Slice of City

An exhibition projects which aims to make people see Singapore streets from a totally different angle. It consider development from walking and visiting the space, using handmade devices and building up 3d models and renderings

The gap allows the user to look at outside world. At the same time the range is limited by the gap size The device collect sound through the Polygon receiver, the sound pass through the tubes and the user can hear it when covering the ear with the rectangular cuboid.

Fort canning Park is very peaceful and quiet, but nature sound of birds, insects such as cricket, and rustling of leaves created by wind and when stepping on them can be heard when putting my device closer to the trees and bushes.Comparing to the park, the transition of sound change from a quite place to a noisy place can be feel. Vrooming of car, buses and motorcycle fills people’s ears. There are also people’s communication and interaction between each others.

The Parliament building is an important place under the control of the government. It is heavily guard and people are not allowed to enter, so it is sparsely populated and extremely quiet. Only the sound of the water fountain beside the gate and workers who are pruning trees can be heard.Since Anderson Bridge connects the Empress Lawn and Raffles Place area together, there are always many passerby and cars. Laughters of people, zooming of cars sound of water splashing onto the riverbank and the fountain can be heard.

Contradistinction

When walking through my slice, I recognize that the places are connected together with transitions from fort canning park, a extremely quite but lively place(everyone who went there free themselves from busy city lives and have hope towards everything) to the noisy crossroads which everyone are just passerby of that didn’t experience the surrounding place and look quite like walking dead as everyone are indulged in their own businesses.Even some people walk together, they barely communicate with each others. Also,From quiet and heavily guarded Parliament house to Empress lawn filling with laughters. I started to wonder what was actually affecting people’s emotions.

When the visitors enter the negative emotion space, they would notice that there is no exit of this room. (Exit show in picture for better viewing experience) They have to slowly and patiently walk around the room and find the hidden exit. People who are unwilling to can only be trapped here or return to the entrance. The mosaic pattern on the wall would give a feeling of noisiness and annoying, making people want to exit as soon as possible. The mirror of different height can only show reflections of one person at a time when passing by, which alluded people’s lives of living in a busy city. They only got time to focus on themselves.

Travel Through Sound

The Zone consists of rods made by different materials being found along the slice. Speakers being imported inside the rod would play the sound from the area of where the material belongs to. The visitors would be asked to follow the path which was the most similar to what they usually heard in their normal life.If people choose the path with industrial and man-made materials, they would soon found that they are being lead back to the entrance. After a few round, they would realize that they are being trapped inside the city sound path and starting to go to the nature sound path which lead to the next zone. The contrast of sound would make the visitor feel the transition of level of comfort and they would learn that they should free themselves from their busy city lives.

StoryTelling

The storytelling zone was a series of glass walls which form many small spaces. There are stools provided for the visitors. Visitors are strongly encouraged to sit down and have a conversation with strangers and share experiences of the first two zone. The glass walls also allows them to observe the contrast of people’s reaction when walking in the two different path.

Material and Texture zone is a small maze made of different materials. Visitors would be able to have a immersive walk inside feeling the transition and contrast of different materials and level of limitation as the space volume was changing while walking along the path.

Observation

The observation zone located just right above the first three zone. Visitors in the observation zone would be able to observe the people downstairs and hence learn that people’s emotion can be easily affected by brightness, materials, sound and volume of a space. Therefore, they would know that they should squeeze some time from their buisnesses and studys to go to a space that they feel comfortable and relieve their stresses. Posters of tips to relieves stresses are being placed on the walls for people to read.

Microsoft Project

From two random words chosen, develop to a space that helps to promote and advertise for Microsoft Company.The space was used to held workshops and exhibit Microsoft’s products.

Tracing out

From the two words “study” and “Carry” that I had chosen, me and my group mate create a 2 mins video and then randomly choose 10 best freeze frames.After finding the relations between the 10 freeze frames,piecing them together due to the positive and negative space. Adjusting the trace-out picture in photoshop enable me to see the details and the lines more clearly.The red line being drawn form a invisible path and I need to imagine myself walking through the path and look at the direction the arrows pointing to. Followed by drawing out the first person point of view along the path.

