Barbara Joyce Tabor Scott and Gertrude Tabor.

was born on April 18, 1947, in Memphis, TN, to the late Roosevelt

Barbara accepted Christ at an early age under the leadership of Rev. R.L. Taylor at Zion Hill Baptist Church. She later joined Olivet Baptist Church under the leadership of Rev. K.T. Whalum, Sr. In the year of 2000, she became a charter member of Olivet Fellowship Baptist Church to continue her worship of faith. To continue her exemplary Christian worship and faith journey, she devoted her time, talents, and energy serving as a faithful Sunday School teacher for many years. Barbara also served as a member of the following: Church Council; Palm; April Tribe, and the Seeds of Destiny. Barbara was a 1965 graduate of Hamilton High School. She furthered her education at Memphis State University, where she excelled academically and received a Bachelor of Science and a Master of Arts in Education. Her dedication to her students earned her the Rotary Teacher of Excellence honor. She was a member of the Memphis Education Association, where she served as Parliamentarian for four years, Sergeant-at-Arms for two years, and Co-Chair of WIN. Barbara had a very successful career in education, working 42 years in the Shelby County School District. She touched and molded the lives of a multitude of Wooddale students, many of whom remained in touch with her throughout her life. Embracing her love for history and the Civil Rights Movement she became an active life member of the Memphis Branch of the NAACP, the largest branch in the United States. She served eight years as Membership Chair, and under her leadership, Memphis won the Membership Drive each year. Barbara was initiated into Delta Sigma Theta Sorority, Incorporated, Epsilon Kappa Chapter, at Memphis State University in the Spring of 1968. She was an active and devoted Delta for 53 years. During that time, she assisted in Shelby County’s chartering, TN Alumnae, where she served as 1st Vice-President (2009-2011) and 2nd Vice-President (2011-2013). Her Memphis Alumnae tenure included Vice -President (1994-1996) and President (1996-1998). She also served as President in Epsilon Kappa (1990-1992). Barbara’s Delta experience continued to grow. She served as a Delta Internal Development Trainer, Membership Intake Trainer, and Risk Management Trainer. She served from 1992-1993 on the National Heritage and Archives Project Cherish Committee with past National President Jeane Noble. Barbara was also the Chair of the Regional Conference held in Memphis in 2011. She was preceded in death by her parents and her brother, George Mathews. Barbara Joyce Tabor Scott departed this earth on Saturday, April 10, 2021. Barbara’s life will be cherished by her two beloved sisters, Rosie T. Thigpen and Annette T. Garner; four nieces and one nephew who she loved dearly, Yevette Hughes, Rhontise (Charles) Muhammad, Melanie Mathews, Bobbie (Larry) BoClair, and George Mathews; a great-niece who stole her heart, Meagan Bowen, sister-in-law, Bobbie Mathews and her best friend, Pat Moore. Barbara also leaves to mourn her passing two special cousins, John and Iola Nichols, and a multitude of other relatives, church members, sorors, colleagues, former students, and friends.
