YEAR 2 STUDIO

With COVID came many restrictions and limitations, the strict safety precautions enforced on everyone made it hard for people to carry out their daily routines, be it going to school, going to work, and even going to meet friends and loved ones.

ZOOM has allowed for people to reunite virtually, with no restrictions on place and time. It’s convenience has benefitted people greatly, especially students. However, even with its endless benefits, there are some setbacks, main issue being that online learning is not as engaging and not as immersive for both students and teachers.

The aim of this space, ZCnT, is to help create a more engaging learning experience with the AR (augmented reality) technology that functions with zoom and has been incorporated into the space, and enhance the learning experience.

The words “CONQUER” and “MAXIMIZE” was the starting point, the very beginning.

I chose to look at how ‘hope’ and ‘fear’could be utilized in this scenario, eventually settling on using beads to represent the respective words, and eventually creating 2 short videos that would kick start the ideation.

Yellow beads represented ‘hope’ while black beads represented ‘fear’, I decided to see how the two words could compliment each other negatively, so when the black beads were introduced into the ‘hope’ space, it was to represent how fear can cloud one’s mind easily.

When someone allows their mind to be easily clouded by fear , it spreads fast, and this is represented by the black beads eventually covering up and conquering the ‘hope’ space, maximizing its territory and claim over the space.

A series of drawn diagrams to show a space being ‘conquered’

The next step was to figure out how the spaces in the chosen frames could connect and form new spaces, using light, shapes and shadows to visualize the forms .

space formation, space exploration

My finalized collage. i had taken into account how the shadows had their own form and how the light sculpted new spaces, with those in mind, i pieced together a collection of new spaces birthed from the existing space.

STUDIO — SD3 — ZOOMCONNECT

With the collage, I then traced out what I could visualize on paper and with the final results, I used it to craft a model.

embraced and welcomed the light flow.

Different materials of various size and shapes were tested out to see how they would play into the spatial quality of the model.

From the model, I extracted close up shots from within the model, choosing the three that intrigued me the most, then sketching out the primary form and then giving it a 3D form.

From the three forms that were produced, the first prototype for ‘ Module A’ was formed.

The form was not successful but it served as an inspiration for the next two modules.

FORM EXPLORATION

My chosen site was Canberra Plaza, the existing train station had a open air nautical design, which inspired me to bring in elements and themes of nature into the mall.

My inspiration for the main form of the structure was trees and how the branches and leaves were spread out but still remained connected.

I felt that the trees, their roots, their leaves and their branches were all linked back to zoom’s primary function, which was to allow people to connect with ease.

YEAR 2 STUDIO

When people have spent majority of their life abiding by the regulations imposed on them, they become so stiff and rigid, void of any form of personality or character.

While diving further into this city of regulations, the need to escape this mindset that was confining the people became increasingly urgent.

A personal belief is that the space reflects the people in it, and the slice I was wandering on was the embodiment of the people within it, rigidity.

The purpose of the design is to help people separate from the idea that they need to be so conscious about how they present as an individual and help them express themselves more freely.

SLICE START CLEMENCEAU AVENUE

I started walking at clemenceau avenue, picking up on any notable or obvious qualities of the space for the first walk, then making plans to slowly pick out more distinct and individual traits of each little space within the slice.

SLICE END — ASIAN CULTURAL MUSEUM

After the first few walks , I managed to isolate 10 keywords that stood out to me the most, the 10 being: Vibrant , Wood , Nature , Adults , Effort , Artificial , Station , Water , Accessible , Repetition.

DEVICE IDEATION & CREATION —

CAPTURING TEXTURE

This was my final design for the device.

Modelled after a glove, i cut it to fit my hand exactly.

My concept for this device was “ eyes for the skin “. The skin is the most exposed part of our bodies, excluding the eyes and others of the sort. The human skin can “feel” things and not “see” and “hear” them, so i decided to make eyes for the skin.

I decided to use clay so that i could imprint these textures easily by just simply pressing down on the textured surface with my palm. Instead of covering the full hand, i left out the fingertips and substituted them with sponges. I had a hard time thinking of what i could use to substitute skin, but i ended up using sponge because the first layer of the skin, the epidermis, is like a sponge.

There are two layers on the palm part, this allows me to slide the clay pieces in easily and remove them just as easily.

The bubble concept, inspired by the bubble palace , but it would be too clustered in the space if i added it in.

Concept sketches for the individual zones, I tried my best to portray and express each emotion.

I wanted a programme where people could learn to reconnect with themselves and once again find happiness in the mundane life.