Cross-section

Drawing the section was not an easy work. The first drawing was not well done as my mind was limited in drawing wall-like structures and the whole drawing looks more like a building. Hence I decided to redraw a new one, starting to jump out of the box and seperate the big planes to lines and small,random geometric shapes and came out with my final section drawing.

As most of the elements in the sections are not connecting to one another, now my number one question becomes how to combine these scattered parts into a whole. When I don’t have a clue, I just do it directly. I decided to cut out their approximate shapes with a board first, so that afterwards I only need to glue them together, which is more intuitive for me to see. Sure enough, my work became a lot easier after doing this. I quickly glued the cut out small boards and small strips together to form a large model that was almost the same as my painting. I was very satisfied with this model

Taking images of details of the model, transformed them into simple line structure drawings. Followed by turning the line drawings to combination of geometric shapes

Module A & B

From one of the geometric shapes drawing, Module A was created using blue foam. Then, I created moduleB based on moduleA. The two of them can be combined together and form many possible combinations due to the different angles and directions they had being inserted to each other.

5 Possibilities

-Microsoft is well-known and has a positive brand effect.

-Microsoft is well-funded.

-Microsoft can create a good working environment for staff and attract useful global technical talents.

-Many of Microsoft’s network and Internet-related products often have security vulnerabilities, which are less secure than competitors’ products, and these problems are widely discussed.

-Microsoft can quickly provide practical functions according to the trend, but it rarely leads the trend and does not have a good innovative concept.

-There are many substitutes for some products produced by Microsoft.

Site Analysis

Northpoint City is a shopping mall in Yishun, Singapore. The mall houses the North Park Residences condominium, Nee Soon Central Community Club, Yishun Public Library and Yishun Bus Interchange. It is currently the largest shopping mall in northern Singapore.[2] The centre has a combined net lettable area of 500,000 sq ft (46,000 m2) and has more than 400 tenants.

South Atrium

South Atrium of Northpoint City located at the south wing. Government and individual companies held events and exhibition here as it is an big,open space. As the square is surrounded by shops, there are no natural light. However, there are sufficient artificial light hence the whole atrium is very bright.

The space was divided clearly, two rows of shops at each side of the square. This allow the shoppers to quickly look around and spot where they want to go.

The space connect the shopping mall and the MRT and Bus station but the space is big enough for huge group of people hence the space would not be crowded. At the same time.as Northpoint City is right below a condominium and few public utilities

Microsoft is a well-known company around the world, and it is known for its unmatched software. So in order to help Microsoft promote, I decided to create a highly entertaining space, so that people passing by can be attracted and find this space interesting.

I designed this space into an M shape, which represents the initials of Microsoft, which can be seen when people overlook it from a high floor. This is also a point that other companies cannot replicate. Immediately afterwards, I put one of the rooms with a giant screen, and the giant screen will be connected to the xbox. People who enter the room will be able to try out the games on the xbox, and those with the top 20 scores at the end of the activity period will get 1year free trail of microsoft software.

The other half I designed into a workshop, this workshop will teach people to use some basic operations of Microsoft software, such as Photoshop, everyone who participates in this offline workshop will also get a 3month free trial of the software, plus a discount when purchasing Microsoft’s product for the first time.These two activities are aimed at people ranging from small children to middle-aged people. When they experience the fun of xbox or the convenience of using Microsoft software, I believe they will definitely go back and take advantage of the free trial opportunities they get, so as to help Microsoft achieves promotional effects.

The client’s request was to design a children’s bedroom shared by boys and girls. Considering the age of the children, the design adopts pastel color and fairy tale theme, and the cloud-shaped fall ceiling on the top creates a dreamy feeling of wandering in a fairyland
