Life’s Brief Reflections
ddie Savoy Bailey, Sr. of Memphis, TN, was born on January 9, 1933, to Albert Bailey, Sr., and Mary Lee Simpson. On Sunday, November 12, 2023, he peacefully departed this life at Encompass Health and Rehabilitation Hospital. Eddie Savoy Bailey, Sr. was a cherished member of our community, and he will be deeply missed. He led a life that touched many and left a profound impact. He was a United States Army veteran, proudly worked 50 years at Hunt Wesson/Conagra Foods, and was a faithful member at Norris Road Church of Christ. Eddie absolutely loved spending time with family and friends and loved them immensely. His most precious love was his wife, Barbara, whom he loved and adored for 72 years. Eddie never met a stranger and always embraced others with open arms. To know him was to love him. He was affectionately known to the family as “Paw Paw”. Fun and laughter were always central to his conversations as he embraced you with humor. He was a hard worker who led his life by example through love, support, and discipline. Eddie Savoy Bailey, Sr. is survived by his wife, Barbara Bailey; his daughter and son, Pamela Bailey-Morris and Eddie Savoy Bailey Jr. (Cynthia); his four grandchildren, Terrell Bailey-Pickett, Eddie Savoy Bailey III (Andrea), Tiff’ny Morris, and Erin Bailey, his great-granddaughter, Bailey Brown, his three brothers Albert, Ralph and Raymond, several nieces, nephews, cousins, and friends.

husband, dad and grandpa (Paw Paw) too, this is the legacy we have from you!
Though now gone from our sight, your loving spirit is imprinted on our hearts. You taught us how to live and love with kindness, courage, joy and laughter. We strive to honor you through how we live our own lives. Your persona was courageous, your presence could light up a room, you were our beacon of light and a pillar of love. For all of us, you gave your best, now the time has come for you to rest. So, go in peace, you’ve earned your sleep, your love in our hearts, we’ll eternally keep! Love, Barbara, Pam, Eddie Jr. & Grandchildren

Eddie Savoy Bailey, Sr., affectionately known to his grandchildren and family as Paw Paw, was everybody’s favorite person. As the saying goes, to know him was to love him. I remember when I was a boy living in Memphis I would spend the weekdays with my maternal grandparents, the Johnson’s, and the weekends with my paternal grandparents, the Bailey’s. I couldn’t wait to spend my weekends over at their house. It was like going away for the summer where you had freedoms that you didn’t have at home. As soon as you walked in the door, Paw Paw would be in his chair eager to greet you with a smile, a joke, laughter, and a warm hug that made you feel like family even if you had no familial connection. It wasn’t a customary, routine greeting either. It was one of those authentic greetings that can only come from a person who is deeply grateful for the life they’ve lived and the people in it. Paw Paw was like a giant that walked the earth. He was one of those ancestors that we romanticize from the distant past, spoken of with great reverence. Reflecting on his character, we deeply long for more elders like him today. He would give you the shirt off his back, pray for you and really mean it, give out free advice, tough love, and always the truth. What I’ll remember the most about Paw Paw is that he made everybody happy. I can only recollect so much from the past, but when I think about him, I think about me and my sister, and my cousins being happy, being with our grandparents, and being secure in the fact that we were unconditionally loved. He never made you think twice. I spoke to my sister shortly after my dad called to tell me the news of Paw Paw’s passing. I remember from our conversation her saying that, “he was my favorite person.” That inspired me to write this because I truly believe that if you really knew him, he more than likely was your favorite person. - Grandson, Eddie Savoy Bailey III

The love and support you always showed me will remain in my heart until we meet again. I’ll be thinking of you every time the power goes out! Champ I’m so grateful for the time I shared with Mr. Bailey, he was a kind and happy man. The memories that we created together will always warm my heart. RIP…………..Robert Montgomery I was always fascinated by big Ed, he and my folks were friends since high school and lived close by in Castalia before moving to Holiday Heights. I met Pam and “Butch” and started a 65-year close friendship with “Butch”. Big Ed worked hard but always spent time with his son and his friends. He would always participate in our back yard basketball games and show off his twohand push or hook shots. He was always fun and put up with our childhood adventures, I didn’t realize it then but he and my dad we role models for the boys in the neighborhood, good friendships last. Recently my mom asked about big Ed and wanted to call him. He will be missed and always be a precious part of our memories. Barry C. Somerville
