Life’s Reflections

Dorothy Jean Burns was born on February 27, 1941, to the union of Samuel Horace and Dorothy Elizabeth Burns. She was the first of eight children. She departed this life on March 21, 2024, at Cordova Wellness and Rehab in Memphis, Tennessee.

She received her formal education from Lester Elementary and High School, graduating in 1959. She then moved to Chicago, IL, and worked for over 30 years as a Key Punch Operator for Illinois Central Railroad. She was united in Holy Matrimony to Frank Smith in 1968, who preceded her in death in 1990.

She leaves to cherish her memory one son, Corey (Keisha) Smith of Dallas, TX; two granddaughters, Diamond Smith of Memphis, TN, and Cadence Smith of Dallas, TX; two sisters, Sharonetta Strickland of Grand Rapids, MI, and Carolyn (Evander) Dickinson of Memphis, TN; and a host of nieces, nephews, great-nieces and nephews, other relatives, and friends. She was preceded in death by her parents, Samuel H. and Dorothy E. Burns; three sisters, Geraldine Burns, Rita Burns, and Joyce Williams; and two brothers, Samuel Burns and Carl Burns.

“The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want. He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.”

If Roses Grow in Heaven

If Roses grow in Heaven

Lord, please pick a bunch for me. Place them in my Mother’s arms and tell her they’re from me.

Tell her that I love her and miss her, and when she turns to smile, place a kiss upon her cheek and hold her for a while.

Because remembering her is easy, I do it every day, but there’s an ache within my heart that will never go away
