Architecture We read the skyscraper as a typology rooted in urban density. It is the city developed towards the sky. Most modern skyscrapers are poor in their expression. Iconography and corporate cheapness rule. Towers are placed on top of the urban tissue. Security concerns and a focus on verticality result in spatial isolation. We develop the city again towards the sky. An ensemble of boxes is developed around 16 vertical cores. The boxes are generic in set-up and provide an open floorplan. Supported by four public skylobbies the space in between the boxes acquires an urban atmosphere. A spectacle free from spatial limitations. The development is rooted in the city. The tower is closely linked to the main transport interchange. The building brief is adepted to the current situation. Based upon an analysis of the local office market the building will be phased. Only 64% of the original building brief is scheduled for the first phase. In time the building will grow further, implementing market changes and technical innovations. Soon after the construction start a new urban life will start to grow. With the completion of the first phase the tower will be in full bloom. In time the building stays flourishing, when new boxes are built or old ones renewed.

artist impression Vertical City

We wanted to develop an urban building instead of another iconic tower.

The programmatic brief is inside the boxes. The urban life is in between the boxes. The apartments are based upon three ingredients: 1. always over two floors 2. private patio 3. livingroom = void + view artist impression Life in between boxes Studies _ Team 1 _ City in a Highrise
