Elroy Matthews was born in Memphis on April 24, 1947, to the late Richard Arvin Matthews and the late Lucy Pearl Matthews; he was the middle child in a family of six siblings.
Elroy peacefully entered eternal rest on Sunday, January 26, 2025, at St. Peter’s Midtown Rehabilitation Center in Memphis, Tennessee. He was 77 years old and had been declining in health in recent years.
He attended Lincoln Elementary and Lincoln High School. In November 1966, he joined the United States Army; afterward, he served his last tour of duty in the Vietnam War. He was employed by Boise Cascade - RC Can Company.
Later, he was united in holy matrimony to his beloved late wife, Lois Wren. In that union, they welcomed their daughter, Tonee, and then their son, Terrance.
Elroy’s legacy extends far beyond his family and community. He was a devoted son, brother, father, and friend. His warm heart and humble nature touched the lives of many, leaving an indelible mark on all who knew him. He leaves behind to mourn his memory four children: his late son, Terrance; (Tamera) Stephen; and daughters, Tonee (Tony) Porter and Candace (Cleveland) Jones. He is survived by two brothers, Richard Matthews Jr. (the late Etherine) and Ronnie Matthews (Brenda) of Dallas, Texas. He had three sisters: the late Gloria Morgan-Dunlap (Arthur), Connie Stewart (the late Samuel), and Sheila (Robert), all of Memphis. He is also survived by a host of nieces, nephews, cousins, and grandchildren, Tevin, Tierra, Jaiden and Ke’Yon in various locations.
The Lord is my shepherd; I shall not want.
He maketh me to lie down in green pastures: he leadeth me beside the still waters. He restoreth my soul: he leadeth me in the paths of righteousness for his name’s sake. Yea, though I walk through the valley of the shadow of death, I will fear no evil: for thou art with me; thy rod and thy staff they comfort me. Thou preparest a table before me in the presence of mine enemies: thou anointest my head with oil; my cup runneth over. Surely goodness and mercy shall follow me all the days of my life: and I will dwell in the house of the Lord for ever.
