentage point from the current financial year. South Australia's wine and car makers face a bleak outlook, with unemployment rates set to hover above national rates. But a number of big resources projects, including the Olympic Dam mine expansion and gas-fired power station at Tepko, are bright spots for jobs. Access said Tasmania's short-term growth outlook appeared "relatively modest", with
unemployment remaining above the national average. The NT's economy is growing more slowly than Australia as a whole, as government and private sector investment eases back, but LNG and oil projects are expected to lift economic growth beyond 2012. Public sector spending and a housing construction surge has kept the ACT's economy t i c k i n g o v e r, w it h Access forecasting the territory to "keep much of its share of Australia's economy and population" despite the government's talk of trimming the budget to cover the cost of the flood relief effort.

SYDNEY, Jan 27 AAP Singer Jon Stevens says he's outraged about being ejected from a Jetstar flight to Brisbane, where he was to play at a Queensland f lood rel ief concer t, and denies any bad behaviour. Stevens was removed from flight JQ981 on Wednesday following an altercation with Jetstar staff about seating. But Stevens maintains he did nothing wrong and says the low-cost carrier was out of line. "In all my years of extensive travelling around the world and within Australia, I have never been treated like this," he said in a statement on Thursday. "I did not raise my voice at any stage, did not use offensive language and I would certainly suggest that I was not behaving in a dangerous or offensive manner." The performer, who is touring Australia's east coast with Jimmy Barnes, had travelled to Perth Airport after a concert and boarded the overnight flight to Brisbane. He says the aircraft was preparing for takeoff when he moved into an empty row of seats. "The steward requested that he move back to his allocated seat, a directive that Stevens initially queried, but complied when told that it was airline policy," said the statement, issued by Stevens' management. "The steward then stood there glaring at me, so I asked him why he was glaring at me," Stevens said. "The steward replied with `Are we going to have a problem? and I said `We already have a problem'." The aircraft then returned to the terminal, and Stevens was told to disembark. "I couldn't believe it was happening," he said, adding that he told the steward he needed to get to Brisbane to perform at a fundraiser concert for the Queensland flood relief. Two federal police officers entered the cabin and insisted that he disembark, he
said. Jetstar conf ir med police were called to remove Stevens but says staff were simply following the airline's strict safety guidelines. "A decision was taken that he was unable to fly," a Jetstar spokeswoman told AAP. "We have strict safety guidelines and this includes passengers following instructions of our crew. "Our cabin crew were not confident about his willingness to follow instructions and it was also due to the fact of his disruptive behaviour." She then added his behaviour was also aggressive. Stevens said he booked a Virgin Blue flight to Brisbane after Jetstar imposed a 24-hour ban on him. Stevens fronted Australian rock band INXS after the death of its lead singer Michael Hutchence and wrote the official song for the Sydney 2000 Olympics Torch Relay. He was the lead singer of Sydney band Noiseworks which had major hits in the 1980s with Take Me Back and Touch.
CANBERRA, Jan 25 AAP Ba n ke r a n d p h i l a n t h r o p i s t Si mo n McKeon has been named 2011 Australian of the Year. The 55-year-old beat a strong f ield, i nclud i ng t he b o ok i e s favou r i t e, i n d i g e n o u s r i g h t s l aw ye r L a r i s s a Behrendt, to earn the prestigious title, which was announced at a ceremony in Canberra on Tuesday. Mr McKeon, from Brighton, Victoria, decided in his early years that a successful corporate career didn't have to come at the expense of community work. So i n the m idst of his lucrat ive investment banking career, he moved
into a part-time position with Macquarie Group, allowing him to spend more time elsewhere. He joined the board of World Vision Australia, and continues his association with its international partner to this day. Currently, he is the chairman of the CSIRO and the Business for Millennium Development, which fosters links between businesses and the developing world. He also is involved with the Global Poverty Project and indigenous charities. SYDNEY, Jan 24 AAP The "average" Aussie is changing, and by 2020 we'll barely recognise ourselves. The iconic pastime of watching sport is under threat from the internet, the era of the quarter-acre block is dead, and more of us are trading our leisure time for hours in the office, a new report says. The f indings, released on Monday by business information analysts IbisWorld, looked at population trends, migration, working hours, employment and leisure activities - taking a stab at where we could be in around a decade. Proper ty pr ice h i ke s couple d w ith increasing population density in the major cities have brought the end of the suburban home a mong t he g u m t rees, w it h it s clothesline out the back and veranda out the front. Fewer Aussies own their homes outright, and more people are ditching backyards for balconies, with apartment sales on the rise. More people will elect to rent as they are priced out of the property market. Forecasts for low unemployment and a longer working hours are expected to cut into Australians' free time by 2020. Aussies still love their sport, with the number attending events jumping to 7.6 million in 2009-2010. AFL matches still draw the biggest crowds of any sport, but netball and soccer - not cricket or rugby - are the most popular sports we play. But people no longer spend so much free time outdoors, with the video game industry expected to double its annual revenue of $3.6 billion over the next decade. Traditionally the realm of male teenagers, video games have undergone a dramatic shift, with the average age of the Australian gamer now estimated at 30, while 45 per cent of all game consumers are female. Just about every Aussie is jumping online as computer literacy and internet speeds increase, with predictions online shopping could account for up to 10 per cent of Australia's overall retail spending by 2020. Australia is also getting bigger by the day. The current population of 22.5 million is expected to reach 25.9 million by 2020, with 300,000 babies born in 2009-2010 alone.
"Rising incomes and household wealth, coupled with low unemployment, good job security and government policy such as the baby bonus and childcare rebates have greatly contributed to the boom in births in the last five years," said IbisWorld general manager Robert Bryant. Still, immigration is the key factor driving population growth and by 2020 it will add about two million people to Australia's population. "(With) the strength of the Australian economy compared to other developed nations and universit y f unding under pressure, we expect the government to come under increasing pressure to loosen immigration rules," Mr Bryant said. People born in the UK and New Zealand are the next biggest contributors to Australia's population, although more than 75 per cent of Australians are born here, the study said.
to many organisations," the National Australia Day Council said in a statement. But the father of four has also found time for play. He and crewman Tim Daddo made
history in 1993 when they set a 500-metre world speed sailing record of 46.52 knots that was to last 11 years. I t w a s f i n a l l y b r o k e n b y Fr e n c h windsurfer Finian Maynard in 2004.