My initieal idea was the bubble palace inspired pods, then i thought about the possibilities of a plastic fish bag as a space as the concept of the plastic fish bag really resonated with my space

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI
24

For the zone “temporary” I wanted to have it be expressed in a more literal sense because the message itself was extremely straightforward, and i wanted the people who experienced this space to really feel it.

The initial idea was to have solid glass pieces but I struggled with actually incorporating that into the space because the space was incredibly narrow, and the glass pieces would not only be dangerous, the would be hard to maneuver around as well

I decided to go with a circular central stage so that it would be more inviting and welcoming that a square shaped one or any shapes with sharp edges.

My initial idea for the ‘endure’ stage was to have tensile materials for the people to tear through each stage so to show resistance and endurance that people wouldn’t be able to get through each time.

But I realized this was not efficient in terms of experience as the tensile material would have to be replaces everytime it got torn, and so I changed it to a netting type of tunnel which was intended to bring replicate the feelings of uncertainty and fear before starting something new, and they would have to endure he long walk before being able to reach the next stage

My chosen space is a connecting space underground, this space is a place where mostly business people, office workers, white collared people pass. I chose this space so that this experience could somehow help and inspire them.

The final zonings I decided on, there were 6 in total to represent the various emotions I wanted my users to experience.

COMPLICATED

To portray the complexities and complications of the human mind and heart.

To get through, users are supposed to move through the various spaces, there is no correct path, it should encourage them to take the first step and make the change, instead of always waiting for others to make the first move.

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI 28

Anything can be complicated, from lifestyles, to feelings, to relationships. When affected by these complications, everything becomes overwhelming. Your thoughts, your choices, your decisions are all affected.

When in a complicated situation, one cannot think straight, which might lead them to make bad choices in the spur of the moment.

This space replicates the complexity of ones mind when in a undesirable situation.

ENDURE

A space where users have to walk down the unstable netting to the central zone. The space is intended to show the effects of ‘stress’. The more stressed the user is, the more they are aware of the stress and strain they are applying onto the netting beneath, it is up to them to endure and make It through.

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI 30

People endure a lot. Are they holding in their desires for they think there’s no time to continue chasing it ? Do they not want to indulge in their interests in fear of sticking out ? These selfless acts will only bring regret in the future.

This space portrays people suppressing their own desires, holding themselves back, the tension of walking on the net and the tension they are applying on the rope shows how their choices, their selfless acts, not only affect them, but their lives as well.

— SD4 — GRAFFITI 31
STUDIO

TEMPORARY

An experience. Users will be greeted by various silhouettes of people on fabric, creating an illusion that there are many people surrounding them ,when in fact, the presence of the people disappear upon finding out that they are fake. The experience is temporary, the presence is fleeting

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI 32

Everything in life is temporary. The inherent fear of loss consumes people, it brings out a habitual tendency to turn away from opportunities.

Instead of using the fact that everything is ‘temporary’ , negatively, one should use it to their benefit. Since it won’t be there for long, why not just grab it while it’s still within reach ? After all, there is nothing to be gained while waiting all day, contemplating if the choice is right.

This space replicates the fleeting nature of life. People often feel pressured when there are many people around, and refuse or are unable to perform well with the fear that they will be judged. People often suppress their desires because they don’t think it is worth chasing.

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI

CENTRAL ZONE

The central zone where people can gather around. On the tables that are placed up front, there will be different materials placed upon them, users can take a canvas and express their feelings, express themselves, when they finish experiencing the space. This is to encourage them to express themselves without the fear of judgement from other people.

The clocks all around are moving slow or in the wrong direction. This is to signify that they are above time, that there will be time for them to find themselves and that it is time for them to truly reconnect with themselves.

STUDIO — SD4 — GRAFFITI 34

After experiencing everything, people can gather at the central zone and discuss their feelings, thoughts, and interests. These might form unexpected friendshps and new opportunities.

They can express their feelings on the canvas and hang it up on the wall or bring it back, this could be seen as leaving their own unique mark in the space. SInce everyone is given the same materials, it would be interesting to see other peoples interpretation and expression of their feelings.

Here, they should be able to express themselves freely without having to worry about others.

We were first given an empty plan, which me and my group then proceeded to discuss and start drafting out rough space plannings for where we wanted things to be, this was our final draft for the space planning.

We then started to choose out color palettes from the moodboards that we had put together. We wanted more neutral, earthy tones to truly emphasize the relaxation aspect of our space.

The outdoor bench and garden area had hints of blue to spruce up the area instead of a overly green space.

The Office and pantry spaces we decided to incorporate more greens into the palette .

We went fot a more wooden theme in the Reception and Lounge area, wanting to create a inviting feel to the entrance.

And so our final palette was created after careful consideration and countless trial and errors.
